Right, I actually went and checked to be sure this time… Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and all associated characters belong to Fran and Kaz Kuzui. Even though this story sticks purely to the American programming, I still feel I should disclaim Toei Company because without their Bakuryū Sentai Abaranger
- or Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger
for that matter - we wouldn't have the Power Rangers franchise much less Power Rangers Dino Thunder
. Not mine, don't sue, et cetera.Summary:
Dawn spent her first three years of high school on the mouth of hell. Compared to that, Reefside is practically a vacation…Joe's Note:
Just another weird little idea I was toying with. Unlike the past, I've made absolutely no effort to make the Buffyverse and Power Rangers timelines play nice and then build from there; you'll have to just sorta roll with it and pick up the contextual clues as to how it all comes together.
"Make it stop. Sound so good, I just can't take no more. Turn it down, turn it up, I don't know… I don't know. But don't stop, don't move, just keep it there. Keep it right there… keep it right there…"
Nibbling on the end of her pencil, Dawn Summers looked from the calculus problem that she just couldn't quite manage to solve to where her girlfriend was singing up on stage and back before finally giving up and closing her book. There'd be plenty of time to solve it later, she decided, and much more interesting things to keep her attention in the present. Because while Kira's music was a bit too pop-ish for the tastes that Spike had helped nurture - which was kinda ironic given how punk the brunette looked - it was… well, her girlfriend. And she loved watching her girlfriend perform. "I wanna put you on repeat, play you everywhere I go, e-e-everywhere I go, play you everywhere I go. Put you on repeat, play you everywhere I go, e-e-everywhere I go, play you everywhere I go…"
While it pained her to admit it, Dawn was actually kinda glad that Buffy had sent her away in those last days before the fall of Sunnydale. Or rather she'd tried to. As soon as Dawn had woken up from her wonderful experience with being chloroformed, she'd promptly tasered Xander before dumping him off at a nearby church and stealing the car. She'd been tempted to turn around and head back to Buffy but… well, things between them had been strained enough due to Dawn's part in trying to evict Buffy. She had no desire to see how much further things would degrade if she stuck around. And so instead she'd taken the car, the supplies that Xander had packed, and a goodly portion of her wardrobe, and disappeared into the night. "Yeah! Wanna put this song on replay! I can listen to it all day! I can listen to you all day… hear you all day! Yeah! Wanna put this song on replay! We can start all over again and again, yeah! Wanna put this song on replay!"
Well, the car, supplies, some clothes, and a decent amount of money. Dawn shook her head as her fingers ghosted over the lid of her brand new laptop. Caught up as she'd been in her obsession with resurrecting Buffy, Willow had been totally unaware of Dawn systematically draining money from a half-dozen sources after her mother's death. It still amused her to no end to think that someone as smart as Willow could possibly think that they'd blown through her mother's life savings, the proceeds from the sale of the gallery, and Hank's guilt-induced oversized child support payment in a matter of months. She'd quietly used it to keep the house afloat during Buffy's Doublemeat Palace phase, but most of it had still been kicking around in her savings account when she arrived in Reefside. At which point she'd decided that… well, she'd damn well earned the right to spoil herself a bit. "Don't stop! Turn it on, turn it up, make it louder! I don't wanna miss a single thing, I wanna hear every melody, yeah. B-b-b-b-beating, beating so loud, you can feel it. B-b-b-b-beating, beating for you…"
New laptop - and smartphone and tablet - in tow, Dawn had started visiting the Cyberspace Cafe in hopes of finding more people with similar interests. The owner Hayley had turned out to be pretty cool, while Ethan had been… interesting if a bit too geeky for her tastes. She'd been quickly adopted by a group of girls interesting in roleplaying games, although that might have been due to the fact that she brought a complete set of Dungeons & Dragons
fourth edition books to the party. Time had flown by, friends had been made, and then a week before summer's end, Hayley had announced that she'd be restarting live entertainment when the new school year began. And Dawn had met Kira. "I wanna put you on repeat, play you everywhere I go, e-e-everywhere I go, play you everywhere I go. Put you on repeat, play you everywhere I go, e-e-everywhere I go, play you everywhere I go…"
Kira was… a bit like that girl Kit she'd met in her last year at Sunnydale High, a bit like Janice, a bit like Kennedy, and a lot like nobody Dawn had ever met before. She was a giant ball of contradictions, sass, and energy, wrapped in a yellow and black shell. It had been love at first sight, or at least mutual interest, with Dawn almost immediately proposing that she help Kira record her songs for release on the iTunes Music Store as a reason to spend time with the petite brunette. Kira had eagerly accepted, offering to take Dawn out to dinner to discuss the idea. They hadn't ended up talking much business at the restaurant… or at all when they'd gone back to Dawn's apartment afterward for 'coffee'. "Yeah! Wanna put this song on replay! I can listen to it all day! I can listen to you all day… hear you all day! Yeah! Wanna put this song on replay! We can start all over again and again, yeah! Wanna put this song on replay!"
They'd pretty much skipped the 'partners' phase to go straight to being girlfriends. Then they'd been given detention by Principal Randall for getting a bit too hot and heavy against Kira's locker, and now they were both. It was… ironic. Right? Dawn was terrible at knowing when to use that word, thanks for nothing, Alanis Morissette. Irony or not, the making out had led to detention which had in turn led to her and Kira discovering their Dino Gems and becoming Power Rangers. And now Dawn was back in the line of fire, but strangely happy about it. Except for when it interrupted her dates - and their aftermath - with Kira, being a Power Ranger was kinda fun and definitely fulfilling. Unlike Sunnydale, she wasn't a helpless spectator stuck in the line of fire. She was the powerful one, pun intended, fully capable of protecting both herself and others. "Feel it all, feel it all crashing down. I'm so lost… I'm so lost in your sound! Yeah, wanna put this song on replay… on replay. Lis-listen to you all day, to you all day!"
Speaking of which… the silver bracelet wrapped around Dawn's left wrist vibrated, the pink gem set in its center pulsing with a faint light. Time to get to work, evidently. Opening her laptop, Dawn took advantage of the username and password that one very grateful policeman had given her to tap into the city's CCTV network, flipping from camera to camera in search of trouble. And there it was. Some kind of flower… giraffe… lipstick monster accompanied by a mob of Tyrannodrones. God. What the hell was Mesogog on, and where could she get some? Because it had to be some really good shit for him to be coming up with things like this. "Yeah! Wanna put this song on replay! I can listen to it all day! I can listen to you all day… hear you all day! Yeah! Wanna put this song on replay! We can start all over again and again, yeah! Wanna put this song on replay!"
Closing her laptop, Dawn slipped it into her messenger bag along with her textbook and made her way over to drop it off with Hayley before slipping out the back door of the cafe. With a twist of her wrist, her bracelet transformed into her Dino Morpher and she spent the next minute or so examining it as she waited for Kira. Finally the door swung open again and Kira rushed out, her face flushed. "Sorry. End of song, swapping with Kylee to keep the set going, making a graceful exit… damn monsters have the worst timing." Nodding, Dawn continued to poke and prod at her morpher, eliciting an inquisitive noise from Kira. "What?"
"I still don't see why I have to be the Pink Ranger." Dawn scowled, flicking the pink faceplate of her morpher before looking up at an amused Kira. "Why couldn't there be a green gem? Or I could have been the Black Ranger. Or the Red Ranger; I'd so be a better leader than Conner."
Kira chuckled softly - she was quite insistent that she didn't giggle - before pinning Dawn against the wall, hands resting on the taller girl's hips as she leaned in. "No idea why there wasn't a green gem. There have been Green Rangers in the past, so it's not like it's impossible. As for how you ended up with the pink gem… well there are two reasons, really. One: you don't choose your Dino Gem. It chooses you."
"Says Doctor O, which I find very Harry Potter
of them. And the other?"
Grinning wickedly, Kira slid her hands down a bit further before reversing course, her fingertips rubbing against the outsides of Dawn's stocking-clad thighs as her hands disappeared up under the brunette's black skirt. Rubbing slow, lazy circles as she made her way upward, Kira suddenly changed tactics and slid her hands around to grab Dawn's ass, squeezing it as she pressed a kiss to the corner of her companion's mouth. "I'm pretty sure Conner wouldn't look nearly as hot in pink fishnets as you do." Winking, she released Dawn's ass and pulled away, turning and walking off down the alley as she summoned her own morpher.
Dawn stared at Kira's retreating back in disbelief before shoving off the wall and giving chase. "…oh, that's just not fair."
