Feedback, It's the coin of the realm.
Xander was pissed as he walked back to Willy’s El Camino. Sure, he had dusted Spike and Dru, but Angelus got away. If he were intelligent instead of impulsive, Angelus would believe in self preservation and get the hell out of Sunnydale. But since Angelus isn’t that smart, he’ll stick around. He’ll probably vow revenge for destroying Dru, his masterpiece, like all good villains do.
Since it was nearing eleven o’clock, Xander figured he’d better tell the gang about being Darkwatch. When Buffy finds out what that means, she’ll go ballistic. Willow will go catatonic. Giles will understand what being Darkwatch means. Even when Xander tells him he’s not a vampire as well. Xander considered driving the car back to Willy, but figured he’d do it in the morning.
As Xander was heading to Sunnydale High, a “conversation” was being held at the Courthouse of Judge Roy Bean. Whistler, Balance Demon and messenger of the Powers That Be, walked through the swinging door. And he was angry.
“Hey, Your Honor. Call off your attack dog. Angel is needed.”
“Fuck you, Demon. In this building, you have no authority. We know of the prophecy Wolfram & Hart needs him for. Granted it’s not until 5 years, but still. Also, any vampire you have souled, we will have killed. There are checks and balances. This should appeal to you. I think you need a refresher course on how things work up here.
Like the Schoolhouse Rock song the three ring circus. The Creator is executive. The beings you work for are legislative. Also, the Oracles that are supposed to guide the Charmed Ones are legislative. We’re judicial. The Executive runs the show. You make things work. We make sure things work. And if things don’t go as dictated to you by the Executive office, we get involved. And since there was a legal warrant out for the destruction of Angelus, or Angel should you give him his soul back, you have no choice in the matter.”
“Is there anything we can offer for you to call off Harris?”
“I’ll give you a choice. Right here, right now. Give that vampire his soul back, right now. And we get to destroy Tom Riddle.”
“The Potter kid isn’t ready yet to fight Riddle. Can we offer anything else?”
“Riddle for Angelus. That’s the deal. You have to decide. If you leave to talk to your superiors, this discussion is over. And they’re both dead. Well, in the case of Angelus, destroyed. Choose now.”
“I’m not supposed to choose. They tell me what to do and I do it. We can offer anything else. But we need Angelus to remain in existence.”
“Why do you have such a hard on for that asshole that killed all my officers? He was warned that as long as he was in possession of his soul, we‘d leave him alone. His feelings For Buffy Summers caused him to forget our warning.”
“They find it ironic that a vampire would willfully work for them for the side of the light. Granted he needed to be ensouled first. Then offer him his mortality which they will never intend on paying. He amuses my employers. Nothing more.”
“You keep him around for entertainment value? Watch TV. You still haven’t given this court a good enough reason for withdrawing the warrant.”
“I’m not supposed to. You’re supposed to just do what they tell you to do.”
“Those Pricks and Total Bastards really are full of themselves. They forgot the rules. A transcript of this meeting has been sent to the Creator. The Executive Office will take care of them. Long before they can implement any plans to stop Sheriff Harris from doing his job.”
Whistler was nervous for his bosses. At least he never let the secret spill that the Powers were responsible for Angelus and Darla knowing where the Darkwatch were partying the night they were destroyed. Or the fact the set loose the Polgarans the night Xander killed Jericho. If it were revealed to the Judicial Office that the Legislative Office was entirely responsible for the total loss of the Darkwatch, there would literally be hell to pay.
And Whistler never liked humid climates.
