Giles used his handkerchief to protect his senses. With a pen, he flipped through the journal that had been buried with the fabric. His eyes were watering. “No demon, I believe.”

“You sure?” Dawn pleaded. “It needs slayed.”

“This is a journal of a woman, Alice, a member of the American Professional Baseball League during . . .”

Dawn cut him off. “Normally, I’d be all with the history, but Giles, the smell!”

Giles cleared his throat. “She thought it was bad luck to wash her socks during a winning season.”
