~~~ Epilogue ~~~
Back in the jungle heat, Dawn was surprisingly glad for her new haircut. Unexpected, maybe, but it was cooler. The Blackbird rose above them, an elegant shadow of silent engineering, and disappeared into a convenient cloud bank. The wind of its passage shook leaves and blossoms from the trees, sending rainbows of vocal birds fleeing into the air.
After a few moments, the sound of the plane diminished to near-nothing, fading below the natural sounds of the forest. Dawn shouldered her much-abused pack and nodded to her companion.
Logan chomped on an unlit cigar and squinted. “So this is home, then?”
“For the next few months, anyway. I’ve got more samples to collect for my dissertation, and a few more for the Council as well.” Dawn’s voice shook a bit, and she wondered if she’d done something colossally stupid in hijacking Logan down here. It had seemed sort of rational at the time, but alone, really alone, with him for the first time, she wondered exactly who spiked her oatmeal to make her think this was a good idea.
He looked around, face impassive as he sniffed the air. He didn’t seem particularly distressed, and she had to think he wouldn’t have come if he didn’t want to, Professorial edicts aside. There was that one kiss- okay, so it a was a toe-curling, belly-rumbling one- but that was hardly just cause to whisk the man into the jungle to have her wicked way with him.
Speaking of wicked way, Dawn watched as he removed the battered leather jacket, revealing a form-fitting white t-shirt underneath. The muscles in his back moved smoothly, like those of some great cat, and he made a bone-cracking stretch from nose to toe.
He looked at her fully for the first time, a spark in his blue eyes. “So, Dawn, what’s there to do here for fun?”
“Er, it’s sort of a ‘make your own fun’ kind of place.” She took a step down the path that would lead to her camp when an arm suddenly snaked around her stomach, pulling her flat against him.
He nuzzled the back of her neck, breathing deep, and she wondered what he smelled in her: woman, witch or Key? He growled lightly, a sound that didn’t belong in a human throat, and her body broke out in shivers.
“Well, that’s sounds like my kind of fun, darlin’.” He kissed the back of her neck, behind her ear, turning her head to kiss her jawbone. “What do you say we get to it?”
Dawn most enthusiastically agreed.
