Jean-Claude hung up the phone in his office with a defeated sigh and turned to his second in command.
“What is it?” Asher raised an eyebrow at the expression on the other vampires face.
“That was an old acquaintance of mine. Rupert Giles, he is a member of the Watcher's Council. They train and watch over young girls that may eventually become Slayers. I know you must have run into a Slayer or two in all of your time. The problem is that his Slayer has something wrong with her, she is slowly starting to lose her mind and he fears she may be too far gone for any kind of help so he has asked for a favor. That is where you come in.” Jean-Claude sighed again and looked into the eyes of the man he once loved more than unlife itself and spoke again. “Rupert is hoping that if a master vampire was to make her his human servant than it may help tether her back to reality. Since he, in some way, trusts me but knows I have Anita....He has asked if you would do it.”
Asher closed his eyes for a moment to think before slowly responding. “Let me meet with her first. I must meet with her first...”
Two days later once dusk had set upon the Circus of the Damned, Jason led in three people.
“Rupert, would you like to introduce your companions?” Giles cleared his throat and pointed first to the tall and willowy brunette.
“This is Dawn Summers, my ward and sister to my Slayer, Buffy.” He finished his sentence by pointing to the slight blonde that was sitting in the corner of the couch in the room smiling at Jean-Claude.
“Puppy?” A confused look passed over Buffy's face as she cocked her head in Jason's direction. Jason looked towards the Master of the City and he nodded. Before their eyes the man that was Jason was now a giant wolf, the blonde then launched herself at the wolf and buried her face in the fur at his neck.
“Puppy!” She giggled and quieted down petting the man wolf allowing the others to speak.
“Thank you for allowing us entrance into your city.” Giles started off the conversation as he and Dawn sat down, their vantage point allowed them to keep an eye on the childlike slayer.
“What happened that brought you to us? Surely you know enough people to help with this.”
“Why that is true, we have tried everything we can think of. This is our last resort. There is simply too much power in her and it has no outlet. As much as she may never forgive me for this, I am willing to take that risk if making her a human servant even with only one or two marks would help her.” From his view in the shadows of the room Asher looked and saw an old man, forced to hand his surrogate daughter over to save her life and wishing there was another way. He saw a little sister forced to grow up, yet look oddly content as she watched her older sibling laugh and play with the werewolf.
Then he really looked at the woman they were hoping he would claim. Years of fighting could be seen upon her body from muscle tone to the faint line of scars from battles won. Her delicate features lit up with excitement as she played with the large wolf as if it was a small puppy.
His gaze was fixed on her as he listened to them continue to negotiate the terms of keeping the girl here. So fixed in his viewing, he did not notice the sister make her way over to his hiding spot.
“Are you the one who will do it?” Years of practice helped him remain still as if he was not startled.
“Yes, I am.”
“Are you a good Master to be under? Will you make sure she eats even when she does not want to? You have to make her eat more than a normal human girl. She will fight you on this, just ply her with compliments and logic and you will win most of the time. She cannot be left alone at night right now, a part of her knows she should be out there fighting but the part of her that is showing now does not know why.” Dawn ended her ramble with a small smile.
“I think I would be a good one to her if she accepts me, and yes I will make sure that she eats, is not alone and will want for nothing.” That seemed to satisfy the girl then a small frown formed upon her face.
“I know we had to get special permission this time to even come into this city. Will you allow me to still visit after you have claimed her?” When Asher smiled Dawn breathed a sigh of relief and launched herself at him, wrapping him in a hug.
“Why do you do that? I understand you are grateful, but do you not see the monster visage?” Dawn merely leaned her head back and looked up at him straight on, scars and all.
“We all have scars, some more visible than others. You will be hard pressed to ever find a Summers woman who would judge. While I am grateful, it is more than that. If this works you are it for her. So by oddly twisting default, you are family. In the Summers household, we hug family.” He nodded his head jerkily and gave the young woman an awkward pat on the back noticing that Buffy was sitting up and looking at them happily.
