QueenCA: So this is one of my first attempts at writing for BTVS, so constructive criticism is welcome, as long as you're actually nice about it. I got a bit of inspiration when I was looking through random challenges and saw the one that 'gave birth' to this story. I just added to it and let Joyce be included (with a costume of her own, but from Bleach too). And yes...it is short. I'm working on writing longer chapters, but this was to get the 'creative juices' flowing...
So if you're a big Bleach fan, like I am, you'll probably be all "That's not what they're called! It's a zanpakuto and etc." Please keep in mind that I'm writing it like that for a reason. Dawn and Joyce don't know about all the 'details'. Xander might, as well as some others like Johnathan and Andrew, but as for the Summers women, Willow, etc...I doubt it. I'll probably have Dawn create a relationship with her sister that is similar to the one you see between Kenpachi and Yachiru...kind of. We'll see...
Disclaimer: I don't own Bleach or BTVS! I don't own any of the familiar content/characters you may see in this story. If I did, I'd be VERY rich...and I'm not.
Dawn was certainly not pouting as she walked into the last costume store in town with her mother. It was a quaint little store owned by a man named Ethan. He seemed like a nice man, but at the moment, all she cared about was finding a nice costume for Halloween.
She had a costume reserved at another store, but, from what she heard, they had lost her reservation for it and let someone else buy it. Her mother had been furious, demanded a full refund, and had left with her to find another store.
And that’s how they started ‘The Tour of Sunnydale’s Few Costume Stores’. Yeah, the name could use some work, but that’s what it had amounted too. They had gone around to the other stores and she had not found anything that appealed to her in the least. Dawn really hoped that she could find something here. She had heard that Buffy, Willow, and Xander had all found something here, so hopefully she would too.
She browsed through the displays, carefully sidestepping so she wouldn’t bump into anyone in the semi-crowded store. She looked around, seeing costumes for superheroes, angels or demons, and so on…but she still didn’t see anything that she liked. Dawn was beginning to lose hope that she would find something until she saw it…
It was towards the back of the store. It consisted of a short, pink wig and a barrette with a skull design, paired with some kind of black robe (she didn’t know what it was, but it looked like something from those Japanese cartoons Xander liked to watch), with socks and sandals. There was also a prop sword in a fake sheath, with two small wheels attached to the bottom of the sheath so she could just drag it behind her as she walked. All in all, she liked it.
“Have you found something you like, Dawn?” Joyce inquired, walking over to her youngest.
“Yeah, I did. Can we get it, mom?” she asked. She felt like she was close to begging, but she didn’t care. She really wanted this costume. Joyce simply smiled.
“If you really like it so much…” she trailed off, fighting to not laugh as her daughter nodded her head quickly and launched herself at her in a hug.
“Thanks mom! You’re the best!” she cheered, uncaring of the looks she was receiving. All she could think of was the fun she would have tonight. Joyce just smiled again while her eyes strayed to the costume beside the one her daughter had chosen. For some reason, she was feeling…drawn to it. It wasn’t too revealing and it looked like it was her size.
‘Who said the kids are the only ones who can dress up?’ she mused as she reached out and checked the price. It was a good deal.
The costume was similar to the one Dawn had chosen, except that her sheath had no wheels on it, she had some kind of white coat going over her robe, and the wig was long and black, with a braid going across the front of the costume.
“Ooh, mom, you should totally get that one!” Dawn said, looking excited at the idea. Plus it would be a huge shock to Buffy, seeing their mom all dressed up for the holiday, which would be another bonus.
“I think I will,” Joyce agreed, pulling the costume towards her while Dawn cheered and did the same with the one she had chosen. A few minutes later they had paid for the costumes and left. The shop owner wished them an enjoyable Halloween as they exited the building.
Once they were gone, Ethan let the smile fade and the smirk form. This Halloween was going to be chaotic!
