Chapter 2 in Which I Am Mistaken For A Buffy

Apparently, the principal, who had the unfortunate distinction of being named Flutie, was busy when I arrived. Jesse offered to keep me company until the Principal was able to see me but a plump secretary with a fearsome scowl shooed him away.

I sat, somewhat impatiently, watching as other students headed to their classes. Just what I needed. To get behind on my first day.

At last, a somewhat shaken blonde walked out of the principal’s office and presumably headed off to her own class. I’d bet money she was the ‘other’ new girl.

“Veronica Mars?” the Principal asked looking at me.

“Yes, sir.” I answered, standing.

“Please, come in.”

I followed him into his office where he picked up my transcripts and took a good, long gander.

“Ahh,” he sighed with what I could only describe as relief before giving me a spiel about a clean slate. The same one, I was certain, he had given the other new kid. When he was finished, I was set free into the outer office where Scowls, the secretary gave me my schedule.

Looking it over, I walked out into the hallway where I promptly bumped into Willow.

“Willow, Hi. I thought class had already started,” I said confused.

“Yeah, I just have to deliver this to Ms. Daniels.” She said before pointing to the paper in my hand. “Is that your schedule?”

“Yeah, and I really have no idea where I’m going,” I answered.

“Oh, I’ll be happy to show you to your first class. Just give me a second to deliver this and get a pass,” Willow answered disappearing into the office.

She was only gone for a minute when she came back out and asked to see my schedule.

“Cool. You’re in my first period class. It’s this way.”

I followed Willow to Graphics and Design in the computer lab. Luckily, I got to sit next to her in class and share her workbook but I’d need to go to the library at some point and get one of my own.

When I mentioned the library Willow got all excited and started telling me about the cool, new librarian.

I thought it was strange, two new kids and a new librarian all at once, but didn’t say anything. Didn’t want to get a reputation for being paranoid.

Willow walked me to the library after class but had to go to the water fountain after having a coughing fit. Concerned, I tried to follow but she waved me away. So, I complied with her wishes and went ahead to the library.

“Hello?” I called. “New kid, looking for books here.”

After a minute, an older man in a tweed jacket walked out of the back office.

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry. I’m Mr. Giles, the librarian. Can I help you?” The man asked in a British accent.

“I’m looking for some books. I’m new,” I explained.

“Buffy Summers?”

“I’m sorry, what?” I asked. Did he just call me Buffy? What’s a Buffy, I wondered.

“I’m Buffy,” A voice behind me said. “I need books, too.”

Oh. Mystery solved. The other new kid.

“Oh, of course, I’ll be right with you, Miss Summers,” He said before turning back to me. “Now, what can I help you with.”

I gave him my schedule and he found my books but I got the distinct impression that he was trying to rush me out of there.

“I know what you’re after,” I heard him tell Buffy as I walked out. He must have been mistaken because a minute later, as I stopped to pick up a book I had dropped, a freaked-looking Buffy practically sprinted by.
