Series: A new series of mini's based around the Ministry of Magic implementing a work experience programme for the sixth and seventh years.
Summary: Katie's fed up of being protected, so she becomes the protector.
Katie Bell continued to braid her hair as she looked around the training hall.
It really was spectacular.
She shook herself. Now was really the time to focus. Her first physical training session since starting the work experience programme with the Council. The Ministry had decided the due to the 'incident' and her subsequent time away from Hogwarts that she was unable to sit the NEWT's that she had been working so hard towards.
She had been kept back a year.
She was the only person in at least the last ten years of school history that had been held back. Besides Flint that was.
Of course that had only made her higher in his list of priorities and Harry had all but insisted that she be placed within the confines of the Council for her own protection.
She'd argued with him of course but ultimately he had won. He'd pulled the Captain rank on her.
So she was going to do it. She was going to stay with the Council and train. And Merlin help them she was going to be good at it.
She was going to learn to kick the collective arses of Flint, Malfoy, Voldemort or any other Slytherin creep that tried to manipulate her with hidden pendants, necklaces, brooches or any other piece of enchanted jewellery.
Merlin, she really hated that Ferret.
Her instructor entered the room causing Katie to sigh. Him. Again.
Someone had given him the impression that she was some kind of damsel in distress. Of course that was his thing so, being the knight wannabe that he was he had volunteered himself to her.
"Are you ready Katie Bell?"
"Just Katie, Groo."
"As you wish. Are you ready to attempt to battle me in a fake arena?"
"Ready. Hit me."
The tall man launched at her as she ducked fully aware that somewhere in the room there was a camera and staff monitoring her every move.
She flashed him a quick grin and dodged his next attack, tripping him as he flew past.
"You have great agility Katie."
"Thanks. I used to run a lot, with playing quidditch an' all."
She bounced on her feet and leapt towards him, fist swinging until she hit him squarely in the jaw.
"Oh Merlin. I'm so sorry." Her hands flying to her mouth.
"I am very well."
"But I hit you."
"Didn't you intend to?"
"Well, yes but.."
"Then you struck well, and hit your target with great precision."
"Thanks. Are you sure you're ok?"
"I shall bruise but, nothing that I have not experienced before. I spent a year and a half in a town which was known as a Hellmouth."
"Cleveland. I felt the mystical energy draw me there. I originally thought I could go back to Pylea but, it was not to be."
"How did you get here?"
"I came through a portal to be with my Princess. Winifred found the correct combination of words to allow the transportation here but, the text to go back has long since been lost."
"You need not be Katie. I fight for honour against many worse a creature than those I found in my homelands."
"But, don't you miss it."
"I was enslaved as a champion for many a year. I am happier fighting for the good of my new home and helping to train the other young warrior women."
"You are not a chosen warrior Katie."
She sighed slumping down onto one of the benches. "And don't I know it."
"It bothers you, that you have not been chosen to fight."
"Yes and No. They don't have a choice but, people have faith in them y'know. Instead I get 'Poor Katie, she was bewitched. We better protect her.' It just feels ..restricting."
"You do not wish to be protected?"
"Then you do not wish to have a protector."
She turned to look at the man. She smiled a small smile at him. "Sorry. You're nice an' all but..."
"You do not find me attractive."
Katie's jaw dropped. "Huh."
He sat down on the bench next to her. "I have witnessed and heard many a tale where the protector and his beautiful charge end up wed and live happily ever after. I wished to have that with my Princess. We did do the com-shuk after all but it was not meant to be."
She put a hand on his shoulder. "Sometimes it isn't Groo."
"I failed her."
"She suffered and perished after I had left her alone. It was my fault."
"You're going to have to run that past me again."
"I left her in the protection of her preferred champion and she ended up in peril. It was my fault."
"You mean like it was my fault that I got cursed."
He looked back at her horrified. "Katie Bell. It was not you're fault, you are not responsible for the wrong doings of another."
She smiled triumphantly back at him. "Exactly! Thank You. The same applies to you. How on earth are you meant to know about what was going to happen, unless you're psychic? You're not psychic are you? 'cause Trelawney kept freaking me out after I went back to Hogwarts."
"I am not."
Katie paused going back over the conversation. "Groo, what's the com-shuk?"
"Ah Katie Bell that would be .." He was cut off before he could continue by a large claxon going off and three demons charging towards them. "Run. I will dispatch of the foes."
Katie watched as he ripped a weapon off the wall and started towards the rapidly approaching group. She knew that either way she was going to have to pass them to get out of the room. She ran to the wall and grabbed an axe and rushed to his side.
"Katie. I do not wish you to get hurt. I do not wish to fail again."
She rolled her eyes then turned towards him long enough for him to be able to see the smirk that was spread across her face. "Then don't. I'm a Gryffindor, courage an' all is a pre-requisite. If I leave, then I'm all about the Slytherin self-preservation and believe me when I say that I really don't like Slytherins."
Groo didn't get a chance to argue as the demons attacked.
"What's going on?" Groo asked opening his eyes looking around him. The last thing he remembered was fighting in one of the training halls.
"You kinda got poisoned." Smiled Dawn sympathetically. "But it's all gone now but, you've got to stay in bed for the next couple of days due to the whole stomach wound issue."
"Shouldn't I have perished?"
"Probably would have if Kay wasn't there. She's quick."
He noticed the blonde bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet a big smile over her face. "I killed two of them."
"Not to mention one she killed was feeding off of you..."
"I cut off its head."
Dawn grinned at her, then turned back to Groo. "Then she froze you so the poison couldn't spread any further round your body. How cool is that? Anyway she's now all bouncy and stuff due to the slayage." She paused thinking for a moment. "Actually it's kinda lucky that she's not a slayer otherwise well, things happen."
"Like what?" Groo asked sitting himself up a confused look covering his features.
"Com-shuking." Grinned Katie.
"What?" Asked Dawn looking from Katie to Groo, her hands flying to cover her mouth as she noticed the blush covering the injured mans face. "Oh that. I'll have to pass that one off to Faith; she's always looking for new words to call it. We'll be leaving you now Groo."
Dawn grabbed Katie's arm and pulled her towards the door, stopping before she stepped out of the room. "Oh Groo. Don't take too long getting better. I have to get into the inflatable suit for Slayer training and it's the kind of fun I tend to have without actually having any. Right up there with being kidnapped."
He nodded in acknowledgement to the girls and gave them a small wave as they left him to rest.
"How's the stomach wound Groo?" Katie asked as she ducked the incoming staff and took another swipe with her own.
"It hurts considerably less Katie."
"Takes more than a demon to take down the mighty Groosalugg. Right."
She held out her staff as he moved round her causing him to trip and fall to the floor. "Ooops." She smirked holding out her hand.
"You have become more proficient with this weapon."
She pulled him to his feet. "Yep. Dawn and I have been doing a bit of training on the side. I managed to take on Faith during her last visit."
"How did you fare?"
A sly smile spread over her face. "I kinda beat her. She went all quiet, then she gave me this."
She held out a small locket with the word 'Watcher' embossed into it.
"They wish you to become a Watcher. It is a great honour."
"They wish me to become a Watcher. I'm not sure though. I mean, would I be any good?"
"You do not need assurances from me Katie Bell. You have been chosen."
"By someone who is fondly known as psycho slayer. That fills me with real confidence."
Groo took the locket and moved behind her. "You protected me, your protector." He reached round her placing the locket around her neck and fastening it. "That would be your duty as a Watcher."
She gave a small smile then turned towards him. "You sure?"
Groo took her hand in his and brushed his lips across her knuckles. "Yes."
"Hey, you two stop making with the mushy stuff and get with the violence." Came a voice echoing around the room. "I'm meant to be writing a report for Faith 'bout you Kay and while she may appreciate..that.. kind of action I don't really want to be reporting on it."
Katie sniggered looking up at Groo and simply said. "I think Dawn appreciates violence most when it involves swords. Shall we?"
Groo looked at her, his blue eyes twinkling. "We shall."
