Buffy: Excuse me?

Cordelia: Whatever is causing the Joan Collins 'tude, deal with it. Embrace the pain, spank your inner moppet, whatever, but get over it. 'Cause pretty soon you're not even gonna have the loser friends you've got now.

"When She Was Bad", BTVS S02E01

She watched the boy work. Surayya observed Spike in the Bene Gesserit way taught to her by Leto II. Spike had gone before her into their quarters. He had immediately ran into one of the bedrooms that overlooked the central plaza. The room he chose was at an angle to the main entrance. It had windows that gave a wide angle view of the courtyard of the Tleilaxu embassy.

“Nice move kid.” Surayya thought. The room he choose gave him a defensible premier as well as a view of any approaching enemies. “His tactical instincts are excellent.” Surayya wondered if she or Buffy would end up taking the room from him. “Too early to start throwing rank around.” She thought. She remembered the old Earth phrase. “Looks like the kid’s called shotgun.” Surayya observed him performing a weapons check. This was the thing that had caused quite a bit of dissention in the ranks. He was a slayer with all of her powers and authority. She knew in her head this made the human race stronger but she could feel the apprehension of having an alien in her space. She knew that in the sprit there was no male or female only the vagaries of character.

“On paper this should work.” She thought then smiled. “But then again, how often does anything go perfectly.” Buffy entered the room and stood beside her. She noticed the boy had already claimed the best room in the suite. She observed Surayya and remembered how frustrating Dawn could be.

“Kids will touch your stuff.” Buffy said to her. Surayya understood. They claimed the two remaining rooms. Hours later Buffy called a staff meeting. The slayers met in the central living area. Buffy spoke first.

“The Old Ones.” She said. “Any thoughts? Surayya shook her head in the negative.

“They’re just monsters. Let’s just kill them.” Spike said. Buffy and Surayya looked at him.

“These are not just monsters.” Buffy said disturbed at the thought that anyone could think that the Old Ones were something that could be handled with a quick staking.

“The Old Ones are gods!” Buffy said. “They are pure power wrapped in flesh. Imagine the power of the Destroyer put in a bottle with a extra dash of crazy.” Buffy was animate.

“But these aren’t our Old Ones.” Surayya said. The three slayers nodded. They all had the prophecy dreams.

“These Old Ones were made from flesh. They were built by genes that encode for magic.” Surayya said. “We don’t know what they are. All we know is that the Destroyer wants’ them gone.” Surayya spoke. Something was bothering her.

“If these Old Ones are flesh and blood can they be saved?” She asked. “I mean if they are beings of flesh could they also have souls?” Buffy and Spike were disturbed. They had never considered the possibility.

“Are you willing to kill Trinity?” Surayya asked. She remembered a conversation they had a long time ago about the mission of the emissary.

“I am the law.” Buffy said weakly. “I was built to destroy all monsters. I must protect the golden path.” Surayya flexed the muscles in her neck and shoulders as she let her anger wash through her. She had not forgotten about Drusilla. Buffy had killed her after she had gotten her soul back.

“Is there no grace in your power?” Surayya asked.

“No.” Buffy answered. “I am the Law.”

“I have the power of an Old One.” Surayya said. “Why aren’t you killing me?”

“You remember being human.” Buffy said. “And that saves you. Wanting to be human badly enough makes you human.”

“She was a girl before she was chosen. She was a person who was infected with the divine.” Surayya said. “Trinity never had a choice.”

“Neither did we.” Buffy snapped back. “Did Leto ask your permission before activating you and flinging you off to Talios Three to fight the Old Ones?”

“We were loved.” Surayya answered finally understanding why she held no ill will towards the former emperor. “Leto loved us and because of that we chose to give our power to his command. It’s not enough to have power Buffy you’ve got to leave room for human weakness, you must make some room for the cheese.” Buffy smiled. She remembered the cheese man from her dream.

“Ok, Suri.” Buffy said. “I’ll think about not killing monsters with souls.”
