Disclaimer: Giles belongs to Joss. Molly
belongs to JKR. I just happen to think they would have
been sort of cute. I am making no profit.

            Sometimes
she wonders what happened to him.

            Especially
at this time of year, the end of summer, like the day so many years ago when he
handed her a letter, kissed her sweetly, and then apparated away never to be
heard from again.

            None of the
children know.  Not many people know in
general.  Most seem very happy to believe
that she and Arthur were one of those perfect couples that met in Hogwarts and
never dated anyone else.

            At that
idea, she smirks at her reflection in the kitchen window.  It’s an expression that would look out of
place were there anyone there to see it.

            But it’s
one he knew well.  Knew
it like he had known all of her.

            At 15,
she’d fallen for her Ancient Runes tutor. He was older, a 6th year
oddly academic quidditch player.  He’d
been gorgeous.  All the girls in
Gryffindor had crushes on him at one point or another.  Rupert Giles with his piercing eyes and
gorgeous singing voice and muscled physique was a fine specimen.  And she got to spend time with him alone each
week. The other girls envied her.

            At 16, he’d
kissed her in the library after a study session.  She’d given up on him as anything but a
friend by then, or thought she had.  After
that they’d been a couple.  Arthur had
been nothing more than her best friend at the time.

            The night
of Rupert’s last leaving feast they’d snuck out of the school and into one of
the lesser known gardens.  There she’d
given herself to him and he’d given her a promise ring.

            Three
months later in the orchard of her parents’ house he’d held her close and cried
before leaving.

            Abandoning
her, or at least that’s what it felt like.
Arthur had been there to pick up the pieces.  He’s a good man.  He’s stable, not going off to some muggle
university to be trained to fight vampires and who knew what else.  She’s happy.

            But
sometimes she still wonders.
