A/N: I had to fudge the timelines a little to make the story make sense. This starts at the end of episode "You're Welcome" of Angel, after Season 7 of Buffy and just before the start of term for Harry's 6th Year. I also changed the end of Season 7 of Buffy in that they defeated The First but without destroying Sunnydale, the Scoobies still live there, but that won't come up very often, the bulk of the story is set at Hogwarts.

Cordelia's Task.

Cordelia smiled as they defeated Lindsey deep in the bowels of Wolfram and Hart. It was almost over, she was almost free. She said goodbye to her friends then turned to Angel. This was going to be harder than she expected. Here was the man she loved, the vampire she helped and the friend who had been there for her for seven and a half years through apocalypse after apocalypse, demon after demon, vision and more normal life drama. She knew that if he were ever to be dusted, she may see him again but that may never come to pass and this was really her last goodbye with him.

She walked towards him and gave him a kiss, a vision and a lifetime of goodbyes. The kiss threatened to break her very heart. They were interrupted by the phone ringing and she knew this was it, her day was over and her bargain would end when he picked up that receiver, she would ascend to her reward, but to her utter shock she did not leave this plane of existence as planned, and it was not the hospital calling, it was Harmony snapping that she wanted to go home and there was a man claiming to have an appointment with Angel.

She was hit with a vision of a huge dark shape like a grotesque skull with a serpent issuing from its mouth like a grisly tongue. She heard screaming, saw flashes of light and smelt the unforgettable acrid stench of burning human flesh. She knew she was needed to stay for this and that she could not go to her reward until her job was done.

Harmony’s voice broke back through the fog of the vision.

“Ugh, I don’t know, he says his name is Dumbledore and that he has an appointment with you and Cordy. Can I go home now?”

“I don’t have any appointments, make one and tell him to come back then.”

“You do it.” her former friend snapped and hung up.

Angel sighed then walked to the doors of his office and saw a very old man dressed in what appeared to be a luridly purple robe with little stars on it and his secretary closing the doors of the elevator on her hasty way out.

“Ah, Angel I presume?” he asked with a little benign smile and Angel instantly placed him as English from his accent.

“Yes, I am afraid that I am very busy right now and cannot …” Angel began but the man spotted Cordelia and beamed at her.

“Miss Chase. Wonderful, I need to speak to you about the vision you will have just had.” He walked right past Angel into the office, pulled out a thin stick and literally drew himself a little squashy chintz armchair and settled himself down as they both stared at him.

“Who are you?” she asked a little confused.

“Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, amongst other things. I am here to offer you a scholarship at our establishment.”

“A scholarship? What does that have to do with my vision and the Powers not taking me off this plane?” she asked curiously as Angel watched the man very closely.

“Well, Miss Chase, we are currently fighting a war against the man who uses the symbol you will have seen in your vision as his token of death. He displays it over the houses and bodies of those he has murdered in pursuit of his zealous fight for ultimate power. We are currently losing this battle and we need all the power we can get lest the entire world be almost wiped out. You are very powerful and the Powers agreed to my request to ask you if you would help us out.”

“What do you mean wipe out the world? Is he trying to arrange an apocalypse?”

“In a way, yes. He believes anyone who is not of pureblooded descent of wizards are no better than vermin and he seeks to destroy them all and have wizards as the supreme race on the Earth, himself at its head.”

“I’m on board then.” She agreed, making a mental goodbye to Doyle who she had hoped to be reunited with already. “But I do have two more quick questions, why did you choose me? My time was due to be over, today was to be my last hurrah.”

“Wait a minute.” Angel cut in. “What do you mean?”

“Angel, I didn’t wake from that coma. I was supposed to have left this plane of existence when the phone rang. The Powers agreed to let me have one last day to put you back on your true path before my death.” She said this as softly as she could in an attempt to lessen the blow but he stepped backwards a step as if she had delivered him a deadly strike.

“Dead? But…they can’t do that to me or you!” he exclaimed. “How do they expect me to fight when they keep taking everything from me? Buffy, Darla, Connor and now you?” It hurt to see the man she loved in so much pain and she stood and walked towards him and placed a hand on his chest where his unbeating heart lay. She closed her eyes and began to glow a brilliant white, the light engulfed them both and she withdrew the pain of losing her from him.

“Angel, you have to fight on, my purpose here was fulfilled, I set you on your path. I cannot help you anymore, please accept this as my last gift to you.”

He looked into her eyes and simply held her gaze for a while before nodding his assent.

“Mr. Dumbledore, my other question to you was this, did you know I am half demon and will that cause any problems?”

“Yes, I did, Qu’varti demon and no, that is actually part of the reason I requested you. When you are ready, we need to stop off in Sunnydale to pick up two others who will be needed in this fight.”

“Sunnydale?” Cordelia asked, shocked.

“Yes, I believe you know them, Willow Rosenberg and Dawn Summers, they too will hopefully be joining you at Hogwarts.” He smiled at them both and left the room, closing the door behind him.

“Angel, I have to go. I’m needed.” She reached out a hand to his cheek and cupped it gently.

“I understand, you never did lose sight of the mission and I can only admire you all the more for it. I need to stay and finish the work here and you need to go on to other things.”

“Goodbye, my Champion.” She turned and walked out of the door to her new life before she broke down and she didn’t hear him whisper “I love you, Cordelia Chase.” As she left his life.
