Help Wanted

Joan Girardi was skimming the pages of her AP chem book and pretending to actually be working. She popped in a piece of gum and kept doodling in her notebook when a voice cleared itself.

“Yeah, how can I help you?” Her eyes didn’t leave the chemistry book.

“Well, Joan, you could help me by giving me that roll of tape,” A young woman with blond hair and big brown eyes smiled at her.

“You should read the book, Joan. Never know when you might get a pop quiz.” There was a twinkle in the woman’s eye that looked familiar. Joan should know, she’d seen it on over a half a dozen faces these past few months.

“Oh, God!”

“You want me to hang up fliers?” Joan sighed, eying the stack of neon yellow fliers. “What does that say? Why do these say help wanted? Why is my cell phone number on here?”

“Joan, take a helping hand. Your going to need it.”

Before she could protest, God made a hasty exit. It seemed like he, er, she was always doing that. Joan slumped down, more depressed than she wanted to be. Her phone decided then to ring, scaring the bejesus out of her. She glanced at the screen. Number Unknown flashed beneath the words Incoming Call.

“Hi, is this Joan?”

“I just read your flier, and I’m more than able to give a helping hand.”

“Who is this?”

“Oh, sorry. I must sound like a total spaz. I’m Dawn Summers. You’re still looking for someone to help out, right?”

“Yep, I guess I am.”
