Summary: Buffy goes house hunting in Hogsmeade. Prompt #26 for tth100_2

“It’s said to be the most haunted house in Britain,” Bill informed her when they paused by the Shrieking Shack on their way into Hogsmeade.

“Really?” Buffy asked gazing at the building. It certainly looked the part. It was falling apart from what appeared to be years of neglect. The windows were boarded up. Well mostly. A few boards were hanging by rusty nails that looked as if one good breeze would dislodge them from their spots and the garden was dank and overgrown. She tried to imagine what it had looked like newly built and couldn’t picture it. It looked as if it had always been rather disreputable looking.

“It was actually the place Professor Lupin went to transform when he was a student at Hogwarts,” Bill explained. “There’s a tunnel that connects the house to the Whomping Willow.”

“That’s rather convenient,” Buffy mused.

“Dumbledore had it put in place so Lupin would have a safe place to stay during the full moon.”

“That was rather nice of him,” Buffy said, smiling at Bill before bringing her attention back to the house. Pros and cons were swiftly considered while Bill continued speaking, oblivious to her thoughts.

“Nobody ever uses it now though, but half the people in Hogsmeade will tell you they still hear screams coming from the place.” Bill gently touched her arm to grab her attention. “Come on, that building I told you about is down this way.” Bill stepped away from the house and started down the road again.

“That’s alright. I’ve already found what I needed,” Buffy said, causing Bill to stop in his tracks with a surprised look. He looked from Buffy to the Shrieking Shack with an incredulous look. “You don’t mean?”

“Sure I do,” Buffy said with a grin, pleased at having flustered him. “It will be the perfect spot to train the new Slayers once it’s fixed up.”

Bill looked dubiously at the “haunted” house.

“It will work,” Buffy said waving away his doubt. She was sure about this. Granted, it would take a lot of work but the new council had plenty of money to cover the cost. It was perfect, and it would be easy for her and the newly called Slayers to slip down here from Hogwarts once the new term started. With her new job as the Professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts she wanted someplace accessible yet out of the way for her to train the new Slayers. Besides, Dawn was ready to settle down, tired of traveling constantly to recruit new Watchers and Slayers. She’d be glad to move into the Shrieking Shack once it was ready and the location wasn’t a problem since Dawn could easily apparate from there to the Ministry of Magic where she worked behind the scenes with Percy for the Order. Faith would probably want to move in too now that things had ended with Robin. It would be nice to have them both close by when she was at Hogwarts this year.

The place’s reputation was just icing on the cake. It wasn’t likely they’d be bothered much if the residents of Hogsmeade were so scared of the place. The place had already kept one secret well. Now it would keep theirs. She couldn’t wait to get started. Plans and possibilities filled her mind. There was so much to do before the new term started. “Come on, let’s go see Dumbledore,” she said to her companion. “Maybe he knows who currently owns the property.”

Bill cast one last uncertain glance at the haunted house before following Buffy. When he had volunteered to help her find a place to buy, he had never expected her to settle on the Shrieking Shack. No wonder Dumbledore liked her so much. Most of her decisions made as much sense as the eccentric headmaster’s did, which wasn’t much. Life had certainly become more interesting since Buffy had joined the Order.
