There exists a limit to the force even the most powerful may apply without destroying themselves. Judging this limit is the true artistry of government. Misuse of power is the fatal sin. The law cannot be a tool of vengeance, never a hostage, nor a fortification against the martyrs it has created. You cannot threaten any individual and escape the consequences.
Muad'Dib on Law The Stilgar Commentary
She stood over the burnt body of Reverend Mother Basilah. Buffy watched the Bene Gesserit in her hospital bed for long minutes before making up her mind. The Bene Gesserit had been a pain in the side of the slayers since the day Leto resurrected them. She understood now why her son had taken the slayer fleet to Wallach IX and burned the planet to the ground. In their own way, the Bene Gesserit were worst than the Fish Speakers. The Bene Gesserit constantly looked for ways to compromise the slayers and bring them into the fold.
“Leto gave us a clear and separate mandate.” Buffy thought. “We are the ultimate authority on all things supernatural.” It said so on the peace treaty of the first Slayer-Fish Speaker war.
This particular Bene Gesserit was part of a scheme to resurrect the Great Old Ones. The slayers had invoked the destruction of the Old Ones aboard Leto’s planet killer “Her Graceful Measure.” Now this idiot was part of a conspiracy to bring them back.
“I should kill you right now.” Buffy thought. She had learned to act decisively over the centuries. She frowned when she realized that she would need Basilah a little while longer. Buffy examined the ring Basilah wore on her finger. It definitely held the Wolfram and Hart logo.
“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in
.” She thought. Wolfram and Hart was a law firm that ran most of the evil on Earth thousands of years ago. Her old boyfriend ran the company at one time.
“They started the blood storm.” Buffy thought referring to the plans of the Senior Partners to open a hellmouth on Arrakis and flood the planet with billions of Turok-Han. It had been stopped when Surayya Atreides had grabbed a mountain out of the sky and slammed it onto Arrakis giving birth to Mount Surayya in the process. Motorria Swati, Liam’s birth mother, had used the magics of the scythe to sever the connection between the Senior Partners and this universe. Buffy slapped her head as something occurred to her.
“What about the other universes?” She thought. She knew about the multiverse. Her son was the voice of the infinite number of universes beyond this one. The removal of the Senior Partners here did not eradicate the Senior Partners elsewhere. “There are Wolfram and Hart office’s in nearly every universe.” Buffy focused her attention back to Basilah. Buffy realized that she was just the tip of the iceberg.
“She’s a hand.” Buffy thought. “Others are involved. I must find the head and cut it off.” Buffy exhaled all the air in her lungs venting her frustration as she began the healing chant. Six hours later she exited the room drenched in sweat and bone tired. Basilah was healed. She would live. The cloister bell rang in low gray tones. Buffy remembered why. She turned to head for the memorable for all the people killed by the impossible girl. Before:
The rebuilt slayer fleet appeared above the home world of the Bene Gesserit. The ships contained the latest human technology from IX. The new ships were silver white with force shields and antimatter cannons. The “Memories of Dawn” was still their flagship and Guerrero was still fleet commander. But, today he was in charge. Liam knew from his prescient visions that the Bene Gesserit and Tleilaxu had already betrayed him. The Bene Gesserit had passed his cells to the Tleilaxu that grew them for the demon Sahjhan for purposes he could not see.
“After I warned them.” He said. He could barely contain his anger. Liam paced the command center of the “Memories of Dawn.” Guerrero looked up at him. They all knew why they were here. She was grateful she didn’t have to give the order herself. Liam stood for a long moment, his arms crossed, looking out onto Wallach IX, the main chapterhouse and home world of the Bene Gesserit.
“This is where they first met to destroy my father.” Liam thought. That memory burned within him. “These women are so arrogant. They see nothing as holy. All they care for is their own ambitions.” Liam gave the order. He burned half the planet.
“If I can’t have respect, I’ll settle for fear.” He thought. Liam watched the planet burn then ordered the fleet back to Arrakis.
Buffy watched Basilah awaken. The Bene Gesserit stirred slowly in her bed. Buffy watched as she checked her bandages then the rest of her body. Basilah spotted her. Buffy watched the range of emotion on her face move from surprise to worry to fear all underlined by hate. Her Bene Gesserit training had failed her completely.
“I told the Mother Superior hundreds of years ago that I see no reason I shouldn’t spend the rest of my eternal life hunting down and killing every Bene Gesserit in the universe.” Buffy said. “I think she believed me.”
Basilah slowly set up in her bed. She was still feeling weak. Her eyes watched Buffy intensely. She could tell the slayer was upset.
“We…” Basilah started to say.
“I was promised!
” Buffy yelled. She used just enough of the Voice to make Basilah’s heart jump. “I was promised unlimited access and no lies.”
Basilah looked at her. Buffy could tell she was deciding which lie to tell. Buffy remembered her Bene Gesserit training.
“The truth can be found by how muscle tension betrays the liar. The mind spin’s it’s deceptions but the brain is wired to automatically respond to what it believes to be true.”
Buffy could hear the voice of the Reverend Mother that trained her. She knew Basilah was about to lie.
“Lie to me and I will spend the next ten thousand years hunting down and killing every Bene Gesserit in the galaxy!” Buffy spat out. Basilah looked chest fallen. Buffy walked over to her. She leaned over her placing her body in intimidate contact. Buffy whispered into her ear.
“I am the gom jabbar
now.” She said. “I am the pain that cannot be denied.” Basilah’s eyes grew wide. So it was true! Buffy was becoming Kwisatz Haderach!
“Fear is the mind killer; fear is the little death…” Basilah started to mutter.
“Stop breathing.” Buffy said softly. Basilah’s lungs stopped moving. Buffy straightened. She stood over Basilah. Her face betrayed no emotion.
“The same power that healed you can kill you.” Buffy said. “ I can access any nerve in your body no matter how deep it is buried inside of you. The Mother Superior knew this. Lie to me and I’ll stop your heart while making you believe that you are on fire.” Buffy said. She waited long minutes and then said. “Breathe.” Basilah inhaled sharply.
“How many?” Buffy asked as she walked back to her seat. “How many subjects were given these genes?” She asked.
“Fifty-seven.” Basilah said. “We found fifty-seven of them.”
“Is this the work of Wolfram and Hart?” Buffy asked. Basilah looked at her puzzled. Buffy could tell she was shifting information around in her head. “I have fire.” Buffy said playfully as a reminder.
“I’m not lying.” Basilah said desperately. “I have no knowledge of this Wolfram and Hart.” Buffy could tell by her voice that she was telling the truth.
“Where did you get that ring?” Buffy asked as she pointed to the ring Basilah wore. “It has the Wolfram and Hart logo on it.” Basilah looked at the ring on her finger.
“It’s an heirloom. It’s been passed down in my family for generations.” Basilah said.” Something struck Buffy as odd.
generations?” she asked.
“As far back as the family records go. “Basilah said. “When I announced to the family that I had been accepted into the Bene Gesserit a big fuss was made. My grandmother gave me this ring.” Buffy was about to ask another question when Basilah interrupted her.
“Have you checked the pit?” Basilah asked. “Have you checked the pit where you first encountered the girl? There may be something there.” Buffy considered the question and came to a conclusion.
“Get some rest.” Buffy said as she stood to leave. “We’ll be making a trip soon. “ Buffy left the room. Basilah had won a small victory.
