She could feel the pain of everyone on board the ship and it was agony that screamed to her. They hid their feelings all too well in person but their internal agony called to her and added fuel to her emotions. It was all too much; she could barely keep herself together. They were pulling her apart without realising it.

“Shhh,” a voice whispered and she could feel her hair being stroked in the way Tara used to do it. “Don’t let your emotions get the better of you.”

She tried to do what they voice had told her but she could barely concentrate.

“Shhh. Focus on your breathing. Forget about everything, just focus on breathing in, breathing out.”

The voice was a life line for her. She focussed on what they were saying and slowly the pain began to fade away. It was if someone had flicked a switch and things weren’t as bad as she had felt. She looked up to see who it was who had been with her, and saw River smiling down at her.

“Your hair has faded, become red again not black.”

“Thank you River,” Willow replied surprised it was River sticking by her not Kaylee.

“Thought it safer, I can handle pain if needed,” River replied to her unspoken thought. “Kaylee would not be able to handle your pain and anger.”
