Where You Lead - 7

~ Initiative Holding Cell, Sunday, 8:30 pm~

Buffy could see white. Above her, around her, only white walls. Was this the part of the dream where the penguins set up a badminton game in the corner? She rolled her head slightly to the left. Hmm, no penguins; this must be a different dream.

“Buffy?” The voice was fuzzy, like it was coming through a layer of cotton balls.

“Mrph?” Buffy answered, rolling her head so that she was once again staring at the ceiling. She could feel tingles all over her body, like she had put a fork in a light socket or rolled around in static-y laundry for an hour.

“Thank god you’re okay. Wait, are you okay?” The voice sounded closer. Buffy knew her options were to stay still or roll her head towards the voice. Maybe if stayed still she could get to the penguin part of the dream. She couldn’t remember why, but she thought she liked the penguin dreams, especially when the penguins stayed penguins, and didn’t become flesh-eating demon birds. ‘Alright,’ she thought, ‘that settles it. No more watching Chicken Run before going on patrol.’

“Buffy?” Suddenly, the ceiling wasn’t white. It was brown, and had two dark eyes looking down on her. This wasn’t a fun dream, maybe she should try going back to sleep. Was it possible to sleep in dreams? She would have to ask Willow; Willow knew all that science-y stuff. “Mmm, Willow.” Buffy muttered. There was something she was supposed to remember about Willow. If only that buzzing in her head would go away.

“No, um, it’s Riley.” The voice answered, sounding even closer than before.

“Riley? Where am I?” Buffy’s eyelids fluttered as she hovered in that state between sleep and wakefulness.

“Quarantine.” Riley answered.

“Oh.” Buffy closed her eyes again.

“Yeah, I never thought I could get sent into this place.” Riley stood up and kicked at the solid white wall. He knew there were cameras in all the corners, and that one of these white panels was a door, but there was no way he was getting out of this room any time soon.

“Riley?”

“Yeah, Buffy?”

“Where are the penguins?”

~Initiative Conference Room 1, Sunday, 8:31 pm~

Forrest and Graham were the last to arrive in the packed conference room. “Alright, we’re all here. Let’s get this briefing started.” Walsh called out in a loud voice, silencing all the smaller conversations around her. “Alpha, Beta, and Delta teams, you’ve all been assigned to this search and rescue as your primary goal for the next forty eight hours. Alpha and Delta were able to contain two of the targets this evening, as well as an accomplice. Unfortunately, the H.S.T. that the targets were consorting with managed to escape. Evidence from the capture indicates that it is likely that both Summers and Rosenberg were frequent associates with area H.S.T.s, including Hostile 17. It may be that the Rosenberg target was not taken, but left on her free will. Either way, we need to find that target and get her to lead us to 17; therefore, your mission is to find Rosenberg. Any questions?”

“Ma’am, did Summers indicate where Hostile 17 could be? It would help in narrowing down locations.” The captain of the Beta unit spoke up. His unit had thoroughly scoured the town, or so he thought, earlier today, and he was not looking forward to organizing another search.

“Summers is not available for questions at this time.”

“But I thought you said she was captured.” One of the younger soldiers mumbled.

“Somebody used the big guns on a girl and an old man.” Forrest announced glaring at the head of Delta team.

“Yeah, well at least we captured them.” Delta captain replied.

“They barely had a pulse.” Forrest countered. Graham put a hand on his friend’s shoulder hoping to rein him in a bit.

“Hey, it was just one man and one girl, and how were we to know they weren’t H.S.T.s? Your call said two H.S.T.s.”

“I said potential.” Graham quietly bit out. “That does not authorize force against civilians.”

“Gentlemen.” Walsh cleared her throat, and the captains all looked up, slightly embarrassed. “I expect you to work together to get Rosenberg and Hostile 17. Summers is no longer your concern.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Song 3: Where You Lead – Carole King

Wanting you the way I do
I only want to be with you
And I would go to the ends of the earth
Cause, darling, to me that's what you're worth

Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead

If you're out on the road
Feeling lonely, and so cold
All you have to do is call my name
And I'll be there on the next train

Where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead

I always wanted a real home with flowers on the window sill
But if you want to live in New York City, honey, you know I will

I never thought I could get satisfaction from just one man
But if anyone can keep me happy, you're the one who can

And where you lead, I will follow
Anywhere that you tell me to
If you need, you need me to be with you
I will follow where you lead
