Willow was lost in her own little world. The crew of Serenity didn’t know how to deal with someone grieving as much as her. They had lost loved ones of course but not also the ability to travel home, except for River and Simon. If any of the others wanted to return to their place of birth they could.

River was pretty much her constant companion, someone who could understand some of the terrors and memories she was facing. Someone who could understand the nightmares which left her screaming in the night and reminded her a little of the home she had lost, had turned away.

Kaylee had barely been in to see her, and for that she was almost grateful. She didn’t want the girl to see her the way she was. To see the black streaks through her hair and the darkness of her eyes that her rage had given her.

Maybe she should have returned with Dawn, at least it would be safer for her new family but the Hellmouth was no place for a grieving witch to live.

“You’ll be found soon,” River whispered as she stroked her hair. “Sooner than you think.”
