He knows he shouldn't be listening, but it's a little hard not to hear with all the yelling. If he closes his eyes, it's almost like he's at home. Except Missouri doesn't sound anything like his mom and, well, Xander can't quite remember the last time his mom protected him like this.

"You so much as look at that boy, Bill, and I will..."

"For Christ sake, Missouri, I'm not going to interrogate him, he's my son's best friend. I just want to ask him a few more questions," Bill says. "He was there when Jesse was taken. He may even know the location of the nest."

"He's holding back, Missouri," another hunter adds.

Xander winces at the sound of John Winchester's voice. Out of all the hunters who have taken over the McNally home, he's the one Xander likes the least. There's something about the man that just seems wrong to Xander, and he's not entirely sure why.

"You mind your business, John Winchester," Missouri snaps. "Of course he's holding back. The boy isn't as stupid as he likes to pretend he is."

"Do you know what he's hiding?" John asks.

Missouri doesn't answer straight away, and Xander wonders what she's thinking. "He's trying to protect your stupid behinds."

There's a moment of silence before the rooms explodes with laughter.

It's at that moment Xander's estimation of the hunters drops. While Xander's relatively new to the supernatural scene, he knows power when he sees it and, as far as Xander's concern, Missouri is right up there with Buffy.

Because Missouri is right. He is trying to protect the hunters.

Xander's seen Buffy fight for her life against the vampires in Sunnydale. Hell, Xander had been right there with her. No matter what these hunters think, he knows they're not good enough to go up against the Master and his nest... even with Luke gone.

The fact that they don't believe Missouri bothers Xander.

"You laugh, but if you push that boy for information, and he gives it, you will die. I've seen it."

That makes the laughter falls away.

"I know you want to destroy the demon responsible for your son's death, Bill, and he will be," Missouri promises. "Just not by your hand."

"Like hell," Bill growls.

"She's right," Xander says, moving out from his hiding spot. "If you go after the Master, you'll die." He's the reason Jesse is dead.

"There's a master vampire here?" John Winchester asks, his eyes lighting up in a way that makes Xander uneasy.

"Yes, he's a little out of commission right now, but if you try to take him out he'll kill you." And Xander couldn't let that happen, not to Jesse's father.

"So who will take him out?"

Xander's eyes go wide and he looks to Missouri.

He knows exactly who will take out the Master, and if Missouri is as good a psychic as Xander thinks, she knows too.

And telling these hunters about Buffy, right now, seems like a bad idea. Especially without her permission and without know more about the men in the room. He's sure they're all good people, but he doesn't know them, not enough to put Buffy or Willow's life in their hands.

Missouri walks over to him and links her arm with his.

"Never you mind," Missouri tells them.

And in that moment, Missouri is Xander's favourite person.
