A/N: This is a birthday present for CorruptedSmile. I hope you like it.

Spike woke up in the evening to the sound of high-pitched growls and whines. Instantly on high alert, he sneaked towards the noise to ensure that his Claimed wasn't in danger. The scene that greeted him as he entered the living room was not exactly what he was expecting.

“Xander, is that- What the hell is that?”

Xander looked up from where he was petting a rather large hyena-like animal and smiled. “I’m not sure exactly. It came through a portal along with some weird demons riding bigger versions of this little guy. I think he’s just a pup.”

“A pup?” exclaimed Spike. “He’s the size of a small pony. What kind of a creature is he supposed to be, if that’s a pup?”

“I’m not sure,” answered Xander. “But like I said, he came out of a portal with some others. The girls slayed them, ‘cause they were really aggressive, but this little guy stayed back all the time and hid behind me when the girls came after him. I think he felt the hyena left-overs. Anyway, he was just so helpless and he wasn’t trying to harm anyone, so I thought I could keep him for a while.”

The vampire sighed. “Xander, did you or did you not bring a demon dog in our house, because you thought it was cute?”

The synchronized pouts that Xander and the demon dog somehow produced (nothing with that many teeth should be capable of pouting, yet somehow that was exactly what it was doing) were uncanny.

“He’s not a demon dog,” said Xander petting his new friend. “For one thing, I’m fairly certain he’s not a dog. He’s probably closer to a hyena. And he’s not a demon. Look at him, he’s adorable. And non-aggressive.”

The pup took this as a cue to crawl towards Spike and present its belly. When Spike did nothing but look at it with an unimpressed look in his eyes, it whined pitifully. Xander turned the puppy-eyes™ up to 11 and added a little lip-wobble to make it extra effective. Spike tried valiantly to resist, but, damn it, he was only human (well, not really). With an exaggerated sigh he bent down and gave a pup a small rub. It yipped happily.

“Fine, keep the mutt. But I am not taking care of it. And if it chews on my Docs I’m taking it out of his hide.”

Xander grinned happily and rewarded Spike with an enthusiastic kiss.

“I’ll take care of him. He’ll be good. And if he chews on your Docs, you can take it out of my hide,” he added with a wink.

Spike thought that was fair enough and decided to collect his first payment in advance.

Xander didn’t mind.

A/N: As you might've guessed from the cross, the pup that Xander adopted is a warg puppy. I thought they were closer to hyenas than to wolves so Xander would be good with them.
