Memorial Day - One Year Later
"We come together today in remembrance and celebration. It was only one year ago today our world changed forever. No one can forget the day we learned the truth about the Powers, and how through a few brave people regained our freedom and liberties," CiCi announced, looking cool and gorgeous as ever.
"Nations across the world have been hard at work to recover from this tragedy. They, as we here in the United States, are working to create new governments with their population's full participation. We learned a very hard lesson and don't want to repeat our predecessor's mistake. With this in mind, I have the honor of sharing a pre-recorded message with you. It's from someone we hope never to forget, and I personally want to thank for her bravery. I know she didn't do what she did for us, but we have all reaped the rewards from her thirst for vengeance. I can only hope it won't ever come to pass that we forget her sacrifice. With that said, I proudly bring you this."
She waved her arm toward the large monitors behind her as she faded from view. The screen faded slowly from black to show bright blue eyes in a white painted face. Black vertical lines slashed downward to create the well-known V
. I know if you are watching this then I have succeeded in my quest for vengeance against The Powers. I'm not sorry for the things I've done and am no doubt paying for them in Hell. You have the opportunity to gain from my deeds, and what you do with it is totally up to you. Remember this day, and what it truly means. Weep for those you've lost and hold close those who remain.
Vengeance filled my days, and I took it on as my nom de plume. I want you to remember me as you gather your tattered liberties about you, and hopefully, create a better world. Keep me close in your memories as an example of what can happen if you don't remain ever vigilante. You must always hold your voice and liberties close to your heart, never allow them to quiet. Ask, investigate and never take anything at face value.
I leave you with this one request." Holding two fingers up in the V symbol, she continued, "Take my symbol as your own, but no longer think of vengeance as it ruled my life. Proudly hold your hands up to show what you have overcome and will never allow it to fade. I ask you to salute, not to vengeance but to victory. Never allow it to fade into the night, for you never know…I've risen from the dead before, and may return to haunt your days. Raise them, each of you, and remain ever vigilant. May God have mercy on your souls should you falter."
The screen faded to black as fireworks lit the night sky. People filled the former Capitol square. They held up candles in memory of those lost. Slowly, surely, like the tide rolling in, arms lifted to the skies with fingers spread.Victory...Victory...Victory!
Somewhere deep below ground in an unknown location, a door stood locked and chained. Echoes of the crowd filtered down into the darkened tunnel. On closer inspection, numbers showed through dirt and grime - 314.
The fireworks and shouts couldn't cover the chilling sound of laughter. It bounced off the walls, increasing in volume as clawed hands reached through the barred window. A crazed face pressed through the bars.
"Ooh, I can't wait to join the celebration." A soft Irish brogue gave the words a seductive flavor. "Too bad, Buff isn't around to go as my date."
The door rattled against the continued force applied. It slowly gave under the pressure. A leather-clad leg slid through the opening. ~ The End ~
