chapter 11

All characters from the Dune Universe are property of the Frank Herbert Estate. All characters from the Buffyverse are Property of Joss Whedon. Everything else belongs to me.

The thing the ecologically illiterate don’t realize about an ecosystem is that it’s a system. A system! A system maintains a certain fluid stability that can be destroyed by a misstep in just one niche. A system has order, a flowing from point to point. If something dams the flow, order collapses. The untrained might miss that collapse until it was too late. That’s why the highest function of ecology is the understanding of consequences.

- Pardot Kynes in "Appendix I: The Ecology of Dune"

The room was hidden behind a false panel in her quarters. Reverend Mother Basilah pressed a series of buttons at her desk. A part of the wall slid back revealing the dark space beyond. She entered the darkness. Glow globes sprang to life. Basilah sat at the communications station and pressed a simple red button. The device she used was hardwired to only make calls to the Mother Superior.

Only four times in her life had she ever used such a device. It was a bit of trickery from IX. She could see why no one trusted the technology they produced. She could see why Leto banned advanced technology. It bordered on magic. If he had not held back technological development for the last three thousand years there would be nothing recognizable as human in the universe. There came a buzz from the device. Light years away the Mother Superior had responded to her call.

“Status report.” Said the Mother Superior coldly. She had the voice of an old woman.

“Everything has gone as planned. The Buffy has conducted a superficial examination of what we have here. She has no clue as to our true intent.“ Basilah replied. Nearly her entire cell had gone into panic mode two years ago when Buffy had shown up out of nowhere at the Main Chapter house and demanded an unrestricted examination of Arrakis. They knew she had power. They knew she was the mother of Liam Atreides. They still shuttered at the memory of the razing of Wallach IX. Liam had taken the slayer fleet and incinerated half of the planet because he knew they had betrayed him. They knew that there would be a price to pay for passing the genes of Liam Atreides to the Bene Tleilax. They had no choice. The orders came directly from the Senior Partners. Basilah continued her report.

“We were surprised in the pit.” She said. “Some of the projects were still active.” Basilah paused for a moment to let the implications of that statement sink in.

“Has the prototype been removed?” Mother Superior asked.

“Yes.” Basilah answered. “However, the extraction was witnessed by the Buffy.” Basilah could hear the Mother Superior exhale.

“What of the child?” She asked. “Is it stable?”

“Yes, Mother Superior.” Basilah said. “The sample is still stable at this point. It needs to be extracted before we can move to the second phase.” The Mother Superior agreed.

“We will leave that to our allies. They have retrieved the prototype. They can take the child as well.” The Mother Superior said.

“Understood.” Basilah said. “There is also the matter of the sample. A sample of the source material was found. I told her it was Willow’s.”

“Did she believe you?” The Mother Superior asked.

“Yes, I think." She said. "The truth is the best deception. Once you think you understand something you stop asking questions.” Something occurred to her.

“Why do we even need this power we are trying to capture?” Basilah asked. She often questioned her sect’s plan to domesticate the supernatural.

“The humans are becoming a threat. They are proceeding too fast. They are within reach of the power to challenge us!” Mother Superior answered. There was venom in her voice.

“Are you human?” Basilah asked to herself. She had never actually met the Mother Superior personally. She knew some of the terrible decisions the Mother Superior had made over the years. Her question was not rhetorical.

“This is why we stole the identity of the Bene Gesserit all those thousands of year ago. This is why we suppressed the magics of the Kwisatz Haderach. The Senior Partners are very big on having the apocalypse on their schedule.” The Mother Superior caught herself.

“They were…

“Understood.” Basilah said. She wished to spare the Mother Superior a vulgar display of emotions. Her entire cell grieved at the deaths of the Senior Partners. They were killed by a predator of incredible power and determination. They were on the verge of disbanding when others stepped in to keep the project alive. As a member of a sect that had infiltrated the Bene Gesserit, Basilah, was often at the center of strange and powerful forces. Even with all she had seen and done she often meditated on the events of Arrakis and the things done by a single family.

“The Atreides shook the foundations of heaven and Earth.” She thought. “First Paul, then Leto, then Liam.” Under the direct control of a being called the Destroyer, Leto’s slayers had cooked up the Kwisatz Haderach in its true form. The same Kwisatz Haderach her sect had managed to keep out of the hands of the original Bene Gesserit. The Kwisatz Haderach was a binary weapon consisting of flesh and magic. It could bridge the multiverse and all points in space and time. It was the local manifestation of a being that embraced trillions of universes. Those women were not worthy of such power.

The Kwisatz Haderach was designed to destroy a being of cosmic proportions known as the First. Liam was successful. At the death of the First, the entire planet had been blessed by sparks of its mystical energies. The entire planet became holy ground. Basilah and her sect sought to extract that energy for their own purposes.

“How long?” Basilah asked.

“By tomorrow.” Mother Superior said. “Our allies will arrive and settle the Buffy issue once and for all.” Her voice sounded cold. Basilah smiled.

“Good.” She said. She made her pleasantries then cut the connection.
