Embracing the haunted lies, and finding truth.
Note: Sorry for the delay, but I finally know where this is really going. My muse sought me out, hope you like.
-The girl closes her eyes, trying to fight off the pain. Suddenly the pain is gone, and the air is easier to breathe. She opens her eyes, and sees someone else in front of her. A women. A blonde women dressed in the same clothes as the man was. Only he was gone and this women now sat before her. The women grabbed the girls face in her hands.
"Having fun yet sweetie?"
The women laughs as the girl whimpers.
"I know I am."-
I came back to myself lying on the floor screaming. I could hardly breathe, but with every breath I took I screamed. I just couldn't stop. Arms grabbed me obviously trying to slow my frantic movements. I see Anita to my right holding me, her eyes are black and she's breathing quickly. I toss my head to my other side still screaming and I see Richard Zeeman. He's leaning against the wall for support. His eyes are yellow and he's also breathing very fast.
I suddenly stop screaming and thrashing around. I lay still, breathing shallow and deep. Anita pulls back from me, and none of us say anything. Finally, Anita broke the silence.
"What the Fuck was that?"
I roll my head to the side to look at her. I suddenly feel very tired, like I have no strength. Even thought I can't explain why.
"What do you mean?"
"Don't play coy with me dammit! I felt that power roll of off you in waves. It wasn't all you in there either."
I closed my eyes and sighed. Looks like fate is making me fess up anyway. Guess I can't keep things to myself anymore. With my eyes closed, I answered her.
"There's actually something I haven't been completely honest about. I had another dream right before you called me this afternoon. The person I kept seeing you trying to save. Well, it was me. You were trying to save me."
"Yeah, that's a good way of putting it."
I opened my eyes to see Anita sit back on her knees. She kept shaking her head, like she didn't want to believe it. Her hand inched to her gun, as if it comforted her in some way.
"What are you guys talking about? What do you mean you had a dream?"
I didn't really know how to answer that, so Anita did it for me.
"There isn't a whole lot of time to explain, but in the readers digest version. Dawn here, is a little bit clairvoyant."
"The last time I checked, psychic's didn't do a light show like she just did."
Richard came away from the wall, and stepped a little closer to Anita and I. A light show? What exactly happened when I was out? Only one way to find out.
"Ok, hold the phone. What happened that I'm missing? Because all this, is making the kind of sense that's not."
I looked between the two of them. When no one said anything, I stood up and stepped out from the middle.
"No one going to answer me? Fine, I'll say what I know. Everything was fine, then I walked into this room and it was like I was some place else. I saw things I don't really know how to describe, but it was like I was right there in the room. Not a room really, it was a warehouse I think. There was this man, and he was taunting a girl. The missing girl, I think. There were also, maybe a dozen or more, people in hoods in the room. The man, was hurting the girl. Except he wasn't even touching her. Then the man was gone, and there was a women in his place. But the really weird things is, I think the other women is the man. If that makes any sense."
I stopped and looked at my feet. Just trying to put together everything I really saw. The women I saw looked really familiar, I just couldn't place where I'd seen her before. I looked back up at Anita. She was now standing, and almost right next to me. I don't remember hearing her move. That's not of the good.
"Dawn, when you stepped into the room, you fell to the floor and looked like you were having a seizer."
Anita said this quietly, like she didn't want to spook me or something. So I just looked at her, and let her finish.
"Richard got to you before I did, and when he touched you, a light started to come out of your skin. That's when I reached you. You were still thrashing around, then your eyes opened. Something else's power filled the room, is wasn't you, this I know. Your eyes were completely white, nothing was there. The other power, was something I've never felt before. It was dead, but not like the dead I know. Richard and I shielded ourselves and through our power at you. Then it just stopped, and you were back."
Well, that's not what I guessed happened. This night was getting more and more interesting. And yet, I think I'm starting to get an idea.
"The power you felt, I think its our bad guy. I mean it has to be right? If I am the one in my vision, then maybe I'm connected to him or her somehow. Am I even making any sense?"
"Actually it does, yeah."
Anita nodded her head, looked down at her side. She reached down and pulled out her pager.
"Its Jean-Claude, I gotta call him back."
She stepped outside and left Richard and I alone in the room. Richard started to walk around and look at things. For some reason, I just couldn't stand the quiet right now. So I decided to fill the silence.
"I thought we were going to be using a shifter to scent the bad guys where abouts?"
He didn't even look at me, when he said this. He just kept looking around the room at pictures. I guess he didn't have to say the obvious, he was a werewolf. What better shifter, than the boss man.
"Decided to do the dirty work yourself huh?"
This made him stop, and turn to look at me.
"Anita and I thought it would be best if we didn't have a changed shifter prowling the streets."
"You don't have to shift to follow the scent."
I made it a statement, because I should have known that anyway. Of course he didn't have to shift, he explained his Ulfic-ness to me before. Richard just nodded his head to me, noticing that I finally caught on. Just then, Anita came back in the room. Richard and I turned to her.
"That was Jean-Claude on the phone. He said he felt the power that came from you, all the way across town. He wanted to know what was going on. He mentioned that if he felt it, then our bad guy must have too."
Richard snorted, and we looked at him. He looked guilty for a minute.
"Sorry. Not like Jean-Claude to give in to someone matching his power."
"Richard, we don't have time for this macho crap. Do you have a scent to follow, so
we can get the show on the road?"
"You know I do. Its so strong, you have to smell it as well."
Richard and Anita shared a looked, that I didn't understand. Then they just looked away from one another.
"Dawn, I took the liberty of calling a cab for you. If your what the bad guys want, then I don't want you coming with us."
"What, are you kidding me? I am definitely coming with you guys. You gotta understand, that I just can't stay behind."
"Dawn, no. If things get messy, I don't want you to be fodder."
"I won't be, honest. I mean how else are you going to find the place? I saw it, you
didn't. You need me. Admit it."
"I don't want her getting hurt, but just let the kid come."
Even thought it was nice to have Richard agree with me, he was really getting on my nerves again.
"I'm not a kid."
"Alright, fine. But if things get bad, I want you to get out of there."
"Great, lets do this."
All of us then walked out of the building and into Anita's land cruiser. Maybe I should have listened to her and just went home. Then again, when have I ever listened to anyone.
Half an hour later, found us on an old backroad somewhere on the other side of the city. Richard was sitting in the front passenger seat with the window rolled down. If the circumstance wasn't so bad, I'd have to mention that he looked like a dog with his head hanging out the window. Pun intended.
Every so often, Richard would tell Anita to turn, or to slow down somewhere. Then we'd just keep driving. Good thing we weren't walking, this would be taking longer otherwise.
"The scent is getting stronger, we're getting close."
I don't know what we were getting close to, there was nothing around us but trees. The sun had set about fifteen minutes ago, so everything was cloaked in the darkness. All the trees loomed over us, almost like they were closing in on us. That was just a ridiculous notion right?
All of a sudden, we drove out of the trees, and on either side of us were construction sites and buildings. All empty and long abandoned, apparently. Anita slowed down to a crawling pace. All of us looked around at the buildings.
"Getting close alright. Any of these look familiar, Dawn?"
Anita looked at me through the rearview mirror. I looked around at the buildings, and one of them did look a little familiar. Before I had a chance to say anything, Richard beat me to the punch.
"Stop the car Anita, the scent is stronger towards that warehouse."
The one he was talking about, didn't even look like there was anyone there. But, that's the idea right? No one, will bother anything, if it looks empty. The place was far back away from any of the others. I looked up towards the top, and something flickered in one of the windows. Before, it got bright enough to see anything better, it went away.
"This is the one, I know it. There's someone there."
I opened to backseat door and got out. I leaned against the side of the vehicle and waited for Anita and Richard to follow suit. There was no way I was going to walk in there alone. Richard got out and stood next to me. Even though I didn't take me eyes off the building, I could feel Richard looking at me.
"You alright? I can smell your fear."
I glanced at him and looked back at the warehouse quickly.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little scared, but fine."
Richard leaned towards me like he was going to say something else, then thought better of it. Anita came around the front of her car, and immeadiently started for the warehouse. Richard and I looked at one another, then followed behind her. Before we went far, Anita stopped before reaching the door. She raised her hand up, and looked like she was petting the air in front of the door.
"Do you guys feel that?"
I didn't really know what she was talking about, but Richard nodded in agreement. Anita continued where ever she was going with that question.
"This place is cloaked in an concealment spell. Except, its not really a spell. Its power. Its a vampire power. The bad guy is inside here, and he doesn't want anyone to know that."
Anita took in a deep breath, then pushed in the door. We all walked inside. The place was actually what I expected, empty. The room was huge and dark. There were some junk, like boxes and glass, littered on the floor. But nothing really, to make anyone think someone was here.
Richard came to stand in front of us. I noticed his eyes were not normal anymore, but yellow. Like a wolf. I guess we're definitely getting closer.
"Anita, the scent is all around in here."
"We're dealing with something different, more than usual. It smells like death, but not. More like power mixed with it."
"I can smell that too."
"Then you know its getting stronger towards the door, over there."
Richard pointed to his right. The room was so dark, I didn't really see a door anywhere. So I just took his word for it. Anita and Richard both start to walk in the direction he pointed in. With nervous cold chills running down my back, I follow behind them. Richard came to the door first and opened it wide. He stepped back, and Anita went in first. Guess he must know from experience that she's want to take
On the other side of the door, was a small landing. There was a set of stairs going up. Anita drew a gun, from her person, and started to going up. Richard, then I followed. We went up two flights, before we started to see a small flickering light. The higher we went up, the brighter it got. On the fourth floor, I'm guessing fourth, Anita came to a stop and gasped. Richard came up beside her, and stopped as well. The stairs stopped here, we were now in a large room.
Looking from around the two of them, I took in the room we just stepped into. On contrary to the state of the warehouse, this room was all redone, almost new. It was pretty big in size, as if someone knocked out a wall or two just to make it larger. The room was designed like a coin. On one side, it was done it red and black colors. There was a bed, dresser, a desk, and book shelves along the wall. On the other side of the room, the colors were different, they were all pastel light colors. The items we mostly the same, just more feminine. In the center of the room, there was a black throw rug, and two large sofa's circling the rug. On the rug was single candle, which was the only light source in the room. Even with just the candle, the room wasn't as dark as it should've been. Other than the furniture and candle, the room was empty of anyone. Which seemed wrong, there had to have been people here.
Richard started to sniff the air.
"I smell blood. We're not as alone as we think we are."
Anita pointed her gun around the room, using two hands.
"I can smell it too. We're being fooled by vampire tricks."
Just by saying it out loud, as if a spell was broken the room was suddenly filled with people. And not the good kind either. On the rug, between the couches, sat the man and young women from my vision. Surrounding the sofas, were the hooded figures. The man on the floor, was looking directly at us. Well, at me really. He was dressed in clothes, straight out of the musketeer days, just like in my vision. He had long curling brown hair, with hints of black in it. Almost if depending on the lighting, his hair could be black or brown. His eyes were not just one color but two. One moment they were a bright green, then when the light caught them, they changed to a deep red. He had a grin on his face, like he caught us on a joke or something.
Richard shoved me behind him, and started growling in the direction of the man.
Anita had her gun pointed at him.
"Don't you fucking move."
He didn't listen. Still looking at me from behind Richard, he slowly stood up. Looking him straight in the eyes, I felt a pull towards him. I had this sudden urge to run to him. I had to fight like hell, not to. I knew he was a vampire, and I should not be looking him in the eyes, but I just couldn't look away.
I blinked suddenly, and I had a flash of being in a hospital waiting room with another man. This other man looked nervous and was shaking my arms. I could here him say she's coming. Then before I saw anymore, I was back in the warehouse.
Only seconds passed, we were all in the same position. At least I wasn't looking the vampire in the eyes anymore.
The man made a slight head movement, and suddenly the hooded figures rushed at Anita and Richard. Anita turned her gun towards them and started firing into the masses. Richard started fighting with the ones that weren't being shot at. He now had claws for hands, and were using them to cut the things up. Being shot at and sliced up, the hoods fell from the creatures. There was no other way to describe what they were. They looked like they had giant snake heads, more cobra than anything else.
With Anita and Richard fending off attacks on them, I was left standing all alone. I turned away from the fight, to look back at the man. But when I turned, he was already in front of me. I couldn't do anything but gasp in shock. I didn't notice him coming any further. Of course, I wouldn't, he is a vampire.
He is no longer smiling, he now has a very serious look on him face. I knew I should run away, but I was frozen in place. I just couldn't move. Slowly, I raise my eyes up to meet him. As I looked up to him, he raises his right hand and grazes my cheek lightly. Almost like a caress. Involuntarily, I let out a sigh. He raises his other hand up to my hair, and moves it slightly away from my shoulder. I can feel and hear my heart pounding, in the back of my mind I could vagly hear the fighting behind us.
Suddenly, the man yanks my head to the side and bares my throat. Before I can utter a sound, he bares his fangs and lunges towards my neck. As soon as his teeth went into my neck and sucked the first taste of my blood, in my mind it was as if time itself stopped. All I saw was nothing, I was nothing. The only thing I could hear was my heart pounding, and the only thing I could feel was the blood leaving my body. My body? That's right, I'm not just nothingness. With that thought I came back to myself, with a rush of light and colors in front of my eyes.
I was still in the vampires embrace, and he was holding me tighter. He was making these little part growling and moaning sounds. With each sound, his teeth dug in deeper. It was like he was a dog and I was his chew toy. I was holding onto his shoulders, but I started to feel a little weak. My grip was loosening and my hands started to slid away. I was so tired, and no longer felt any pain. In the distance, I could hear someone yelling my name. Whether it was Anita or Richard, I didn't know.
Instantly, the vampire pulled back and let me go. With nothing really to hold onto, I fall onto the floor on my side. Slowly, as if in a fog, I look up to him. He was breath heavily, even though vampires don't breathe. My blood was on him lips and sliding down his face. His eyes were closed, and he looked like he was in rapture. The skin on face begins to ripple suddenly, like water flowing beneath the skin.
Power began to emanate from him. It was so strong, that even I could feel its weight. It struck out inside the room, and everyone that wasn't already on the ground, fell to their knees. The air was hard to breath in. Along with the power, a bright light burst from the vampire. I had to close my eyes and turn my head away. It was so bright, that it actually hurt to look at it.
As if nothing even happened, the light went away. The air was easier to breathe in, and the power slowly lingered away. Still lying on my side, I raised my head back up and opened my eyes. The vampire guy was no longer standing in front of me. There now stood, a tall woman with curly blonde hair. I'd say she was kinda pretty, if I didn't have a rush of fear go through me. She looked so familiar to me right now that I wanted to scream. Looking at her face, I notice she's already looking at me. If I wasn't so tired I would have jumped, realizing her looking at me.
Her face breaks out into a full out grin, after looking me over. She then claps her hands together and jumps up and down excitedly.
"Hey precious. I've been looking all over for you!"
I close my eyes and start screaming. With my eyes still closed, I turned my head away. Because suddenly I had a rush of invading images, before my eyes.
I saw myself entering a familiar house, and walking towards a living room where sounds of an argument are coming form. At first look of the room, I see two blonde women. One woman, with curly hair, is sitting on a chair with the he back to me. The other blonde woman is standing and facing in my direction. The woman standing looks at me in alarm, and I don't really understand why she looked that way. I could hear and now make out what the blonde woman sitting was saying.
"...but to me you're a bug. You should get down on your knees and worship me!"
I start to walk closer into the room. The blonde woman standing widens her eyes, as if to signal me away. The woman sitting was still talking.
"But oh, no, you still think it's neat having Slayer strength."
I mouth the word "What", to the woman standing.
"Ooh, big deal! Stronger than humans"
I slowly start to back out of the room.
"Who isn't? I could crush the life from you, as easy as you could break a nail. But I need the key."
I almost started to reach the stairs that were in front of the door I came in, and I begin to turn away.
The blonde woman sitting suddenly turns to face me.
I stop inching to the stairs. The woman that's standing, looks alarmed.
"Come here for a sec."
The woman standing inches forward.
"Leave her out of this."
The woman sitting is still looking at me.
"Not asking twice."
I walk back into the room.
The woman that's standing, addresses the other woman.
"This is between you and me."
"No. This is between me and my key. You just happen to be the thing in the way."
The woman sitting, lifts her hands over her head and snaps her fingers. I then walk around in front of her view, and she folds her arms over her chest sullenly. And she looks me over.
"And you are just the darlin'-est thing I ever did see in my life. Whats your name, honey?"
"Dawn? Did you know your sister took my key, Dawnie? And she won't give it back! I bet you know where she out it, don't you?"
The blonde standing inched a little closer to me.
"She doesn't know anything"
I look at the woman standing, almost as if I'm annoyed.
"I know some stuff."
The blonde sitting, smiles.
"I bet she takes your stuff all the time without asking, doesn't she? Where's me key Dawn?"
The blonde standing addresses me suddenly.
"Go upstairs, Dawn."
I look at her angrily.
"You're always talking about stuff I'm not supposed to hear."
The blonde that's sitting looks more and more interested, in what I'm saying.
"I'm gonna figure it out you know."
Suddenly, all I see is darkness and then I open my eyes. As if a bad dream remembered, I'm back inside the warehouse laying on the ground. I raise my eyes back up, too look at the woman before me. I then say the only thing I can think of, even if I really don't know how or why I even know it.
