Buffy stood in the sunlit door way. The entire occupants of Wolfram and Hart, including Eve, Gunn, Fred, Wesley, Lorne and Angel stood staring.

Her cheeks were smeared with grime, dust and blood. Her golden hair was tangled and matted with more blood. Her clothing was shredding and filthy. Her silken skin was marred by innumerable, newly-blossoming bruises and stinging cuts. Her body was slow from the loss of the vital fluids dripping from the gaping hole in her side.

Her smile was radiant and true, and her eyes were clear and bright as Angel dragged her to him, kissing her recklessly, needfully. Her arm drifted up around his neck, as it used to in the beginning, and they kissed like they had then- freely, openly, passionately, ignorant of the consequences.

Wesley and Gunn contemplated it that night, late, the building echoing, the streets hushed. "How can they bear it? Man, if it were me, damn the world. I'd take her over it any day. Either that, or I'd kill myself for the pain."

Wesley gazed at him with steady, clear eyes, eyes which had seen and experienced enough pain to gain wisdom, and held a weary, hard-earned comprehension.

"They're heroes. It's because of them and their sacrifices we are all alive today."

He fell silent. Then, "It is worth it for a love such as theirs."

Angel swore roughly against her cheek, his stubble scratching her chin reassuringly, grounding her. "Never again. I'm never leaving you to fight the battle on your own. Never again."
