Two Cards Short of a Full Deck

She knows that they are just dreams. Living memories of long ago, looking for a home. The Jack of Hearts and his raven-haired Queen, moving across the world with pain and death following in their wake. Tender lovers wrapped in darkness.

The Queen can see her, when she looks at the stars. They speak to each other in riddles and symbols, hidden secrets and uncertain futures. Sometimes they make it into a competition.

Sometimes they sing. The Jack of Hearts doesn’t understand, but he stays with her anyway, listening to one half of a song.

They know he’ll love them forever.
