DISCLAIMER: I own nothing. I'm just rewriting an episode to an idea I had. The original script belongs to Mutant Enemy and Joss Whedon. As does BTVS, obviously.
SUMMARY: It’s been a boring summer in SunnyD for Willow and Xander. What would have happened if that vampire hadn't shown up in the beginning of "When She Was Bad"? And if Buffy had arrived upon the scene to witness a sweet moment?
(The first part is straight from the episode to set the scene.)
It’s a dark night as a boy and a girl walk along next to a cemetery wall, seemingly without a care in the world. The two are walking home after a long and boring summer day. The boy takes an occasional lick of his vanilla ice-cream cone.
The two are playing a game as they walk side by side on the roadside pavement.
“I, alright, okay, uh... 'In the few hours that we had together, we loved a lifetime's worth.'” Willow offers hopefully and with a little drama in her delivery.
“Terminator.” Xander answers in a bored tone.
“Good! Great.” She’s a little disappointed that he got it so quickly because she’s running out of ideas. But she accepts his answer with enthusiasm.
Xander thinks he has the perfect offering.
“Um, oh, okay, I got one.” He readies himself for his debut. “'It's a madhouse! A mad ---'“ He imitates dramatically. He is immediately interrupted.
“Planet of the Apes.” She says with certainty.
“Can I finish, please?” He grumbles indignantly.
“Oh! Sorry, go ahead.” She repents with a grin.
“'--- house!'” He gestures that she may now answer.
“Planet of the Apes.” She doesn’t miss a beat. “Okay, good. Me. Uh...” And now she stumbles.
“Well?” Xander prompts impatiently.
“I'm thinking.” She panics and blurts the first thing that comes to mind without thinking.
“'Use the Force, Luke.'” She winces.
“Do I even have to dignify that with a guess?” Xander exclaims with mock insult.
“I couldn't think of anything.” She complains weakly. “It's a dumb game anyway.” She pouts.
“Well, what else do you wanna do?” He shrugs. “We already played rock, paper, scissors. My hands cramped up.”
“Well, yes, if you're always scissors of course your tendons are gonna strain…” She starts off on one of her famous babbles.
Xander, used to his best friend’s rambles interrupts before she gets lost in it.
“Y'know, I just gotta say that this has been the most boring summer ever.” He stops to face her.
“Yeah, but on the plus side no monsters or stuff.” Willow reminds him as she steps over to the cemetery wall. She hops up to sit on it as he reclines lazily against it next to her.
“I'm just so restless!” He sounds so frustrated that it’s almost not surprising when he utters the one thing she thought he’d never say.
“I'm actually looking forward to school startin' up again.” He mutters.
“Yeah, and that wouldn't have anything to do with a certain girl we both know who is a Vampire Slayer?” She says hopelessly as she narrows her eyes.
“Please, I'm so over her.” She clings to a breath of hope that he might actually mean that. “Did she, uh, mention when she might be gettin' back? About which I do not care.” He coughs.
Willow shrugs uncertainly. “I haven't heard from her in a while. Those postcards in the beginning of summer were the last.” She frowns as she says this.
“Eh well, she's probably with her dad having a good time.” He doesn’t sound convincing.
“And you don't care?” She’s suspicious of course.
Xander: Well, honestly. I think I’ve given up. But a man always hopes…” He suddenly turns on her, full of fun.
“I got a movie for ya!” He mischievously taps her nose with the cold vanilla cone.
“Xander!” She exclaims with great surprise.
“You're Amish! You can't fight back... 'coz you're Amish! I mock you with my ice cream cone, Amish guy!” He gleefully continues their game.
“Witness.” She pouts. “My nose is cold.” She sulks.
“Let me get that for ya.” Surprisingly, he leans in as if to lick it off her nose.
She’s so shocked that she yelps his name and balks.
He stops and apologizes softly.
“I'm sorry, I can't help myself.” He looks down. “Your nose looks so tasty.” He retrieves a napkin from his pocket and reaches up to gently wipe the white blob off her nose.
He takes much longer than he needs to and looks into her eyes. They're caught in a moment as he brushes his hand against her cheek. After another moment he starts to move slowly towards her and she responds in kind and tilts her head to him.
Her heart is threatening to break out of her chest and dance a jig.
They stop just short of making contact and linger there a moment. It seems to take hours as they lean in towards each other, but it's really only a few seconds. Slowly, his lips brush against hers.
And then, Xander's kissing Willow. Softly and sweetly. And her heart dances that jig inside her ribcage.
It's over far too quickly in her opinion, as Willow stares at him with her innocent green eyes. And then, suddenly, he realizes what he's just done. He shakes his head as if waking from a daydream.
“ I-I I'm sorry. I shouldn't have…” He’s so worried that he has broken a forbidden barrier.
His needless words are cut off as Willow presses her lips gently against his. She effectively covers his mouth so that he can't apologize for a dream-come-true.
He responds slightly, still in shock. It lasts a little longer this time, but not by much, and this time they're both staring into each other’s eyes. Searching... and find what they're looking for. And then...
They simultaneously crush their lips together - just going with the feeling, and riding a wave of realization and passion.
Willow wraps her arms around Xander's neck, pulling him closer as he does the same at her waist. Their eyes close as the kiss deepens. They're completely lost now. Neither of them notices their surroundings. They’re floating on a sea of bliss.
Which is why they don't see their other best friend walking up to them, mouth open in surprise, eyebrow arched. And then she grins when she realizes that Xander and Willow don't know she's there. She lets them carry on for a few seconds before she decides they need to breathe.
“And here's me thinking you guys would miss me.” She mock pouts.
Willow and Xander's eyes fly open, lips still locked. They sheepishly disentangle themselves and Willow straightens her clothes with nervous fingers.
“Buffy!” She is still clearly shocked.
“Um... this isn't …” Xander begins lamely.
Buffy rolls her eyes at his stupidity. “Finish that sentence and I'll thump ya.”
“Um...” He frowns with confusion.
Willow and Xander don't know what to say... they're not sure themselves of what just transpired between them. Willow nervously plays with her hands.
Buffy grabs Willow in a greeting hug and the redhead dazedly hugs her back.
“So, when did this happen?” The Slayer gestures at the two of them. “And I better not be the last to know!”
“I-uh... well, just now, actually...” Buffy now notices their dazed expressions.
“Guess you’re the first then.” Xander adds with a confused shrug.
“Oh.” Buffy frowns. Then really gets it. “OH!” She backs away. “I'll let you guys talk then...” She turns to go. “I'll, uh, go patrol... And hit my head on a tree.”
She scampers off. “Sorry!” She calls.
“Hey Buff!” Xander yells suddenly.
“Yeah?” She stops.
“Welcome home.” He calls. She grins at him and nods in Willow’s direction. And then she’s gone, fading into the night.
His eyes widen, acknowledging her meaning. He turns to Willow and if at all possible, they widen some more. As do hers.
She's still fidgeting with her hands. He shakes his head slightly to release the daze that he’s in, then offers her a lop-sided half-smile.
He gently takes to her hands in his, stilling them. Willow looks up at him and smiles softly.
“Xander?” It’s barely a whisper.
AN: Just a little one-shot. But if you want i can continue it a little. But only if enough of you want me too. Please review? :)
