Former Colonel Harry Maybourne knew what he was doing was risky. He was a very wanted man and over the past couple years, had done very well at laying low and staying out of prison, so now he had to wonder at his own sanity as he walked into the California State Correctional facility. He signed in using a fake name and waited in front of a glass partition in the visiting room.
The dark haired young woman looked him over like a piece of meat before she sat down across from him and picked up the phone handset. Maybourne did the same, “Well, well, well, I guess the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?”
“I don’t see you behind bars old man?” Faith responded.
Harry snorted softly, “Well you haven’t seen much of me period. So you missed my stint.”
“I thought you were this whole air force officer good guy crap?”
Harry looked around cautiously, “And I never thought my only daughter would become a convicted murderer. As I said, apples.”
She didn’t know why she should be surprised that her father might not have been the white knight her mother originally made him out to be. “So, why are you here then pops? Gone my whole childhood, just the occasional letter or child support check to mom. What’s the stitch? It’s not like I can help you out of anything from in here.” Faith questioned suspiciously.
“Lets just say I know what it’s like on your current side of the glass and I don’t want to see my girl there any longer than she has to be.”
The dark haired slayer raised her eyebrows and waited for him to continue.
“I pulled in a few big favors and you have a parole hearing coming up next month. But there will be some conditions to it. Hutch will fill you in when he stops by. “
Confused Faith looked at the older man, “Hutch? So what are you then Starsky?”
Harry just smiled and winked at her, “Now, I need to get going, don’t want to overstay my welcome here.” He began to hang up the phone.
“Hey! Wait a second!” Faith called to him before the phone reached its cradle, “Why the hell are you doing this?”
“Consider it a Christmas gift, for all the ones I’ve missed.”
She chuckled and looked up at him, “But it’s only July…”
“I guess the holiday’s coming early this year then, isn’t it?”
“Merry Christmas, Dad.”
