Ethan was still having trouble figuring out what had happened That Night. All he was sure of was that Randall had died, that it hadn't been supposed to go that way, and his group of friends had shattered. Something had gone horribly wrong, and their lives had been forever altered.

Lucius had vanished, something about a family matter that needed sorting out. Rupert had vanished into the depths of the university, essentially trying to burry his head in the sand, to block away everything that had happened. Tweed, stiff shirts, rings from studying all night... It was appalling.

Thank God for Cissa. She'd stayed with him, kept him company. They'd even shared kisses and tentative touches. She'd lead him down an interesting path of distraction, with teasing kisses and torturous touches. She'd shown him to places where the passions that she roused could be sated, place that taught him all sorts of fascinating erotic delights.

She was definitely showing him a more enjoyable side of life. Ethan didn't even have time to worry about what had happened with Randall, he was too busy trying to figure out how to replace the many talented women at the various brothels with Cissa... Lovely sly Cissa, with eyes like smoke and a lithesome grace that never failed to wrap him around her little finger... She was luring him farther and farther down the path of hedonism, the path of self indulgence.

Then Lucius Malfoy had come back, his family matter taken care off. Which put a definite crimp in Ethan's efforts to woo Cissa. Especially since Lucius seemed to have a better set up with everything - more money, more magic, more skill with the bloody magic, this sense of style that always made everyone around feel underdressed, and he just oozed confidence. Ethan was definitely jealous, and figured that with a small amount of effort, that jealousy could develop into a full blown hatred. Yeah, he could see himself hating Lucius Malfoy.

"Are you just loitering around looking at those insufferable boring old books?" Lucius' mocking tones filled the room, conveying his sneer without even requiring sight of his face.

Ethan looked up from the book of demons that he'd brought with him, something he was supposed to be studying for his training as a Watcher. "Did you have something more entertaining in mind?"

Lucius sauntered into the room, his dark clothing giving him a definite sinister appearance. "We have to be able to come up with something more interesting than looking at bad engravings of... what is that anyhow?"

"Says it's a Fennyskif demon. Not particularly lethal, but quite a trouble maker." Ethan's boredom was obvious.

Rolling his eyes, Lucius glared at Ethan. "And this is of interest to me why?"

"Got anyone that you don't like? We could hunt up one of these to relocate there - they create horrible a stench and eat small animals like pet cats and dogs." Part of Ethan protested the idea, but part of him was remembering all the horrible yapping little dogs that had annoyed him, all the arrogant cats that had made little old ladies think he had some problems. Besides, weren't there always more stray cats and dogs?

Lucius stopped, turning his eyes towards Ethan with a look of slow dawning glee. "That's brilliant. So these books are halfway useful after all..."

The morsel of praise was eagerly seized by Ethan, and he smiled at Lucius. "They tend to hide in dark places, like animal burrows. Not too difficult to find, and with a little magic, simple to capture. As soon as it's released, it should scurry into a suitable new accomodation, possibly under a porch or in a barn somewhere..."

Cissa didn't join them for their planned bit of mischief. She had a family event to attend, something about a sister having a birthday or baby or something. So, it would be just Ethan and Lucius out causing trouble. They could manage this on their own.

Little did Ethan know how much this small seeming thing, this decision to use his abilities to cause trouble, to play pranks and create mischief would affect his life. How drastically it would alter the direction of his future.

All Ethan knew was that finally, here was someone that seemed to approve of his actions. Someone that offered him encouragement. He made a promise to himself that very night, to become even better at creating chaos and mischief. To make Lucius proud of him in a way that his family never had been. To make something of himself.

Maybe then he could have a chance at Cissa.

end Fall of Rayne.
