Scene in a restaurant
Buffy slapped Finn’s hand away as he reached for one of her fries. Considering that she had three cheeseburgers and a family sized plate of fries he didn’t think she’d mind.
“So, you gonna make with the explaining?” Finn said as he rubbed the back of his hand, she hit hard for such a tiny girl. Buffy nodded as she took a large bite of her burger and washed it down with her diet coke. She’d steadfastly refused to do more then small talk u until she had food in front of her.
“Okay. Now I’m not the best at this and it helps to have a tweedy British accent so you’ll have to pretend. Trust me on this, it helps,” Buffy took another sip of her diet coke before continuing, “This world is older than any of you know. Contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise. For untold eons demons walked the Earth. They made it their home, their...their Hell. But in time, they lost their purchase on this reality. The way was made for mortal animals, for man. All that remains of the Old Ones are vestiges, certain magicks, certain creatures...”
“No. No… none of this is real, it can’t be real. It’s some sort of trick some delusion…” Elliot shook his head. He was devoutly religious and none of this fit with his world view. “God wouldn’t allow this…”
“Well, the jury’s still out on God but if it helps any, I’ve been to heaven and a cross will hurt and repel a vampire,” Buffy said with a hint of compassion in her voice. She knew how hard her world could be for some people and that some could never accept it. Elliot’s head snapped up at that as the implications of that statement hit him, he was about to speak but Buffy cut him off. “That’s a story for another time.”
“Okay,” Olivia began taking a deep breath. She was still somewhat pale and shaky but was slowly recovering her composure. “These… demons. They leave the earth. Where do vampires come in?”
“Good question,” Buffy said, “So again with the tweedy accent. The books tell the last demon to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood. He was a human form possessed, infected by the demon's soul. He bit another, and another, and so they walk the Earth, feeding... Killing some, mixing their blood with others to make more of their kind. Waiting for the animals to die out, and the old ones to return.” Buffy paused to let them think about what she had said and more importantly to finish her burgers and fries while they were still warm. She pushed the plate with a few remaining fries towards Finn.
“Okay. I’m not saying I believe any of this but if it’s true where do you fit in?” Elliot asked, “And why did none of this happen until you showed up?”
“I’m the Slayer,” Buffy smiled as she heard Munch’s excited whisper of “I knew it!”
“The Slayer? Like on that web site Slayer of the Vampyre?” Elliot asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Oh, Andrew is so dead. I told him to take down that stupid site.” Buffy shook her head as she contemplated what she would do to the geeky Watcher when she saw him next. “Yeah, pretty much. Most of it is true but there is a lot of Andrew’s fanboy geekiness too. And as to why this has shown up now is complicated.
Vampires tend to be attracted to where a Slayer is and Slayers tend to be attracted to where vampires are. A sort of balance thing. But vampires and other demons are also attracted to places of mystical power so of course so are Slayers. Sunnydale was a hellmouth, a gateway to a number of hell dimensions. It was also my hometown, home crater now.”
“You’re from Sunnydale?” Munch asked. He leaned forward hoping to learn that the collapse of Sunnydale was caused by something other than the official story of a sink hole caused by old mines. “Wait a minute. I thought Slayers didn’t live long once they were called, no offense intended, and Sunnydale was like eight years ago.”
“It’s okay. You’re right. Being called was pretty much a death sentence. The average lifespan of a Slayer was about eight to nine months once called. A few made it to eighteen and…” Buffy looked like she was about to say something but thought better of it. “How old to you think I am. I was called at fifteen.”
“I don’t know. Eighteen, maybe nineteen. I thought you were probably underage when I first met you in that bar,” Elliot said as he looked at her closer. “Maybe twenty tops.”
“I’m thirty-two. I was never much on traditions,” Buffy smiled as they all looked at her closer knowing that she didn’t look anywhere near her actual age. “I did die but it didn’t take. I was killed by a vampire but a friend was able to resuscitate me.”
“If a vampire killed you shouldn’t you be a vampire now?” Olivia asked.
“No. If a vamp wants to turn you they have to suck your blood. Then they make you suck their blood. It’s this whole sucking thing but most of the time they just kill you,” Buffy said, “Besides you can’t turn a Slayer.” Buffy took a sip from her freshly refilled diet Coke before she continued. “So anyway, a lot of the things about Slayers have changed lately. For one thing there is now more than one Slayer. At last count we have located just under four hundred worldwide.”
“What?” Munch sputtered, he had spent a lot of time researching Slayers ever since the possibility first came up after Elliot’s first encounter with Buffy and the one thing that all sources agreed on was ‘one girl in all the world’. “How can there be so many? All the legends say there is only one. And if there are so many why haven’t we heard more about them?”
“There didn’t used to be so many. When I was called I was the only one. When I died Kendra was called and with me still alive after being revived there were two. Shortly after she was called Kendra was killed by Drusilla, a crazy master vampire, and then Faith was called.”
“But that’s still only two,” Finn said, “how do you get from two to four hundred?”
“I’m sure you’ve all heard about what happened to Sunnydale, I mean it on the news for weeks.” Buffy paused as she saw them all nodding and slowly realizing that the official story probably lacked something. “We were facing an apocalypse. And yes, I do mean an end of the world as we know it apocalypse. Oh, you might want to look up the plural of apocalypse since there will be more. Apocalypse season usually starts around May.”
“Apocalypse season! You mean there is an actual season for the world coming to an end?” Elliot started to yell until he realized they were in public and just what they were talking about.
“Welcome to my world,” Buffy said with a sad smirk. “Oh, and Tuesdays are typically the day for Dawn to be kidnapped but since she’s in England right now you probably won’t get involved with that. But anyway on to why so many Slayers and it has to do with why I’m here. We were facing The First, The First Evil, the source of all evil in the world and it was kicking our asses. The First planned on wiping out the Slayer line so that it’s taking over the world would be unopposed so it sent it’s minions out to find and kill the Potentials. A Potential is a girl who when the current Slayer dies could become the next Slayer. The First figured once all the potentials were dead it would then kill Faith and then me and there would be no more Slayer.
The First was incorporeal, it couldn’t take solid form but it could appear as any person who had ever died. We were getting ready to fight one final battle with the minions of The First when it came to me in my own form. It wanted to taunt me, to instill doubt and fear but what it did was give me the inspiration for how we could defeat it. It told me that I was the Slayer, the one girl in all the world, she alone… and it told me that that was how I was going to die. Alone.” Buffy paused for a drink and she caught Elliot’s shiver at the thought of dying alone. “It was then I got the inspiration for what would allow us to turn back its armies and ultimately defeat it. I didn’t have to be alone.
Willow, one of out group is a very powerful witch, maybe the most powerful witch that ever lived, “Buffy held up her hand to hold off the comments that bringing witches in to the already incredible situation was certain to bring. “She used the essence of The Scythe, a weapon forged long ago and bound to the Slayer to call forth all the Potentials and make them Slayers. Now we had an army to battle the army of The First and we turned the tide of the battle long enough for us to destroy the hellmouth and seal off The First and its army. It had the unfortunate side effect of dropping the town of Sunnydale in to the hole also.”
“Are you saying that this could happen to New York City?” Elliot ask his face more than a little pale at the thought of eight million people disappearing down a giant sinkhole.
“No. New York isn’t on a hellmouth so it’s safe. At least it’s safe from what happened to Sunnydale. But with the hellmouth in Sunnydale destroyed the things that used to get attracted there are spreading out. And with so many Slayers we are trying to position them so that we can cover more of the places that are now seeing an increase in vampires and other demonic activity. Since I was coming here tracking the vampire who killed and turned those three girls I was asked to find a good location for a Slayer house and to make contact with the local authorities, you, and let them know what was the what.” Buffy said as she finished her drink and waved off a refill.
“So you’re part of some vampire fighting organization and looking to open up a branch office in New York?” Finn asked
“Pretty much. The NWSC, New Watchers and Slayers Council, a group we build from the remains of the old Watchers Council. We provide training and support for Slayers around the world. In fact there are two other members in town right now to meet a new Slayer and to tell her about who and what she is,” Buffy pulled out her cell phone as it buzzed and checked a text. “You’ll be meeting them in just a minute along with the newest Slayer.” Buffy looked up as Xander and Faith came in the door followed by a young girl with dirty blonde hair. The detectives turned and followed Buffy’s gaze and let out a collective gasp. “I believe you may know our newest Slayer.”
“Lizzie?” Elliot said in a shocked whisper.
“Hi, Daddy,” Lizzie said with a nervous smile.
“Welcome to the family,” Buffy said with a smile for the newest member of the Sisterhood.
A.N.: I’m going to call this complete here. It was only going to be a short little Ficlet but took on a life of its own. I hope that I left enough hooks in the story to use it as the first of a series of stories based in and around the NYC area.
