Rupert Giles was many of great experience, great magic and great wisdom. This meant, as Olivia explained later to Aia, that he fancied himself to be this generation’s Lawrence of Arabia, whom he clearly was not. Nor was he a Hannibal, or a tactician slash strategist of any sort either...a fact that didn’t prevent him from doing the negotiations with Quentin Travers, especially since it was his plan.
This plan began when Quentin arrive (with back-up) at Giles’ house. “Rupert, this better be important – there’s an outbreak of Nukekubi of WWII proportions in England and if you won’t help-“
“Look down,” Giles said evenly.
Travers looked. Then he looked again. “What is this?” he asked in a completely different tone of voice.
“A treasure from a minor temple from the land of Mu,” Giles said brightly, “fully enchanted and genuinely authentic, pardon the tautology. I need to get it out of my basement, so-o...”
There was a pause as Travers stared at Giles clearly realizing that something was afoot. “You’re hiding something,” he told flatly the other man.
“Yes,” Giles always believed that honesty was the best policy. “I do. What of it?”
“Nothing,” Travers backed down. “I daresay that the Council can be satisfied with the gold, enchanted or not. But, Rupert, don’t let this be another debacle as it was with that Slayer of yours.”
“Of course, Quentin,” Giles replied, looking quite sour himself. “It won’t.”* * *
“Well, is it done?” Olivia muttered some time later, closer to the evening, when it became obvious that the gold golem was gone from Giles’ basement. “The deed in general, I mean, not the golem.”
“Yes,” Giles nodded solemnly. “For now we’re back in the Council’s good books and they’re off our tails. Now all we have to do is to figure out what to do with Aia-“
“I’m keeping her,” Olivia said firmly, glancing at the room where Aia currently was taking a well-earned sleep. “I mean, not as a pet or anything, but we cannot let her go alone-“
“No, we can’t,” Giles agreed. “There’s a Nukekubi infestation, among other things. Looks like we’ll be sticking with each other for a while.”
“Yup,” Olivia replied, clearly happy with this development in her life. “Want to pick up where we left off?”
“Very well,” Giles agreed, “lead on!”
And their enthusiastic reunion almost broke Giles’ floor once again.End
