No one was home besides Joyce, Sirius, and lurking somewhere in the house, Krecher. Authur Weasley was attacked by a snake with an odd kind of venom. Harry Potter dreamed it and notified the Order. Joyce wanted to see Mr. Weasley but didn’t want Sirius to be alone. Sirius enjoyed her company, but she was a bit boring.
As they were playing wizard chess, all her pieces refused to move because she was a muggle. After Sirius threatened to feed them to Buckbeak they cooperated. Joyce still lost, only because here pieces didn’t listen to orders.
Then they began to talk about their families.
“I hated my parents,” Sirius said with ease.
“All teenagers do,” Joyce chuckled.
“I would have been so happy if you were my mother. I would have been the luckiest kid alive.”
“Stop, there are a lot of parents like me.”
“Mine weren’t. They only cared about the family’s name and reputation. Not about the actual family.” Sirius covered his face with his hands and rubbed his temple. “I worry about Harry, Joyce.”
“Don’t we all.”
“He’s suffered so much. James must be so disappointed in me for not being able to take better care of him. I’m stuck here.”
“James would understand the situation. We all know you love Harry and would do anything for him.”
“I would die for him.”
Joyce looked into his eyes and knew it was true. Tears sprang in her own because her gut told her something horrible would happen.
Mad Eye and Joyce sat in the kitchen across from each other, eating cookies that Joyce baked the muggle way with Sirius. It was fun, although half of Sirius’s face ended up covered in dough.
“These are pretty good. They make you a bit thirsty though,” Moody took out his hip flask and began to drink. “I miss my other flask, but some scum had to put a potion in there and drink it. That’s why I bought another one,” he paused, “the only other thing I drink is your tea and coffee ‘cause I trust you.”
Joyce smiled. “I trust you too.”
They remained silent for a few moments.
“Harry hasn’t come out of his room yet.”
“That Potter kid is probably shaken up after that vision,” Moody replied.
“Should we try talking to him?”
“Nah, leave that to his friends. What can we possibly say?”
Joyce frowned and muttered something about ‘poor kid’.
Lter that evening Hermoine and Dawn came to the house.
“Mom, give me some room to breath,” the youngest Summers said as her mother was hugging her half to death.
“Sorry dear, I haven’t been away from you this long. Later you have to tell me everything. Go eat with your friends.”
“I’m not really hungry. Let’s talk now.”
They walked to Joyce’s bedroom and sat down next to each other.
“I kind of like Potions. Professor Snape is a jerk but I’m doing pretty well. Better than some of those with magic.”
“That’s my girl. What about friends? Or Harry?” she nudged her daughter and winked.
“Eww, Harry is with Cho. I would never do that. Anyways, I have too much schoolwork to think about guys…” Dawn lied. A mother could tell.
“Who is he?”
“Who’s the guy?”
“There is no-”
“Liar. C’mon, tell me.”
“George. Happy now?” Dawn said, defeated.
“Not until I interrogate him.”
The next day Buffy and the Scooby Gang came to spend Christmas with the Order.
When Sirius, Moody and Joyce greeted everyone Joyce almost fainted when she saw Buffy.
Her oldest daughter had several deep cuts on her face and a couple bruises on her arms.
“Mom, it’s okay. Slayers heal quickly, it’s a perk.”
“So this happened recently?” Joyce half shrieked.
Buffy looked around the entrance room for help.
Moody put a hand on Joyce’s shoulder. “She was on duty for the Order.”
“I was fighting a snake, probably the same one Weasley dealt with when he was-”
Willow coughed and pointed out the children, who were all standing in the doorway, ready to thank people for their gifts.
“Thanks for the Chocolate Frogs,” the Weasley kids, Harry and Hermoine all said to Joyce. She kept eye on the twins; not knowing which one was George.
“Thanks Mom, I really needed that robe. And it’s green too! But now everyone will think I’m in Slytherin, but so what!” Dawn chatted quickly and then went back to her friends to get ready to visit Mr. Weasley.
Buffy grabbed her mother’s hand and dragged her to the Christmas tree.
“Mom, I got you a present. It’s from Greece.”
“How? We never went to Greece,” Joyce was curious.
“I did. With Charlie on his day off. We went on his broom, it was fun, but a very long trip, because we were in Romania.”
“Both of my girls are falling for Weasleys,” Joyce sighed.
“Wow, so she got over her crush on Sirius…” Buffy whispered.
“What? I didn’t catch that.”
“Nothing. Here’s your gift. I didn’t have time to wrap it.” Buffy handed her mother a white bag.
Inside there was a clay face of Hestia, the Greek Mythology Goddess of Hearth.
“Thanks Buffy, I got you a present too,” Joyce went to the Christmas tree and took out a gift.
Buffy tore off the red wrapping paper and looked at her gift.
“’What If… You Lose Your Wand in Battle’. A book, Mom? I don’t even have a wand.” Buffy stared at the cover.
“Exactly. That’s for if you come across any Wizards. There are some good defenses.”
“Such as?” Buffy asked.
“Ducking,” Joyce offered.
“You are turning into Moody. He got me a sneakoscope.”
Joyce smiled lightly and said nothing.
“What is going on with the two of you?” Buffy asked, raising an eyebrow. “I’ve been hearing things.”
“I have no idea what you are talking about,” Joyce said, feeling like she was a teenager again, defending herself against her mom.
“Alastor put his hand on your shoulder and he didn’t take an eye off you when we came.”
“I though I was supposed to be the one asking questions. What about Charlie and you?” Joyce needed to change the subject.
Buffy blushed and looked down. “Mom, there’s something I need to tell you.”
