May Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot

A/N: FFA pairing #293 (The Mayor/Albus Dumbledore).

"Lemon sherbet, Richard?"

"Don’t mind if I do, Headmaster. I just love how the sugar makes them look all nice and shiny."

"Please call me Albus. Well, only if I can call you Dick, of course."

"Go right ahead, all my friends do. Even those that aren’t friendly-like do."

Minerva covered a giggle with a well-timed cough. She was sure that they did.

"And who is this lovely lady?" he said, before kissing her hand.

"Mayor Richard Wilkins, this is Professor Minerva McGonnagal. Minny, I’d like to introduce you to Dick."

She made another choking sound, but covered it with a mumbled "Hairball." The men looked at her oddly, but didn’t say anything.

Dick broke the silence. "Now, what did you want to see me about today, Albus?"

"I was hoping that you and your… associates… might be able to help us with our little Voldemort situation."

"Well, golly, Alby. We’d love to. Moldy Voldy’s giving a bad name to all of us snakes everywhere. But only as long as we can take care of it in time for me to get home soon. I’ve got a Christmas tree lighting downtown that I can’t miss. And I still need to buy a gift for my little Miss Faith."

Minerva couldn’t help but think that it was nice to finally meet an evil overlord who had his priorities in order – decorate the tree, buy gifts, and then take over the world. If only Voldemort was so organized. The mental image of Voldemort strolling down Diagon Alley gift shopping for the members of the Order of the Phoenix almost made her choke again. Almost. She’d better excuse herself before she couldn’t control her laughing.

The men both stood as she left, and then Dick grabbed another lemon sherbet.

"They sure don’t make girls like that anymore. Makes me long for the old days. Do you remember that gal our seventh year? Now, what was her name again? Emmeline? We used to fight over her so much. I wonder how Emmy-girl’s doing now?"

"That would be Emily, and she was my fiancé at the time. She ended up marrying a Longbottom."

"Huh. Never would have guessed that she’d marry into a Gryffie family. Did you say if Minny’s single?" He reached for another lemon sherbet. "And wherever did you get these splendid lemon drops? I’m going to need the name of your supplier."

. . . . . . . . . .

"Well?" Minerva asked Albus when he strolled into the teachers’ lounge an hour later.

"Well what?"

"Is he going to help us?"

"Who, Dick?"

"You know perfectly well whom I’m referring to."

"I’ve decided he’s evil and therefore must be avoided."

"Albus, you knew he was evil before this. What happened in there?"

Deciding discretion was the better part of valor, he lied. "He insulted you, m’dear. Obviously evil. We don’t need to align ourselves with the force of evil to defeat Voldemort. We’ll just have to depend on Harry. He’s a good chap, I’m sure he’ll do splendidly." He’d never tell her that the deal was broken when Dick had stolen the very last lemon sherbet. That would be a secret that would go to his grave.

Minerva just groaned. They were doomed.
