Uncle Sam Needs You

Another short challenge response from MissE's challenge, Uncle Sam Needs You, Yes Even You. You can read the challenge in its entirety here: The basic premise is Jack get’s a hold of information regarding a Hok’taur hoping to recruit or at least investigate at a very bad time for Buffy. As always, these characters belong to Joss Whedon and MGM. Have a wonderful day!

Set after 5:11 Desperate Measure before 5:13 Proving Grounds. Season Five for Buffy.

Jack returned home from the set of Wormhole X-Treme! and cracked a beer. He was about to order a pizza and flip on the telly when he saw movement in the shadows of his living room.

“You really ought to lock your doors.”

“If I thought it would keep scum like you out, I would.” He said. “What do you want.” Jack pointed his gun at him, and waited.

“I hear you’re in the market for new cadets.”

“Get out.”

“Have you ever heard of a Hok’tar?”

“They are humans with advanced abilities. Some were created by Goa’uld to be superior hosts, and others simply exist, and we don’t know why.”

“What’s your point Harry?”

“My point is, I know where to find one.”

“Is he a Goa’uld plant?” Jack asked.

“No, she’s something more.”

“Oh yes, and she’s marvellous. If I wasn’t afraid she’d kill me on sight, I’d try to persuade her to join the NID, but that bridge was burned, salted and buried.”

“Get out.”

“I’ll just leave this with you. Contact me if you change your mind.” Maybourne slipped out the back door, and Jack picked up the disc. Taking a swig of beer, he popped it in the DVD player and sat back to watch. At first he wasn’t quite sure what he was seeing, but it was obviously some kind of training exercise, and he watched as a girl no bigger than Frasier took out several very large marines with ease. Then he watched her neutralize them in the field, and then the really weird stuff started. There was some kind of set up, and a Dr Walsh was apparently trying to kill her, but she managed to kill what she called demons and threaten the doctor. The final videos were the most bizarre. It showed her fighting some kind of Frankenstein monster with glowing eyes and Jack sat up fast rewinding the tape. Was she a Goa’uld after all? The way she stopped things with her hands seemed to indicate that, but she had no hand device, and then he watched her save a bunker full of men from what looked like a large group of aliens. Was this some kind of joke?

Maybourne was a slippery fellow, but this was a little farfetched even for him. He’d have Carter and Daniel look into it in the morning but for now, he chose to believe Maybourne was full of it.

Carter and Daniel proved to be more of a problem than he thought they would be. Sam authenticated the images, explaining that it hadn’t been edited in any way she could find and Daniel, picking up one word on the disc, ran wild with explanations about this so called ‘slayer.’ Both insisted that they meet her. Teal’c didn’t say much, but he obviously marvelled at the girls fighting ability, and it didn’t take much for Hammond to order an investigation.

“But sir!”

“No Jack. This could be some kind of foot hold situation, and until we clear this girl and her friends, we can’t ignore this. You saw her eyes glow.”

“We also saw her turn bullets into birds, and as far as I know, no Goa’uld can do that.” Jack responded.

“That’s exactly my point, son. We don’t know. Find her, and let’s find out exactly what’s going on. Dismissed.”

Buffy was walking back from the Bronze after Spike explained his theory of how he was able to kill the slayers, when she felt that tingly feeling of being watched, again. For the last two weeks she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone, probably from Riley’s old group was following her. Based on the flash of green she saw before they disappeared. It was the only thing she could think of, and she knew they weren’t going to completely abandon their watch. She shrugged her shoulders and walked home.

A little while later, Buffy was sitting on the back porch crying with Spike of all people, er vampires, patting her back feeling like the world was closing in on her when a twig snapped. They stood up at the same time, and peered into the darkness beyond the area lit by the porch light. Spike pumped his gun and stalked out into the yard glaring around. Meanwhile, Buffy picked up a rock, and waited. Her sensitive hearing picked up a tiny noise and she instantly threw the rock at the thing she couldn’t see.

“Ouch!” A man screamed, and Spike pointed his gun.

“You can’t fire that in the neighbourhood, you could kill someone.” She picked up a handful of rock and tossed one to him.

“Well I can’t bloody throw rocks at them either.” Spike ground out.

“Right, then shut up so I can hear them.” She waited patiently until both Buffy and Spike had red dots trained on their shirts.

“Don’t move.” A man commanded from behind the neighbour’s fence.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Buffy demanded. Spike moved to get in front of her, but she pushed him out of the way. “Back off Spike, I’ll handle this.”

“Get down on the ground, and put your hands on your head.”

“Not bloody likely.” Spike growled.

“If this is a joke, your timing is the worst. I don’t have time for this crap right now.” Buffy said, and crossed her arms. “Graham?” She peered into the darkness.

“Get down on the ground and put your hands on your head. I’m not going to say it again.”

“Bloody right you’re not.” Spike pushed Buffy to the side and dove the other way. She rolled and sprung up, jumping the neighbour’s fence, and doubled back to where she assumed they were originally positioned. She heard Spike growl, attack, and scream in pain, but at least he was diverting their attention.

“Stop or I’ll shoot.” She heard one of the attackers demand, and Spike laughing in response. She crept up to the scene. There were four of them. One leaning against a tree, obviously injured either from the rock she threw or Spike’s attack. Another on the ground, and a tall thin man pointing a gun at Spike and a very large dark demon pointing some kind of staff gun at him. Deciding Spike could handle army guy number one, she tackled the big demon, pulling his staff weapon out of his hands and breaking it in half. Sparks lit up the neighbour’s back yard, and the other guy shot Spike, turned his back on the vampire and rushed over to help his friend.

Buffy pulled the big demon in front of her holding his hands behind his back. “Put the gun down, now.” She said and Spike screamed in pain as he dove at the man holding the gun. Pulling his hands behind his back, he held him with one hand, and clawed at the pain in his head with the other.

“Slayer, hurry up and kill these two, or my heads going to explode!”

“We’re not killing them, just tie him up.”

“With what? I don’t have a bleeding rope in my back pocket love.”

“You, over there with the egg growing on your head. Get up.” Buffy demanded.

“Take it easy.” The woman said standing in front of the injured man. “We aren’t going to hurt you.”

“So the guns and the threats are for?” Buffy asked.

“You attacked first!” The skinny old guy said.

“If you call throwing a rock at a stalker creeping around in the dark in my back yard attacking first, then yeah, fair point.” She rolled her eyes. “What do you want?”

Mrs Mallory turned on her kitchen light and Buffy saw her peering through the window. “We need to move this to another location.”

The woman nodded, and picked up her friend and the pieces of the staff weapon. The man groaned and Buffy and Spike marched them through the yards and back into hers. She tossed the demon down on the ground. “Move from that spot and I’ll kill you.” Spike handed her the tall man, and clutched his head. “Sit.” She commanded and they sat down. “Alright, let’s hear it. What does the government want now? Because I thought I made it pretty clear this is my town.”

The old man scoffed. “Your town?”

“That’s right, my town. Who sent you?”

“That’s classified.” He said and Spike lit a cigarette pacing in front of them menacingly.

“Ok, let’s make this harder than it has to be.” Buffy picked up one of the guns and pointed it at the group. “Get up.”

They didn’t move. “You heard the bird, get up.” Spike growled.

Buffy pointed the gun at their feet and took a shot. “Now.” They eased up and Buffy nodded at Spike and toward the back door. He pushed the leader in front of him cringing as the chip sent a wave of pain through his head, and Buffy had the gun pointed at the demon’s back. She marched them into the basement and tied them to support beams while Spike kept a gun trained on them. They searched the group for weapons, took away their radios and phones, and Buffy paced in front of them.

“Names?” She asked.

“Colonel Jack O’Neill, this is Dr Jackson, Major Samantha Carter and Murray.”

“Just Murray? That’s what you’re going with, like Snoopy?”

“Hey, it has its purposes.” Spike said and Buffy rolled her eyes.

“I thought I told you not to work with demons anymore.” She said.

“Demons?” Carter asked.

Buffy gestured impatiently toward Murray, and nodded.

“That’s what you’re going with?” Jack asked.

“Spike, watch them, I have to find Riley and figure out who these guys are.”

An hour later Riley was slowly making his way down the stairs, and Buffy relaxed some. “Thanks for coming.”

“No problem, what’s he doing here?” He asked glaring at Spike.

“Spike? He helped me capture them. They’re the ones that have been stalking me for the last two weeks. So what did you find out?” She asked moving away from the obvious elephant in the room onto commandos tied up in her basement.

“I can’t say for sure they are who they say they are, but the names you gave me correspond with real people stationed out of Colorado Springs. They work under a General Hammond on a project called the SGC which has something to do with deep space radar telemetry.”

“It’s a cover.” Riley said.

“Oh, so are they like the Initiative?”

“I don’t know.” Riley admitted. “But Colonel O’Neill, and Major Carter are Special Forces.”

“What about these two?” She pointed to Daniel and Murray.

“Dr Daniel Jackson is an archaeologist, and I can’t find any record of Murray.”

Just then the basement door opened, and Joyce cautiously walked halfway down the stairs. “Buffy, what’s going on?”

“It’s alright mom, I’m just interrogating the commando’s that have been stalking me all week. Get some rest, big day tomorrow.”

“Do you need anything?” She asked. “Should we feed them?”

“Mom, you have a big test tomorrow night, just get some rest, and if they get hungry I’ll order a pizza or something.” Spike shook his head, and Riley tried not to look embarrassed when Joyce came down stairs a moment later in her bath robe with a pitcher of water and a handful of plastic cups. She looked at the people critically and walking toward the prisoners she was going to give them a piece of her mind but Buffy stuck her arm out. “That’s far enough.”

Trusting her daughter, she nodded and stopped. “What are you doing stalking by daughter?” She asked and stared Jack down.

“Better answer right quick. Bird came after me with an axe once when I threated the slayer.”

Jack’s eye brows raised. “No shit?”

“Yeah mate, she’s as tough as her daughter.”

“As fun as memory lane is, can we get on with answering the question. Why were you following me?”

“We saw a tape of you fighting and-“

“Daniel!” Jack interrupted him. “Shut up.”

“Why? Let’s just get this over with so we can go home.”

“Yes, let’s.” Buffy said and looked at the archaeologist. “What tape?”

“The first video was some kind of training or testing video. You took on a bunch of marines, clobbered them too, and then the tapes get wild. There is one in particular where you are fighting some kind of humanoid, Terminator monster, and your eyes glowed.”

“There’s a tape of me fighting Adam?” Buffy looked at Riley.

He shrugged. “I didn’t know there was, but every room had several cameras. It’s possible.”

“Wait, so you don’t know what was happening? How did you get the tape and not get the file on the Initiative? The government knows exactly who I am. I even got a letter from the president, thanking me, so whoever gave you that tape wasn’t being very nice.” Buffy asked the captives.

“The president knows about your glowy eyes?”

“What is it with you and the glowy eyes? It was just a spell. It’s not like they glow all the time.” She crossed her arms, and glared at the Colonel.

“A spell?” Carter asked. “What do you mean, like magic?”

“Yeah, hocus pocus, conjoining or enjoining or something like Red Bull gives me wings kind of thing, so I could defeat the bad guy.”

“A spell?” Carter asked again, and Daniel shook his head.

“Look, what’s your plan here?” Buffy asked.

“What are your orders?” Riley clarified.

“My orders are to find out what exactly Miss Summers is, if she is a danger to us, what technology she’s using and how she did what she did on that tape.”

“Who gave you the tape?” Riley asked. “I was under the impression all evidence of the Initiative Project was erased.”

“That’s classified.” Jack said.

“Maybourne, Harold ‘Harry’ Maybourne.” Daniel said slowly and Buffy and Riley groaned.

Jack glared at Daniel and shook his head. “What part of classified don’t you understand?”

"I just want to go home Jack. This isn't our business." Daniel ground out.

“I thought that weasely bastard was killed in the fight?” Buffy said turning to Riley.

“That’s what I was told.” Riley said.

“Does this guy hate you or something?” Buffy asked.

“Why do you ask?” Sam asked.

“Because he knows very well how and why I do what I do. Sending you here was a sure fire way to tick me off, and get you captured.” Buffy put her hands on her hips, and glared at the captives. “I’m going upstairs to call someone. If you so much as try to escape, I’ll let Spike bite you.”

Spike went into game face and prowled, circling the tied up men and Carter while Riley tried to look stern and in control. Joyce simply followed her daughter upstairs, and waited by the phone while Buffy dialled the Pentagon. “Get me General Francis Maynard, code BTVS. I want to speak with him now.”

“One moment please.”

Buffy could hear Spike growling at Jack. “Cool it Spike.” She said.

“I’m just having a little fun love.” He said to the ceiling as the prisoners watched confused.

“Don’t call me that!” Buffy said, and Joyce looked at her funny. “It’s just Spike, mom, sorry.” She heard a scuffled in the basement and Riley punching Spike and she shook her head.

“You can hear him from the basement?”

“Miss Summers?”

“Frank, how’s Washington?”

“You tell me.” He said.

“Well, I just captured four people who’ve been following me for two weeks. Military guys. Someone gave them a tape of what happened before you shut down the programme, but didn’t explain who I am.”

“Who do you have?”

“O’Neill, Carter, an archaeologist, and some kind of demon they are calling Murray.”

“You’ve got SG1?”

“If that’s the four people I just said, then yeah, they’re tied up in my basement.”

Frank groaned.

“They blame Maybourne.”

He groaned again. “Let me talk to Jack, I’ll straighten this out.”

“It’s your call, but I don’t want them hanging around. There’s stuff going on right now, and I can’t worry about the military now, ok?”

“Don’t worry about it, just put him on.”

Buffy walked down stairs and pushed Spike against the wall effectively knocking Riley down in the process. “I thought I told you to stop.” Buffy said and glared at the two. Riley was looking murderous, and betrayal solidified on his face.

“He started it.” Spike insisted.

Buffy shook her head. “Out.” She pointed at Spike, and scowling he slunk up the stairs and banged out the back door. Sighing, she reached down and the rope that tied Jack’s hands to Carters. “You make one move and I’ll break your arm. Got it?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Good, you have a phone call.” She handed him the phone, and he put it to his ear.

“Colonel, it’s General Maynard.”

“Yes sir?”

“Get back to the SGC, I’ll call Hammond, and explain the situation, but this is out of your jurisdiction.”

“Sir, if this is some kind of NID experiment with the Goa’uld.”

“It’s not. This isn’t your turf, or your kind of monster. Get back to Colorado and leave Miss Summers alone.”

“But sir.”

“That’s an order Colonel.”

“Yes sir.”

“And if you see Maybourne again, shoot the bastard will you?”

“Is that an order sir?”

“Roger that.”

“Put Miss Summers back on.”

“Yes sir.” He handed Buffy the phone and she turned away from him, walking back toward the stairs. “Riley, keep an eye on him until I get back down.”

He nodded and crossed his arms standing in front of Jack, blocking his way out. “What’s really going on here?” He asked Riley.

“It’s classified sir.” Riley responded with some venom, before uncrossing his arms and sighing.

“What exactly was that Spike fellow?” Jack asked.

“He was categorized an HST or a Hostile Sub Terrestrial, and sub categorized under human blood drinker, or more commonly known as a vampire.”

Jack glared at the young soldier.

“Jack, there’s plenty of evidence of vampires all over the world. There’s even evidence in Egypt.” Daniel said.

“Don’t tell me you’re buying this?”

“Why not, we saw him transform, and Buffy threatened to let him bite us. What else could she mean?”

Riley smiled. “Believe it or not, it’s the truth. I’ve killed over fifty myself, and Buffy’s killed thousands.”

“That’s enough Riley.” Buffy said from the top of the stairs. “The General just wanted me to make sure they were on their way.” She came down the rest of the way, and untied the rest of SG1. “You heard the General, get going back to whatever hole you crawled out of and don’t come back.”

“Ok, we’re going.” Jack said and helped Daniel to his feet.

“Wait, one last question.” Buffy said. “What reason did Maybourne give you, or why did he think you’d be interested in me at all?”

“We are looking for new recruits. He said you had super skills and we saw the tape so we came to investigate. Uncle Sam needs you.”

“He knows better than that. Tell him next time you see him, if I ever see his face again, I’ll pull off each and every toe, finger, ear, and any other parts he has left, one member at a time, and dump the pieces down the tunnel leading into the underground bunker he was supposed to have sealed off and filled in. There are still things alive down there, eating the dead soldiers and demons and I’m sure they’d like something fresh.”

All five other occupants of the basement stared at her. Even Riley gulped some, though he tried to hide it, and Buffy had him lead the people upstairs, while she followed them up.

“Can we have our weapons back now?” Jack asked as they exited the back door.

Buffy broke his P-90 and handed it back to him. “Here you go.” She tossed the broken pieces of Murray’s staff weapon to him and dropped the bullets out of Daniel’s hand gun. The only gun she didn’t break was Carters. “A woman has to have a weapon in this town.” She tossed her a stake too. “If you encounter a vamp, the only thing that will kill it is a stake to the heart, decapitation, or lighting it on fire, but do not engage unless you have to. They are ten times stronger than an average human. Get to your car, get out of town, and don’t look back.”

Carter nodded and looked at the stake. “Thanks.”

“No problem. Keep these guys in line, and don’t forget to tell Maybourne what I said.” Carter nodded again, and looked to Jack who was looking at his broken weapon.

“How did you do that?”

Buffy shook her head. “Get gone.”

Jack closed his mouth and stood up straight. “Carter, get Daniel moving.” He marched toward the front of the house. “Murray, you have our six.”

Murray bowed his head to Buffy. “Be good.” She threatened, and he nodded following after his friends.

“You think they’ll be back?” Buffy asked.

“Not if you spoke to the General.” Riley said. “Unless they come through the front door.”

“Good.” She nodded and stepped in front of him. “You want to tell me what’s going on with you?”

He clenched his jaw and shook his head no.

“It’s classified, right? I’m so sick of this crap.” Buffy glared and walked into her house. “Call me when it’s unclassified.” She slammed the door and called Frank back.

“They’re gone.”

“Good. Did they tell you anything?”

“Just that there’s video of what happened with Adam, and they were trying to recruit, if you can believe it.”

Francis took a sip of whiskey. “You know that door is always open.”

“You know I can’t.”

“There may come a time when Uncle Sam needs you, yes even you, Buffy.”

“And if I’m still alive, I’ll do what I can, but for now, try not to send more people sneaking through my town. They’re lucky to be alive.”

“I can’t control everything.” He took another sip of whiskey. “What’s going on? You sound terrible.”

“It’s not something you can help me with.” She said sitting on a chair in her dining room.

“Why don’t you let me decide that?” General Maynard asked.

“Can you fix my mom’s health problems? She doesn’t even have insurance.” Buffy said. “Or tell me what’s wrong with Riley, because that would make my life a lot easier. Demons are one thing, but I can’t handle the rest of this right now and go to school, and worry about,” she stopped. “The other stuff.” She knew she couldn’t explain the Key to Frank, but the rest of it was innocent enough.

Francis Maynard paused and Buffy could hear him chew on an ice cube before he downed the rest of his drink. “Send her to the V.A. in Los Angeles. I’ll take care of the rest.”

“Yes. I can’t fix your other problems, but at least let me try to help your mother. Do you want me to send in a team to patrol while you’re gone?”

“No, my people can handle it.” She said feeling somewhat relieved. Sunnydale General was a decent hospital, but it wasn’t the best and not nearly as good as the V.A. in Los Angeles.

“Do you have a place to stay in L.A.?” He asked.

“Yeah, I think I do.” She smiled.

“Good, I’ll tell the University you’re on leave, and Buffy?”

“Call me if this other thing gets out of control.”

“I will.” She said and hung up the phone. She didn’t know what they could do about Glory, if anything, but if it got out of control, she would have to warn someone. She walked up to her mother’s room. “Mom?”

“Yeah honey?”

“Change of plans. We’re going to Los Angeles tomorrow to the V.A. Frank came through for us.”

“What happened?”

“I think they feel bad about the Initiative, and Frank’s a nice guy. I think he likes you.” Buffy said teasing. “You’ll have to see him after this is over with.”

Joyce blushed and snuggled under her covers. “I nice guy wouldn’t help me for a date.” She said.

“And that’s why he didn’t ask for one.” Buffy replied sitting on the bed. “What am I going to do about Riley?”

“Oh honey, you’re just going to have to suck it up and talk to him.”

“I tried, but he keeps shutting me out.”

Joyce hugged her daughter. “What did Francis say about the commandos when you called him back?”

“It was just a misunderstanding. He doesn’t want to warn the military away from us, because that will just bring them to town, but that means more soldiers might show up depending on how many copies of the video Maybourne hands out. Do you think they’d give me a copy? I bet Giles would like it for his Watcher diaries.”

“I don’t know, but are you sure they’re gone?”

“Frank ordered them back, and he’s a General, so they should be, right?”

“Good, I don’t know what I’d do without you Buffy.”

“You don’t ever have to worry about that mom, and the same goes for you.”

Jack slammed the door to his hotel. Whatever was going on, Hammond phoned, baffled by Francis Maynard’s orders from the president to clear out of Sunnydale. Jack tried to argue, but apparently it wasn’t an option.

“What happened out there Jack?”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. Hell I don’t believe what I saw.”

“Why don’t you let me decide?”

“Do you believe in Vampires, sir?”

“Excuse me?”

“Ask General Maynard what an HST is, and I’ll explain what happened when I get back, and look into someone named Riley who has some connection to the military, living with Miss Summers or connected with her somehow. I have a feeling we won’t be seeing Maybourne any time soon, but he is the key to all this.”

“Alright Jack, get back here.”

“Yes sir.”

He looked at his team and they stared at each other for a full minute before Sam began packing her bag, and the rest of the team followed suit. This was one of the more bizarre experiences of his life, and that was saying something for Jack O’Neill. He knew one thing for sure, Maybourne was a dead man.
