Disclaimer: I do not own Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Anything in this that is not owned by Joss, came out of my head.
A four-lane straightaway with trees on either side led off into the distance. Walking along it was a young man wearing an eyepatch on one eye. His hands were sunk deep in his pockets.
Xander continued walking, not noticing his surroundings except peripherally. He had no idea how he’d gotten there. Last thing he remembered was walking out of the slayer HQ in Greece after yelling at Buffy yet again. It wasn’t like it was the end of the world coming. All it was about was improving things. He had a few ideas that would ease her stress for goodness sakes! But no, she had to have her way. So he said “Screw it!” and walked out. Not like it hadn’t happened before. But now, here he was. He noticed some type of turn off up ahead, and a diner of some sort. He sighed as he looked in his wallet. There was enough for a couple meals anyway. And it wasn’t as if he didn’t have more in his checking account. He turned off and went to the door. The sign said it was open.
As he walked in, he noticed with a slight detachment that the diner seemed old-fashioned.
A waitress walked out from the back. “Booth or counter?”
“Booth sounds good. Got any coffee?”
“Sure. Be right back.”
As he walked toward one of the booths, he noticed a shadowy corner where a couple of people were sitting. He shrugged and sat down. He looked out the window.
“Here you go. Want anything else?”
Xander smiled. “Coke, biggest cheeseburger you have, and some fries.”
“You got it.”
As he sat there, a shadow fell on him. When he looked up, he blinked in shock. “Jess?”
The young man grinned and sat down, then waved his hand. The other one joined him.
They both smiled. “We’ve been waiting for you. Took you long enough to get here.”
”You kind of forgot to look both ways.” Then Jesse reached over and removed the eyepatch. “Feels good to see out of both again doesn’t it?”
Xander blinked. “Am I asleep?”
“Not yet... this is sort of the in between time. We were sent here to tell you what’s up.”
Xander crossed his arms. “World ending again?”
“Nope. You’re just being given an option. Go back to life and spend two years trying to learn to talk again and how to walk while remembering this conversation... or go on to heaven. Personally, I think you deserve a little bit of being waited on hand and foot. The pain however will be annoying.”
Xander looked sad for a minute. “I missed you and Anya both.” Then he looked at her and opened his mouth.
“Not a word, Xander. I forgave you before I died. It was just awkward. About the only time I probably would have said no to orgasms.”
“So what will it be, Xander? One way or another we’ll be walking the road with you. Whether it be now, or when you come back here. Time won’t pass at all for us.”
Xander scratched his chin. “Bossing Buffy around would be good I guess.” Then he got a hopeful look on his face. “I really get to remember this?”
They both grinned. “Yep. Just don’t tell anyone. They’ll think you’re nuts.”
“Funny, I thought they already did.” Xander said grinning. “Too bad I have to pretend I don’t remember though... Willow misses the both of you. No offense Anya... but she misses Jess more.”
Anya shrugged. “Makes sense, he’d probably...”

Xander woke up with that in mind, while noticing that he was back with only one eye. And an annoying thing stuck down his throat and pain in various places. So much for the idea of a dream. Now he had to figure out how to get back to normal. Buffy, Willow and Dawn peered down on him with smiles and tears.
Yep, Buffy was going to be ticked at him before he was through running her ragged.
