Searching, Seek, and Destroy

AN: Finished my novel rewrites, so I sort of felt like finishing this part to take a little break from that but also since this part was almost finished before I started the June fic hiatus. Now I will go back to being off and dealing with my own characters. Happy reading.

*~* Searching, Seek, and Destroy *~*

"Wotcher, Uncle Lucius, how's it going?" Tonks said loudly. "Haven't seen you in an age. You do know you're not supposed to be here, right? It's not parents visiting day."

"You know, you needn't have shouted his name so loudly. I know all too well who he is. I've seen pictures." Wesley hissed in her ear.

"He's much prettier and foppish in person, don't you agree?"

Lucius Malfoy all but growled at them.

"Is it wise to provoke him?"

Tonks grinned. "No, not really, just fun. Certainly not wise, but wise isn't my forte."

"Well, I agree there, I suppose."

"You agree that wise isn't my forte?"

"No, you lunatic, I agree that it's just fun to provoke him." Wesley was holding her as tightly as he dared, but when he looked down, he was a bit startled to notice she was protecting him. It was strange. His little Raven, and he would likely always think of her in that manner, was shielding him from her big bad uncle.

"So... what are you doing here, Uncle Luce? And all alone?"

More bodies stepped out the shadows. Several more. Tonks and Wesley were now horribly outnumbered.

"Oh, so terribly sorry. You brought friends. Ok, so what are you doing here with... many... many friends? Is it a party? If someone had told me it was a party, I would have dressed for the occasion. I don't think Slytherin school robes are appropriate."

"How unfortunate that you'll be dying in them, mudblood."

Tonks didn't have a chance to retort to that insult embedded within the threat because in the next instant, Wesley was out from behind her and physically attacking Lucius Malfoy. Tonks had to grin at the sheer shock value of it all before she had to start doing some wand action of the muggle western 'cover me' sort. Her mother would be thrilled. Well, not about the two of them being ambushed, but that her 'man' looked reserved but was sort of a crazy lunatic when it came down to a fight. He was going to fit in with the family just fine. She couldn't be sure, but rumor had it this sort of behavior was what had attracted her mother to Ted Tonks in the first place. Tonks couldn't wait to bring Wesley home to meet her dad.

You know, if they survived all of this and actually got to have a relationship that proceeded to anything. She was rather determined to make it out of this as still part of the living though because just as Slytherin school robes didn't seem appropriate for a party, they really didn't seem appropriate for a death shroud either.

Tara awoke to see her father sitting beside her bed with one of her hands clasped in both of his. Anya was asleep in the chair next to him. She had been helping Lorne with the returned students until Remus had noticed her drooping and made her sit down. The former demon had instantly fallen asleep. She was now snoring.

"How're you feeling?"

Anya jerked harshly from sleep, snorting and sucking a bit of drool back into her mouth. "I'm awake."

"You ok, Anya?" Tara asked, snickering a bit.

"Yes. Fine. I wasn't sleeping."

Remus chuckled. He beginning to forget life before his friend here. Anya could be too funny. She lightened his life considerably, and she always gave excellent advice about his dealings with Tara. He'd be a much worse father without Anya. Remus was glad to know her. Sure, Sirius was still his best mate, but Anya was a more practical choice in a friend. Plus, currently, Anya was here unlike some other people who could turn into dogs.

"Now... how are you?" Remus said. "I ask again."

"I'm fine. I'm just... worried. Things are going to get worse before they get better. I can sense that much."

"But Doyle..."

"Thanks to Cassie, I'm Doyle-free. It's just me and the baby in here."

"And... Sirius?" He asked delicately.

"I... they don't know anything really. Not yet. Dumbledore said Kingsley is transporting him back here. Madam Pomfrey will keep him in the infirmary. She said she and Lorne will start looking into healing him, trying to wake him. I..." She seemed like she might cry then her face got all angry. "He just infuriates me so badly."

Remus smiled sadly at her. "He has that effect on a lot of people, darling."

"Yes." Anya agreed. "I'm not even having sex with him, and he infuriates me regularly."

Remus gave her such a look. He would have said something, but there was shouting from outside the infirmary. He rose and took out his wand. "Stay here."

"As if." Anya snapped, following him.

"What's going on?" Poppy Pomfrey asked.

"Don't know." Tara said. She retrieved her wand from the bedside table.

Poppy withdrew hers when there was another shout of alarm. She hurried out of the infirmary to she the hall outside full of what she only could assume were Death Eaters because she noted Lucius Malfoy among them, seemed to be leading them in fact, and Remus, Anya, Wesley, and Tonks holding them at bay. Barely.

Lorne stuck his head out and gave a surprised shriek.

"I suspect they've come for the students, Lorne. Bar the door. Get Tara to bind it. There's a floo in my office. Get Dumbledore. Alert as many of the professors as you can. Don't let them get the students. No matter how guilty of crimes they may be, they're still students. Also, if they're after them, these students must know something. Hurry."

"What are you gonna do, Poppykins?"

"Hex the hell out of them for daring to raid my infirmary, that's what. The nerve of some evil people! I swear!"

Lorne's eyes went wide before he did as she bid him, and pulled the doors closed.

"Yes, Dru?"

"There are men who aren't supposed to be here... here."

"I won't let them hurt Dawn or our little girl."

"What are you on about?"

Spike looked up when she didn't respond to see an open door and no Dru in the room. "Oh bloody hell."

He yanked his shirt on and hurried after her. He'd promised Dumbledore he wouldn't let Dru wander the halls alone while the students were here.

He cocked his head to the side to let Edward Malfoy know he could hear him. He usually refrained from answering outright when no other Malfoys were about as it made him look like a crazy person who talked to himself.

"I thought you should know that your father's showed up, and he's trying to kill Pansy."

"Draco, what is it?" Ginny asked.

Everyone had crowded into the common area of the dorms Draco, Dawn, and Lily had been put in to wait for Neville to return after his talk with Cassie. Now they were all staring at Draco because of his shouting.

"Death Eaters. In the school."

"How do you-" Harry started.

"Edward said."

Connor stood. "Well, Edward saying is good enough for me. Where?"

It was then that Lorne's head appeared in their fire.

"If anyone's out there, we are under attack! They're after the returned students in the infirmary, we think! Hurry!"

The group moved quickly. Had they really reached this point already? You know, that 'gone to pot', 'hell in a hand basket' point. It was not even a question of going. They all moved. And quickly.

They had barely discussed anything when Nearly Headless Nick came flying through a wall with several of the other school ghost behind him. Even the Bloody Baron. Neville jumped about a foot off of the ground.

"Nick?" Cassie asked.

"There's Death Eaters in the school, Miss Cassie."

Neville bristled. "Where?"

"Infirmary, Mister Longbottom."

Neville turned and ran in that direction.

"Neville, don't!" Cassie called after him.

She scowled. Neville might not consider himself brave, but he was a Gryffindor to the core. He just didn't know it yet. She could help him with that... and he didn't even have to know. She just wasn't quite ready for him to be charging off like Buffy would.

Wesley was crouched down behind the remains of a blasted column that had fallen on its side with Nymphadora Tonks crouched next to him and leaning against him. She was grinning like a maniac. He was uncertain if it was due to the fight or his nearness.

"Are you enjoying this?" He hissed.

"Certainly. You're here with me. There's a fire." She nodded to the burning torch near them that had been blasted off the wall. "If you'd like some music, I could hum a bit. It could be quite the romantic evening for us."

"You consider this a date?"

"Well, we could."

"Well, you know they say you should never do anything on the first date that's so exciting that it can not be topped on the second date."

"They who?"

"Well, you know... them."

Anya down on the ground next to them. "Are you two flirting? This isn't the time for that, you know."

There was a great deal of shouting in the hall.

Anya chanced a glance. Then ducked back down. "Ooooo, I think the reinforcements are here, finally, and Snape looks PISSED. I'll bet Willow gets lots of sex later tonight."

Wesley and Tonks both made faces or horror at her.

"Well, you know that heat of battle makes men-"

"Anya!" Wesley barked. "Do shut up."

"No, no, I think I want to hear about men and the heat of battle. Do go on." Tonks said with a sly grin.

"Well, this one time-" Anya started.

"At band camp..." Willow interrupted as she scared the lot of them by suddenly throwing herself behind the column with their merry little group.

"Sweet Merciful Zeus, Willow!" Anya shouted. "You nearly made me crap my pants! Don't do stuff like that during battle! I could have hexed you in the face or something!"

Willow snorted. "Well, I'm glad you're all right too, Ahn."

"Well, you scared me so bad that now I have to tinkle."

"I make you tinkle?" Willow said with a suggestive leer.

Anya glared at her. "Don't go trying to get all homo with me, girlie girl. We all know you get the hot beef injection, Potions master style, like a big hetero freak now."

Wesley made a squeaking sound that was punctuated by a look of sheer horror.

Tonks just chuckled. "I think I like you, Anya."

Wesley rolled his eyes. "Oh wonderful. Fabulous. She's exactly someone you need to be speaking to, the great pervert."

"Hey, I'm not the one who makes my girl-toy dress up like a schoolgirl. And Slytherin robes? You surprise me, Professor Wyndam-Pryce." She looked at Tonks. "Were you a bad girl in class today? Were there spankings?"

Wesley turned bright red. He knew Anya didn't know that Tonks was Raven Hope and that's why she was dressed thus. He also knew he couldn't tell Anya this. Not yet. It was frustrating and not to mention embarrassing. Especially since Willow was giggling quite a lot from behind both her hands which were clapped rather ineffectively over her laughing mouth.

Everyone was fairly disturbed by Drusilla cooing and petting Pansy Parkinson and calling the poor girl her baby. Pansy was still too deep in her portal hopping inter-dimensional craziness to notice much less be disturbed. Spike was trying to get Dru to leave off, but the vampiress was adamant that she could help Pansy. Dumbledore told Spike it was best to leave it for now. After all, Dru was not hurting Pansy, and they all had slightly more important concerns just now. For example... the fact that Lucius Malfoy had escaped. Again. Severus was just furious about that. Dumbledore and McGonagall were trying to figure out how in the heck that group of Death eaters had gotten inside the school in the first place. Obviously someone had allowed them entry. But who? Who would do such a thing? No one had any suggestions because any suggestions for suspects had been in the infirmary at the time.

Unless a way of entrance had been set up beforehand, but that seemed unlikely given the protection on Hogwarts. Yet... still... not fortress was wholly impenetrable. Perhaps someone had found a way around the wards.

"Why don't we make everybody sing for Lorne?" Fred suggested.

The whole infirmary looked at her. She'd not only spoken very loudly but had been the first person to present a clever solution to this dilemma.

"He'd sense who'd done it or who had evil motives or whatever."

Snape was smirking so wide that Willow elbowed him.

"You realize that if I did not like the torture you inflict upon me that I might have to pursue that woman for the simple fact that she is the most clever muggle I have ever encountered."

"Well, if I die, have at her."

Severus looked at her in shock. "Do not even joke about things like that! You are not going to die, and if you did... having at it with the Burkle woman would be the LAST thing in my mind!"

"I would be too distraught, woman! Bloody hell. You are so very vexing. I can not fathom why I have decided to marry you."

"Well, there's one highly probable possibility."

Lily looked at her 'parents' with a grin. She noticed Connor had a look of confusion and horror on his face. She leaned over to him. "You'll get used to them."

"My parents are/were vampires. I didn't think it got more weird than that. I stand corrected."

Draco flopped down next to them. Ginny sat next to him.

"Well, that was a bit anti-climatic, ay?" Draco sighed dramatically. "And my father escaped. Again. Woo hoo. Go him. Mister slippery snake. Bloody hell in a muggle-woven hand basket is what this is."

Lily looked at him with a scowl. "He'll be caught eventually, Draco."

"Or we could just go after him now and catch him." Connor said casually. "I haven't hunted in a long time."

The other three looked at him in shock and horror, but Draco's face quickly faded from that into sheer determination.

"No." Was all Ginny said.

Connor opened his mouth to argue.

Lily slapped a hand over it. "No. Gin's right. Crazy talk. Leaving the hunting to the hunters, that's what needs to be here."

"I am a hunter."

"Correction... leave the hunting to the hunters who are not also my boyfriend."

When the girls got distracted by Dawn and harry walking up, Connor and Draco exchanged a look that said they were not letting this craziness rest. Because in their minds, it wasn't exactly crazy. It was insuring both justice and safety for those they cared about. But then again, most crazy plans were about that.

Or world domination.
