"Ya know, Mel Gibson once said tha' every man dies, not every man really lives. I believe tha'."

"Do you?"

Doyle looked at the redhead next to him out of the corner of his eye. "I do."

"Are ya just humoring me?"

"Yer a cold one, Lily Potter."

"Just because I don't warm to your flirting..."

"I wasn't..."

"I'm married, Francis."

"Why can ya not call me Doyle like Sirius and James?"

"The same reason I call James Jamie sometimes. I know it irritates you."

"I fail ta see how YOU got in heaven. Yer evil."

She snorted.

"I meanit."

"I know you do. But you were saying... about men and living and dying?"

"It's just tha' some people hide, ya know. They don't DO anythin' worth while."

"So we're back to this again? Doyle, dear, how many years are you going to lament the fact that your premature, yet millions-saving, death prevented you from asking Cordelia out? You saved an entire race of peaceful demons from extinction. They got another chance through you, so how much longer are we going to hear you beat yourself up for losing the girl to the greater good? A girl who would likely have died if you had not done what you did."

"At least another decade."

Lily shook her head.

"Ya dint think too much o'James when he first approached, right?"

Lily snorted again. "Hated the guts part of him would be a more appropriate assessment. Wanted to crush his arrogant head under my boot heel wouldn't be far off either."

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph." Doyle muttered in shock. "How'd he land ya then?"

"Persistence... among other things."

"He... changed. He just quit being a prat."

"Oh? An' I'm sure ya had nothin' at'all ta do wit tha'?"

"I scolded him for picking on someone. I was so angry that he could do something like that to another person... even if it was a person who wasn't always his nicest to me. He didn't know it then, but I'd had a little lingering crush on him since we were thirteen. James was the best at almost anything he tried. I just couldn't understand why he didn't want to try his hand at being a decent human being. I wanted him to be better, so I could reconcile how I was starting to feel about him."

Doyle absorbed this.

"Then there was also that whole saving my life thing. Boy jumps into a pit where you're bound and gagged awaiting your demise for not being pure enough of blood, he's got you. I don't think I've ever been as happy to see anyone."

Doyle loved talking to Lily. She reminded him of Cordelia, but a bit more motherly and serene. He was about to ask more when James interrupted. Sirius and his little brother Regulus were behind Potter.

"Flirting with my wife again, Doyle?"

Lily rolled her eyes as Doyle sputtered a bit. He could take a joke as well as the next fellow, but it was a little true. He was about half in love with Lily Potter.

"Stop teasing him, James."

"You two better come and have a look at this."

"At what?"

Sirius, ever impatient, rolled his eyes and sighed loudly. "Will you just come on? She's asking about you."

Lily and Doyle exchanged a look. She?

They rose and hurried behind James, Sirius, and Regulus to the new arrivals area. The 'she' in question had her back to them and was talking animatedly to Jenny Calendar and Joyce Summers.

Doyle froze.

She turned then. It wasn't like he remembered. Her hair was shorter. Lighter. Curlier. There was a bit of age to her now. Not old, just wise. Like she had seen so much since they'd last parted. She was still beautiful though.

"Hey, Doyle. Well, I'm dead. Evil entity took over my body and did bad. It made me have the sex with Angel's son, and there was an evil pregnancy. When my body birthed the bitch, I went into a coma, and then I died. So the last year or so has sucked balls for me. How've you been?"

He blinked. "Cordelia."

"We've established that. Me Cordelia, you Doyle. I see you're still short and dressing badly."

"It's so good ta..." He trailed off and just moved to hug her.

She held back tightly. "Touch me? Yeah. Same."

Cordelia pulled back and flashed that thousand watt smile of hers.

"So come on, Doyle." She playfully punched him in the arm. "Don't be shy. How've you been?"

Lily cleared her throat and nudged him in the back of the leg with her foot. Subtle.

"Why don't we... er, go an' get some coffee or somethin' an' I'll tell ya all about it."

"They have coffee here?"

"They have jus' about everythin' here... now."

"Is this like a date?"

Lily kicked him in the back of the knee. Doyle grunted in pain and nearly fell. Cordelia raised an eyebrow.

"It's not LIKE anythin'. It IS a date."

Cordelia sighed in relief. "I thought you'd never get around to asking me out."

Doyle held out his arm, and Cordelia slipped hers through it. Lily winked him as they walked off.

"So..." Sirius said as he moved to stand next to Lily. "That's THE Cordelia."

"Mmm hmm."

"She's a looker."

"Bury that thought, Padfoot. Remus has a better shot at seducing Severus Snape."

"Oh! Well, thank you for the nightmares THAT will give me!" Sirius snapped before stalking off.

Regulus did a 'thumbs up' at Lily before hurrying off, laughing after Sirius's disgusted mutterings. Joyce shook her head as she and Jenny followed, but the Summers lady was fighting off her smile. Lily's ability to disgust Sirius with a few choice scenarios, most involving Snape naked, always made Joyce giggle.

"What was that all about?" James asked her.

"Nothing important. Just tormenting Sirius."

"Angels don't do that, darling."

"Well, forgive me if my horns get in the way of my halo."

James chuckled.

The two of them leaned down a bit to watch Doyle walking with Cordelia.

"That's an interesting sight."

"It is."

James looked at her.

Lily was smiling widely. "Doyle's finally getting to have a bit of the 'every man'. Funny that he had to die to live. Look at them. It's as if they were never apart."

"That's funny for a lot of us." James murmured before his lips touched hers lightly.

They were interrupted by a loud crack of laughter from Cordelia at something Doyle had said.
