“Hey girl, ready to find a house? I’ve talked to a couple of rental agencies in the area.” The dark haired young woman greeted Dawn from her perch on the hood of the car in front of the gate.
“Absolutely. Who’s car?” The brunette shoved her duffel into the back seat, ready to make her stake in the world.
“Tiff’s. She’s cleaning all my weapons and carving like a million stakes.”
“Loose a bet?”
“Oh yeah, big time.”
The guard in the hut at the entrance gate was puzzled by the conversation, but ignored it as he was supposed to.
Stepping into the cluttered office filled with rocks and papers Jack announced his opinion of Daniels office to Dawn “This is where Danny keeps his rocks.”
“Artifacts Jack. Hi Dawn. What are you too up to?” Daniel had a miniature miner’s lamp on his forehead so he could study a small artifact easier.
“I’m showing her around the base. I figured we’ll say hi to Carter and T next. If you ever need to find Spacemonkey and he’s not in the infirmary he’ll be in here playing with his rocks.” Partially teasing and partially serious Jack imparted his wisdom to Dawn about the normal habits of a ‘spacemonkey’.
“Dawn I’d better come with you so I can keep us from spreading too many lies about we scientists.” He stood up, set his light on the desk, and pushed Jack out of the doorway shutting the door behind him.
Teal’c was found in Carters lab helping to take apart something that was brought back by one of the science teams. “Carter can turn into a hermit and the only things that will drag here out of here are blue jell-o or the end of the world. Come on Carter, T lunch time.”
Jack led the group pointing out rooms along the way until a guard came ran up to Jack like a Jaffa was hot on his tail. “Colonel O’Neill there is a very determined Englishman at the front gate demanding to speak to a Dawn Summers. There is no sign of how he got here, and to be honest sir, he’s kinda scary.”
“He’s early I wasn’t expecting him until later tomorrow.” Dawn chucked enjoying the fear that the guard had for Giles.
”Whose early, kid?”
“Giles in full ripper mode. What’s the quickest way to the surface?”
“We’re coming too. I want to meet him. Dismissed Airman.”
“Giles” Emerging into the sunlight the middle aged man was easily visible, pacing the width of the road. Upon reaching a decent speaking distance Dawn yelled the man’s name. Daniel was amazed by the mumblings in Sumerian regarding headstrong, spontaneous, and aggravating daughters.
“Dawn. What are you thinking?”
“That it’s good to see you?” Stepping up for a hug, she avoided the question.
“Yes it’s good to see you, but the military? Have you forgotten Adam?”
“No, I haven’t. But this isn’t the initiative. They’re a good group of people. Giles you know I’ll never have a normal life. By working with these guys I’ll be able to get a life away from what I grew up with. I know I’ll never completely separate my self from that but I’ll take what I can get. And until you hit the council’s mother load of money everyone’s living off of ramen noodles. You know that income would be of the good.”
“Where will you be living here?”
“Jenn and I are renting a small house. According to her this is a fairly quiet town. She jokes that this could be a slayer’s retirement city. I’ll call Cleveland tonight with my address. These are the people I’ll be working with. Rupert Giles meet Colonel Jack O’Neill, Major Sam Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Teal’c. Xander, Willow, and Buffy threatened Jack and Daniel. Over the phone Buff threatened the General and the whole base. So what’s your threat?” Dawn spoke calmly and privately until she introduced Giles to her coworkers.
“First, are you bloody sure you want to do this?”
“Completely Giles. For the first time I feel like I have a purpose. I’m not the slayer’s sister, the key, or the only normal girl in a house of potentials.” Giles could plainly read the heartfelt passion in Dawn’s clear eyes.
“I’m proud of you Dawn. You’ve grown up into a strong woman. I care about you.”
“I know Giles.” Giles moved to stand between Dawn and SG-1.
“You four will be working with Dawn, correct? You had bloody well make sure that you keep her safe. We will painfully destroy you, just remember hurt her and you will beg us for death.” Giles held their attention until Jack pulled out his wallet and removed a business card, borrowed a pen from Carter to write something on the back of it, and finally handing the card to Giles.
“That is my address and phone numbers. If she does get hurt because of my negligence, I’ll let you do what you want. The last thing I want is for any of my family to get hurt and that includes Dawn.” Having said this Jack stepped away from Giles and Dawn.
“I left Andrew and Xander at the airport.”
“Oh boy, Xander’s probably ready to kill Andrew. You should go save Xander from a murder charge. And give Willow a break from teleporting when you get back. Bye Giles.” Dawn gave him a hug as he dialed a number on his cell phone.
“Willow bring me back, please. If you make me hitch hike all the way back I simply will not bring you any more supplies from England.”
The threat worked and Giles disappeared from Colorado. “How in the world do they do that? There is no sign of a technology being used. Can you do that?...” Carter was approaching a Willow worthy babble trying to figure out a scientific explanation for what her eyes were showing her.
“Rupert Giles, isn’t he the man who took over the research institute called The Council a few years ago?” Daniel voiced his question out loud enough for Dawn to hear.
“Yep. When the old council blew up Giles was basically all that was left. We’re still trying to get into all of their bank accounts. How did you hear about that?”
“Even though I’m an academic out cast I still have an ear to the gossip grapevine. That and a loss of that magnitude is devastating.”
“Hey, you’re tellin’ me. We’ve been flying near blind since then.”
“What was their research specialty? I never heard for sure.” Daniel got a council update from dawn as they strolled toward the mountain.
”Travers never researched anything. The ruthless, cold, heartless dictator.”
“If you two have finished can we go to lunch now? So you found a house to rent? What’s it like?” The house interrogation continued as they returned to the depths of the mountain.
