First off, thanks to Demona for your constrictive review. Really appreciate it. I use spell check a lot, but it doesn’t catch everything apparently. *sighs* I need a beta...
On with the story then!
A loud crash woke Wash out of a sound sleep. He shot up, puller his gun out of its holster and had it trained on the intruder before he could blink or even completely wake up. Years of living on Serenity had done that to him. Looking carefully though yet unfocusing eyes, he saw it was the bald man he had seen when he had first come to this place. He was holding what looked like a box full of clothes and other things. He set it down on the floor and held up his hands. “Hey man. Don’t shoot, okay? Not here to kill you. Hell, I don’t even have a weapon on me.”
Eyeing him carefully, Wash eventually put his weapon to the side. “What are you doing here?” Then, a thought struck. “Did...did you find out how to get me home?”
“No, sorry. Wes is working on it though. Angel wanted me to bring this to you.” The man walked over to the side of the bed and held out his hand. “Gunn.”
“Wash. I’m thinkin’ you already know that though.”
“Yeah, I did.”
Wash swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood up. It felt strange feel soft carpet under his feet and not the hard metal floors of Serenity like he was used to. Walking over to the box, he began to search though it. The top of it was mainly clothes. These, he threw behind him so they landed on the bed while asking, “So, what’s all in here?”
“Clothes better fitted to this time period, I think Harmony took it upon herself to grab you some games and a deck of cards, Wes added in some books...”
Wash suddenly cut him off with an exclamation of, “Books? Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh! Are you serious? There are really books in here?”
“Yeah,” Gunn replied, a little taken aback by his actions. “If you don’t like them, I can give them back to Wes.”
“No, no, no, no, no. You don’t understand. I’ve... I’ve never owned a book before. On Serenity, they’re really rare. Only the richest people, and thereby the people in with the Alliance can afford them. They’re kind of rare on Serenity ‘cause of that.”
“What do you guys do to learn stuff then?”
“Trial by fire mostly,” he said. Looking over at his gun on his pillow, he added in softly, “Literally, most of the time.” Returning his concentration to the box, he carefully removed the books and set them on the chair of his desk. Pulling out a few more clothes, he eventually came across a small wooden box. Pulling it out and flipping the wooden lid, he became giddy with excitement. It was full of plastic dinosaur toys. Reaching in, he grabbed out a T-Rex and a Stegosaurs, which he promptly set on a prominent place on his desk. Pulling out the rest, he set them up all around his desk and then leaned back to get a better look at them, then smiled.
Gunn was near laughing himself at his actions. “Thought for sure Angel was joking when he said you wanted these things. Guess he wasn’t though.”
“I don’t joke ‘bout my dinos. I had them set up all ‘round the controls back on the boat.” Settling into a chair, he looked over at Gunn and asked, “So, what do you guys do for fun around here?”
“Well, Angel sleeps, spike annoys Angel so he can’t sleep, Wes reads his ancient books, Harmony seems intent on annoying us all to death, Illyria annoys Spike and when I even get a free moment to myself, I watch TV.”
“That like the cortex?”
“TV? I don’t really know. Never seen the cortex you’re always going on about. You can decide for yourself though. There’s one in that cabinet over there.” He pointed at the wood cabinet with his head.
Wash stood up and wandered over to it. Pulling open the oak doors, he revealed a large black box. Pressing a button, he jumped back as it suddenly turned on. Inching closer to it, he eventually said, “Yeah, this is a lot like it. Most likely its precursor. Kaylee’d kill to be able to figure out how this thing worked.”
“And not even having met her, why does this not surprise me?”
He shrugged. “No clue.” Shutting off the television, he looked over at Gunn and asked, “So, what does this place actually look like?”
“Want the grand tour? All three major places in the building?”
Wash laughed. “Sure. Why not. Just hold on a sec.” He made his way over to the bed, holstered his gun and then walked over to the door. “Let’s go.”
“Alright. To the major places on this floor.” Wash laughed a bit at his words. This guy reminded him of the better sides of Jayne mixed in with a bit of Mal for good measure. Not a bad combonation now that he actually though about it. Following him out into the hallway, Gunn led him though a series or halls until they reached two large white doors. “That’s the lab I there. Hasn’t been used much since Fred…” he trailed off, then shook his head slightly as if to clear away a bad memory. After that, he started to walk away again. It was obvious to Wash that he had cared about this ‘Fred’ person- whoever they were- and missed them. He’s probally feel the same way of Zoe died…Following him down the halls, they eventually came to a staircase. Pointing down at the floor below, Gunn said, “That would be the lobby. The door over there,” he pointed to a wood door in a large bank of windows, “in Angel’s office, and the last stop on this tour.” Wash smiled inwardly at his comment. Gunn seemed to have a bit of his humor too. The two walked down the stairs and towards Angel’s office. Gunn was about to open the door to it when Wash stopped him.
“Meeting,” he told him, hearing voices inside. Gunn nodded and the two were about to leave again when Angel’s voice came bursting through the walls.
“I’m sick and tired of this shit Spike! Make up your mind already! Either stop following us around like a lost puppy and get your own damn job or help us fight demons that are constantly trying to kill us!”Demons
, thought Wash. They…they can’t actually mean demon demons. Maybe it’s like a Reaver or something. Most likely not though…
He looked over at Gunn and asked, “Are these guys kwong-juh duh, crazy? Demons aren’t real.”
“Yes they are, and no, we’re not,” said Spike, stepping out of the office just in time to hear his comment.
