-BTVS, “Welcome to the Hellmouth” S01E01

She was furious. Buffy marched back to the opening of the steich. She felt like there was a fire burning inside of her. The Bene Gesserit had experimented on young girls and had made monsters out of them. She felt her powers starting to build to apocalyptic levels. She could destroy this whole steich and turn a fair amount of the Arrakis desert into molten glass. Only because of her hundreds of years of training was she able to control her emotions. She hoped to keep Basilah alive long enough to answer her questions. Reverend Mother Basilah could see Buffy coming towards her. She knew the slayer was furious. Basilah had anticipated this eventuality.

Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death. I will face my fear and allow it to pass through me.” She spoke the litany against fear.

“What did you do?” Buffy demanded to know as she planted herself in front of the Bene Gesserit. Basilah choose her next words carefully.

“You came to us.” Basilah said. “Your prophecy dreams lead you back to Arrakis. You demanded that we grant you access. Have your prophecy dreams left you blind?” Buffy grabbed her by the neck and lifted her off the ground.

“Don’t play with me.” She said. Buffy forced herself not to crush her windpipe. She sat the Bene Gesserit down. It took Basilah a moment to get her voice back.

“Nearly eighty year ago, the Bene Tleilax discovered a set of inert genes present in some humans. They searched for ways to activate those genes just to see what they would do.” Basilah was rubbing her throat which was still sore. “To their shock they discovered that the genes were artificial. They behaved in ways not found in nature. “Basilah struggled to find the words. She struggled to find a way to take something as profound as this and make it simple. “The genes encoded for magic instead of protein.”

Something was missing from that story. “How did they get the genes to grow?” Buffy asked.

“They implanted them in vat grown lifeforms.” Basilah said.

“The girls…” Buffy muttered.

Basilah made a dismissive sound. “That thing downstairs is one of the lucky failures.” She said. “Most of the lifeforms tested died.”

“How did the Bene Tleilax find these genes?” Buffy asked. She knew that the Bene Tleilax had thousands of years of experience with the human genome. They would have noticed artificial genes long ago.

“Unknown.” Basilah said. “They just showed up one day in a laboratory sample.”

“Magic genes just showed up? Buffy was incredulous. “I want to talk to the lab techs that discovered these genes.”

Buffy knew the history of the Bene Gesserit and their breeding program. They had bred humans for thousands of generations in order to achieve their version of the Kwisatz Haderach, the shorting of the way. They wanted a tool to spy on the great houses. They wanted to use the technology given to them by the Powers That Be as a system of control. They rejected the mission and the magics that came with the Kwisatz Haderach. The Kwisatz Haderach was a weapon built to destroy the First. It wasn’t until her son, the third Atreides emperor, that the Kwisatz Haderach was created in its true form. Buffy knew that the Bene Tleilax had access to her son’s genes. She shuttered when she thought of what they may have achieved over the last five hundred years.

“They’re dead, all dead.” Basilah said. “A year after the genes were discovered, they were killed in a shuttlecraft accident. The mechanical mix of the fusion engines caused an explosion. They were all killed instantly.” Buffy did the math in her head. She had some mentat training. She saw in her mind’s eye a probability overlay on top of a path matrix. The conclusion was obvious. Either a lot of things had all gone wrong at the same time or they were murdered. That left only one question.

“Why would someone give humans synthetic genes that produce magic?” Buffy thought. “What are they building?” Whatever it was they preferred that the Humans build it first. Something clicked in her mind. She remembered the dimensional scan of the girl in the cube. The implications were clear.

“The girl at the pit, the one we came across earlier. Was she one of your creations?” Buffy asked.

“Yes. “Answered Reverend Mother Basilah. “That’s why you have to find her. She was the breakthrough. She was the one that worked.” Buffy understood. But what concerned her more was the fact that the girl at the pit recognized her as the emissary of the Destroyer and called her the enemy.

“Let’s go.” Buffy said as she headed towards the flyer. Abd and Basilah fell in line after her. Buffy allowed Abd to catch up with her. She remembered a promise she made to him.

“I haven’t been totally honest with you.” Buffy said. Abd agreed. Nothing here was as he expected. He knew Arrakis was a source of mystery and wonder but these events were beyond his wildest dreams.

“Who are you?” Abd asked. “What are you?”

“My name is Buffy Anne Summers. I was born on Earth ten thousand years ago. I was resurrected by the sprit source of the slayers and appointed the Emissary of that very same spirit. I am the permanent apocalypse. I cannot die. I am also the mother of Liam Atreides the third emperor of Dune and I think that the Bene Gesserit have done something very stupid with my son’s DNA.”

“We came here after…”

“Yes.” Buffy agreed. “I was called back to Arrakis by a vision. I can see the future better than any of those witches.” Buffy was looking at Reverend Mother Basilah. The vision showed me a monster with the face of a girl and the symbol of twilight wrapped in flames. I have been away for a very long time. I recruited you as my native guide. Your research is quite insightful.” Buffy smiled at the professor.

“I see.” Abd said. “So what do you think is going on now?” He asked.

“I think that someone is using us to build the perfect beast.” She said. They boarded the flyer. Basilah ignited the engines. They leapt into the air.
They found her after three hours of searching. Basilah had received updates from the surveillance satellites in orbit. They could see a tiny dot of a girl standing alone in a sea of Dunes under the desert sun.

“Fly by.” Buffy said. “Don’t bother landing. Return to the chapterhouse. I’ll meet you there.” Basilah brought the flyer down and low over the sands. She left a trail of dust behind them. As they passed the girl Buffy hit the eject button on her seat. She rode a pillar of orange white fire into the sky. The fire died. Buffy unstrapped herself from the seat that tumbled away in the air. Her body flew in a long graceful arc as she ripped her clothing from her skin. Buffy fell from the sky and slammed into the desert. She landed on her feet and stood upright robed in white body armor. This was a gift from the Destroyer. This made her indestructible. Buffy launched herself at the impossible girl and slammed into her. The world dissolved into white. She looked around. She was back at Sunnydale High. Students walked past her. Some pointed and whispered at the strange girl. Xander walked up behind her. He had a strange look on his face. Buffy’s white armor was skin tight. It hid nothing. Xander’s eyes were on her breasts.

Whoa Buf, have those puppies gotten bigger?” He asked. Buffy was dumbstruck. She felt someone poking her face. She closed her eyes then reopened them. She found herself looking up at the strange girl she had come to confront.

“Are you dead?” The impossible girl asked as she continued to poke Buffy in the face with her finger. Buffy brushed the girl’s finger away. The girl stood.

“There’s so much about this plane of existence I have to explore. She turned to walk away. Her skin blazed white. The desert was filled with the sound of rushing water and the noises of worlds unseen and then she was gone. Buffy sat up. This was not what she expected. Her prophecy dreams had told her to come here but now she knew that there was much more here that she’d realized. As she had told Abd, her dreams had shown her the impossible girl and the twilight logo wrapped in flames. But this was the part that she had not told him, there was a voice speaking to her in her dream. The voice had said “That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

“They’re building Old Ones.” Buffy thought. She had come to a mentat prime conclusion. “Not on my watch.” She said to herself.
