It was nearing night when he saw her. The child was obviously freezing, trying to gain the attention of people passing by. He knew it would snow soon. He could feel it in the air.

She looked homeless but clean, young and innocent. She didn’t belong out here.

As he walked closer, he could see what the girl was selling: sulphur matches. He had no need for such a thing but still felt in his pocket for a coin or two. He felt like being generous tonight. If all went well he would recite his love-poem to the beautiful Cecily.
