13. Splintered Friendships
“How are you getting on with our potions essay, Sev?”
“Already done, you?”
“I'm half way through, I just need to read up some more on some of the ingredients. I want to make sure I get the best grade I can again.”
“Gee, look at you two. A pair of bookworms.” Isabella joked as she squeezed herself in between the two older students as they walked down the corridor. “When did you get set this essay, anyway?”
“Oh, in yesterday's lesson.” Lily answered with a small embarrassed smile.
“Seriously?” Isabella sighed, “It takes me weeks to do my potions homework. Sometimes I really wish I was as smart as you two.”
“You are smart, Bell, you just need to believe in yourself a bit more.” Lily said with a soft laugh as she placed her arm around the younger girl's shoulders, “And you're a few years younger than us, remember. We've had more practice.”
“Hm that doesn't make me feel any better.”
“What are you worried about? I thought you hated potions class?” Severus asked quietly.
“Yeah I do...”
Lily chuckled, “You just want to get into the Slug Club, don't you?”
“Is that so bad?” She laughed at the looks on her friends faces, until she saw the look on Severus' face. He was suddenly looking nervous and a little bit annoyed, his eyes quickly averting to the ground.
Lily groaned and Isabella followed her gaze across the hall where James, Sirius and Peter had just walked around the corner and were now glaring at Severus.
The group of boys made their way over, stopping just in front of the three friends. Isabella stepped forward, hoping to direct them away before anything bad could be said.
“Hi, guys. We were just leaving, right, Lily?”
Lily nodded as she grabbed Severus by the arm and led him away, glaring at the boys as she did.
“Why are you hanging around with him?” James asked, almost the minute that Lily and Severus had walked away.
“He's my friend, what's so wrong with that?” She replied, crossing her arms over her chest.
Peter scoffed, “Hello, he's a Slytherin!”
“And he's Snivilus.” Sirius argued, “I don't see why you'd want to be friends with him. He probably doesn't even care about you, he's just using you.”
Her fists curled at her sides. “And how would you know? How would any of you know? All you do is look at people's appearances and you judge them before you even know them! Severus is a good person, he doesn't deserve to be treated that way!”
“No, James. I don't want to hear anymore about this. I don't want to argue with you guys but I'm not going to stop seeing my other friends either. This is the way it is, whether you like or not. So just get over it, already.”
Resisting the urge shove her way through them, she stepped around them and stormed away. It was up to them now.
