”Xander are you alone?”

Xander looked over at his friends sitting a few feet away from him and heads in the other direction.

“Just a moment,” he says and moves through the bedroom door which he shuts behind him.

“As alone as I can manage, safe. What’s up Giles?”

“You need to get to LA, Angel’s soul has been compromised.”

Xander winced at the volume in his voice and added in a calmer and quieter tone:

“Are you serious? This is like the fourth time this has happened.”

“Yes I’m serious and yes it is.”

“You realize that there might be no way for me to keep this one under wraps with him or his gang…” Xander pointed out while he started to gather the things he would need from a secret safe in the back of his closet and packing them into a non descript black suitcase.

“Yes, I’m quite aware Xander, but you know why I can’t go and Willow is not exactly up to something like that, not to mention the whole Buffy situation.”

“This is the last drop Giles. I don’t care about the gypsies or the powers that fucking be, I’m fixing things for real this time. No more soul curse. I only went along with it the last time because of the circumstances, but this is bloody well it. Angel will not suffer this shit any longer and I expect you to be 100% behind me on this.”

“Fine, Xander. Just get there. I have to go now; the ministry is waiting for another bloody mind numbing meeting.”

“All right. I’ll see you. I’m going for an impromptu business trip to LA then. Bye.”

“Yes, good bye.”

Xander put down the phone. Zipped up his suitcase and went outside into the living room.

“Sorry girls. That was the boss man. Gotta head over to LA, right now. I’ll be back in a couple of days, hopefully. But you know, you’ve got the keys. Just lock up when you leave and don’t throw any crazy parties while I’m gone.”

Buffy looked up from the movie with a frown.

“You’re going to LA, like right this minute. Why? And why you, can’t someone else go?”

Xander forced out a smile and shook his head.

“I’m responsibility guy nowadays Buffy, you know, the whole suit and stuff. Middle management don’t got a lot of power, we just have a lot of responsibilities. Well, anyway. I’ve gotta split. Take care you two.”

Willow jumped off of the couch and ran to give him a hug.

“Oh! I’m so proud of my Xander shaped friend, going all mr. big shot guy. You go get ‘em tiger!”

Xander and Buffy who’d risen as well looked at her slightly mystified and Willow blushed.

“Oookay, maybe that was a tad bit overdramatic. I just got this proud moment you know.”

“Uhuh, yeah, sure Wills.”

Buffy hugged him as well and smiled mischievously.

“Bye Xander, have a safe trip and bring us a present… I’m thinking Victoria’s Secrets.”

“Oh yes, please Xan. Pretty please?”

Xander laughed and headed for the door.

“We’ll see. Be good now. Bye.”

“Bye Xand.”

Outside of the flat Xander’s demeanour changed and his face became a grim mask. Fucking gypsies and there thrice damned vengeance trip. And he wasn’t even going to start about the Powers. He just had to get to the Hyperion as soon as possible and hope there hadn’t been too much damage done.

When he was on the road and not far from LA he phoned Giles.

“So, what’s the sitch?”

“Apparantly there was this demon that the group saved that wanted to leave them a gift in the form of their fondest fantasy coming true.”

“Say no more. Everyone still alive?”

“Yes, they’ve barricaded themselves in Cordelia’s apartment.”

“And Angel?”

“Last thing they knew he was at the Hyperion planning his rise to becoming the new master of Los Angeles.”

“How do they know that?”

“It’s what he told Lorne he would be doing while he rallied up all the vampire masters of LA prime.”

“Wonderful. So I’ve got some company to expect.”

“It would appear so. I’m afraid you may have to resort to some, unconventional methods in getting Angel in a position where it’s safe to change him without compromising his strength in front of the prime.”

Xander eyed the desert with great displeasure.

“Of course I will. Because things aren’t bad enough as they are with me coming out as a magician, I just have to do it in the more worldly respect as well.”

“I’m sorry Xander…”

“Yeah, yeah I know Giles.” Xander waved dismissively with his left hand in the air. “It’s not your fault. Good luck with everything on your end. I’ll talk to you when I get out of this mess, hopefully alive and in one piece.”

“Do be careful Xander. He may still love you, but he’s not exactly in his right frame of mind like this…”

“Way to state the obvious Giles. I’m just hoping he does still have feeling for me despite all or this will become tricky. And whoa, didn’t think I’d go there. My denial mechanism must be malfunctioning, cuz I’m getting all these feelings all of the sudden.” He slowed down the speed of the car of a bit and blinked back the mist in his eyes. “Fuck.”

“Xander, I’m…”

“Sorry, yeah I know. It’s the story of my life. Responsibility, I’m starting to get sick of this game Giles. Think I’ll try and snatch me up some happiness before I don’t even have the feeling left to be able to recognize it as it passes me by.”

“You’ll do what you feel you must, Xander. I cannot advise you on this matter; it would be hypocritical to say the least.”

“Yes it would. How is Ethan by the way?”

“He’s fine Xander. Just fine. Great even.”

Giles’ voice sounded happy and Xander had to smile at that.

“I’m glad, Giles. You deserve it. Listen I’m driving into town now, I’m gonna head for Cordelia’s place first so my cover is officially blown on this side. Just so you know. Have a good one, Giles. I’ll see you, when we meet again.”

“’Til we meet again Xander, but don’t get killed.”

“Yeah… Bye.”

“Good bye.”
