BTVS: takes place during Halloween. Set some time in Season 2 of Stargate, so spoilers for any time before. Disclaimer:
I own nothing. Buffy and Angel people belong to Joss and Mutant Enemy. The Stargate people belong to Gekko Productions, Double Secret Productions, MGM/UA, Showtime/Viacom. Author's note:
A very dedicated reviewer made a comment about whether or not Joyce owned the Gallery in canon. Since there is no definitive proof, and it was never mentioned after she died, I am of the opinion that she ran/managed it. It makes far more sense to me than her being an owner. Also, this entire series was written through for the August-Fic-A-Day Challenge, so answers will be throughout the series - and possibly in anything I write later.
It didn't make sense.
No matter how many times Daniel watched the video footage of the Halloween party, it simply didn't make sense. At first, Daniel had put it down to poor quality. The Sunnydale PD had, apparently, lost the original footage captured by the Gallery's surveillance system, so the SGC were relying on the somewhat limited footage taken by one of the party guests, an artist from Santa Barbara. A guest who, interestingly enough, had fled the party - and the town - after Joyce had killed her third victim, and had later gone to a police station in Santa Barbara. It was how the SGC had found out about the incident - the Santa Barbara police had filed a more detailed report than the Sunnydale PD, a report which caught the attention of the SGC.
But the strange behaviour of the Sunnydale Police Department wasn't the most confusing aspect of what happened that night.
No, watching Joyce on the video took top honours.
They had interviewed everyone who had attended the party and only a few people, the artist from Santa Barbara and a buyer from Los Angeles, seemed to be able to give them any useful information, but the information did little to help Daniel understand what happened. Even the background check on Joyce Summers didn't help make sense of anything. They knew everything about her - from what grades she got in high school, to the date she was married, divorced and everything in between. They knew that she took a year off between high school and college and travelled through Europe. She had never been to Egypt. In fact, she hadn't left the country since she got married. Joyce led a simple, if sometimes painful, life.
As Jack would say, she lived the cliche. She finished school, went to college, got married, had a daughter, and then moved her daughter away from the city when she and her husband got divorced and her daughter had started acting out.
There was nothing that could explain how Joyce Summers had been exposed to the Goa'uld. There was no explanation as to how Joyce was a normal human being one moment and Hathor, as she had claimed on the video, the next.
And, as insane as it sounded, that was exactly what Daniel believe had happened. He had seen
the Goa'uld ribbon device turn from a gold hair ribbon wrapped around her hand and wrist (which he had seen her fiddle with almost constantly from the moment she arrived at the party) to an actual ribbon device and then back again.
To top it all off, there was no sign of a Goa'uld symbiote having ever been inside her. They had performed every test they knew and they had all come back negative. Even Teal'c was unable sense a symbiote, nor could Sam.
Daniel sighed as he walked towards the holding cells to once again see to Joyce, and hopefully get her to talk (because he didn't believe for a minute that she didn't remember anything, no matter how many times she said it). He was convinced that she knew something,
because she had never once complained about being held without actually being charged with any crime. Nor did she complain about all the different tests they put her though. Tests she had to know weren't normal. Then, of course, there was the look in her eyes.
The sheer volume of pain Daniel saw whenever she looked at him convinced him that she knew what happened, and just didn't want to talk about it.
He nodded to the two airmen guarding her room and then knocked softly. When he heard the quiet "come in" he opened the door and almost wished he could turn around and walk back out again. She looked utterly exhausted, not surprising given the nightmares she had been having since she arrived at the SGC. His heart broke for her.
"Doctor Jackson," she greeting him. Her expression, while welcoming, was wary as always. She didn't trust them. Not that Daniel could blame her.
"I thought I told you to call me Daniel?"
She didn't comment. God, he hated not understanding what had happened to her and he was terrified that the same thing could happen to someone else.
When she didn't say anything, Daniel felt compelled to. "I was thinking today that maybe we could take a break from the usual." He held up a few books he was holding out to her. To be honest, he hoped that by relaxing a little Joyce would open up. "I brought you some books I thought you might like to read."
She smiled. "Thank you." To Daniel's surprise, Joyce picked up a piece of paper and held it out to him. "I have something for you, too."
Daniel couldn't help himself, as soon as he took the piece of paper from Joyce he opened it. "What is this?" Well, he knew what it was, he just wasn't expecting to receive it from Joyce.
"It's the co-ordinates to the planet Hathor is currently hiding. She's still angry about what happened when she was here in the SGC. She's working on a way to capture you and your team. She's planning on creating a complete replica of the SGC, so she can extract as much information about Earth as she can. Once she succeeds, she plans to implant you all with Goa'uld symbiotes. It's not finished yet, but it will be soon."
He stared at her stunned. "How... how do you know this?"
Joyce looked at him, her eyes haunted. "I don't know."
Daniel was beginning to wonder if anything would ever make sense again.-End-
