Chapter Five

Disclaimer: Don’t own any of the characters from BtVS, wish I did, would be doing something much more fun, other than playing around in Joss’s sandbox. Also don’t own GI Joe as Hasbro owns them.

Chapter Five

For the past twelve hours Mainframe had been trying to stop, track down and figure out who this hacker was. All he found was a small red tree as a signature. Searching various databases of known hackers he realized this was going to be a challenge. RedTree was a ghost, she simply didn’t exist and all previous attempts at capturing and tracing her had left most weeping.

“That’s before she tried to go against me that is,” he said to himself.

The technician nearby shook his head, he simply monitored radio traffic, computer geeks were a breed unto themselves.

“WHAT IN THE WORLD,” Mainframe cried out as he killed the trace that led him to a webpage dealing with midget porn. Closing windows as fast as they opened he growled and restarted his computer.

“Ok let’s try this from a different angle,” he said to himself. “What were you looking for?”

Looking through the history of recently searched documents, he frowned as nothing hyper-sensitive had been accessed, only personnel files.

“That’s interesting,” he said to himself as he typed away trying to track from the last place searched through rather the tripwire, which seemed to have been reverse booby trapped.

“What’s interesting Mainframe,” a voice asked from behind him.

Jumping up and quickly standing at attention, “Just what RedTree was looking for, Sir.”

“At ease,” General Hawk said with a smile. He knew the young man had been working all night on this so wasn’t going to be too pushy. “Tell me what you know.”

“That’s just it General, I don’t know that much, I only know what was looked at and who did the looking,” he replied.

“Was it Cobra,” the General asked, worried about his team.

“No Sir, absolutely not… RedTree is a legend in the computer community, one of the few hackers in the world who could pull this off. Most of the time the information that is taken leads to something wrong in that organization and usually causes quite a few headaches. But RedTree isn’t a terrorist, more of an aggravation for whomever attracts their attention,” Mainframe replied. “Do you remember that operation in Sunnydale called the Initiative?”

Hawk nodded, he had been at the Pentagon when that mess had taken place. No one knew something was happening, yet a mysterious source shined the light on the situation and it was shut down. He had always thought it was a soldier who blew the whistle on that situation; apparently it had been this RedTree.

“Are you saying there is something wrong with GI Joe,” Hawk asked very coldly.

“No sir, that’s the mystery, normally RedTree gets into something then sets off fireworks alerting everyone to its presence. What happened here was just barely classified, just personnel records and only those of one Joe,” Mainframe said with a frown.

Hawk frowned, wondering who it could be, “Who was it son?”

“Shipwreck,” Mainframe said without pause.

“Shipwreck? Are you sure?” the general asked wanting to be sure he heard him correctly.

“Yes sir, from what I’ve been able to piece together, it started as a simple DoD search into his name, which lead RedTree to our database. Honestly if they hadn’t tripped one of our hidden traps, I doubt we would have noticed. One other item Sir, this is the first time ever RedTree got caught doing something, I’d like to trace them,” Mainframe requested.

“Go ahead and try, after you get some food and some sleep. I’m going to contact the Flagg and let Shipwreck know someone has been digging into his past,” the General said as he walked out the door.

Nodding to the general and standing up, Mainframe looked at the time and realized he had better eat and catch a nap before trying to catch a virtual ghost.

“Shipwreck to CnC, Shipwreck to CnC,” came over the loud speaker.

“What did I do now,” Shipwreck said to himself as he got down from the Shark and started heading toward CnC.

“Shipwreck’s going to walk the plank,” Polly said as she flew beside him.

“Quiet bird brain,” he growled, “At least I hope not.”

As he entered CnC he saw General Hawk talking to the Admiral on one of the screens. “Shipwreck reporting as ordered Sir,” he said nervously.

“Stand down Shipwreck, you aren’t in trouble,” the general said easily. “I wanted to let you know we had a breach of the Joe database and someone was looking at your files.”

“My files Sir,” Shipwreck asked, “Do you know what they were after? Do I need to come back to base?”

“No we don’t at this time, and no, stay on the Flagg and complete your mission. I wanted you to be aware in case there is an issue later,” Hawk replied. “As it stands continue your mission and hopefully when it is complete we’ll have more information.”

Frowning at the non-answer Shipwreck nodded, “Aye aye sir.” Turning around and walking back toward the Shark and Lady Jaye, he had a mission to do and would focus on this later.

“What’s up Popeye,” Polly asked.

“I don’t know Polly, I don’t know,” Shipwreck said as he went to get changed for this rescue mission.
