American Girl in London
American Girl in London
4-Letter-Drabble-Challenge from FaithUnbreakable
Open some kind of text file and close your eyes. Type blindly four letters and one digit. The letters I got were BHEK and the number 9. So I have to use the B and H for the characters and the letters E and K as the subject. The drabble had to be 900 words since I got the number 9.
B - Buffy
H - Hermione
E - Eating
K - Kissing
Disclaimer: Characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer belong to Joss Whedon and those from Harry Potter belong to JK Rowlings. I’m using them without permission.
Buffy looked around the pub she had found after leaving Giles’ London apartment. She had wanted to escape from the bickering that had been in the apartment over the possibility of aliens. Xander and Andrew were getting on everyone’s nerves with their constant arguments. She knew that the two of them were just trying to come to terms with who the bigger pop culture geek was but it was getting beyond a joke.
She slid into a booth at the back of the pub and sighed. Even in London she was receiving strange looks. Looking down at her outfit she couldn’t work out why, it was gorgeous. She looked at those near by and almost grimaced. What were they wearing? No wonder they stared at her, she was the best dressed person in the pub!
“Do you mind if I join you?” a voice interrupted her thoughts. She looked up to see a girl her age with bushy hair, pulled back but barely tamed.
“Yeah sure,” Buffy responded thinking that the girl looked reasonable enough. At least she was dressed normally!
“Oh you’re an American,” the girl said with a bit of a surprise.
Buffy just nodded, she had heard that a lot in her short time in London. It was becoming a little annoying but nothing was as bad as Xander and Andrew.
“Buffy Summers,” she introduced herself.
“I’m Hermione Granger. Are you hungry? I just ordered some cake but if you want you can share it with me,” she offered. “Tom always gives me more than I can eat.”
Buffy nodded as she saw the massive slice of chocolate cake land on the table in front of them. Hermione motioned to the man she called Tom and he headed back to their table with two drinks. The two girls ate in silence until Buffy had a mouthful of the drink. It was better than anything she had before.
“Butterbeer,” Hermione smiled at her. “Best drink ever.”
“I can see why,” Buffy agreed.
“Can I ask you something that is going to sound extremely strange?” Hermione said after a moment. When Buffy nodded her consent, she continued. “You’re not a witch are you?”
Buffy laughed a little. The girl was right; it was strange for that to be asked of her. “Nope.”
Hermione looked a little perplexed at that response. “But… how did you get in here? I mean, The Leaky Cauldron is hidden from people who aren’t magical.”
“You weren’t kidding about the witch thing were you?” Buffy asked.
“Not at all,” Hermione replied still trying to piece it together. She thought over what Buffy had said and why the name seemed familiar to her. “Merlin! You’re Buffy Summers.”
“Yeah I said that already,” Buffy said confused.
“The Slayer. Oh my, I’ve read about you!” Hermione babbled. “That explains why you could see the pub. You’re not a witch, but a magical being!”
“How did you know about me being the Slayer?” Buffy asked. “What do you mean read about me?”
“You’re famous in the Wizarding world,” Hermione explained before telling her about the world she had ended up in. After a while, Hermione ended with, “Would you like to see Diagon Ally?”
Bemused, Buffy agreed and followed the excited girl towards the back of the pub. They walked out into a back ally and Buffy could feel something brushing her senses. There was a lot of magic coming from the brick wall in front of her. She reached out and ran her fingers over the wall. Hermione smiled and tapped at the wall with her wand and Buffy exclaimed in surprise when it opened.
Following Hermione, Buffy took in the sights around her. The other girl seemed to know a lot of people because no matter which shop they went into, someone had greeted her with a smile and a hello.
“Wow, you seem popular,” Buffy said with a grin after a little old lady had hugged her.
“My best friend Harry is seen as a saviour in this world, since I helped him defeat the evil wizard, people treat me with almost as much respect as they treat him. He can barely go out in public without a mob forming.”
“He sounds like he’s made you live an interesting life too then,” Buffy laughed as another young girl came towards them.
After a while the two girls had to head back out into what Buffy had learnt was called the “Muggle” world. Hermione walked her back towards Giles’ apartment. They chatted about the differences in their childhood since Hermione had wanted to know if everything she had read was correct and Buffy wanted to know about the evil wizard Hermione had mentioned.
Finally they reached Giles’ apartment and Buffy turned to face Hermione. “I had a great time, maybe we can meet up again some time?”
“I’d like that,” Hermione agreed and took the offered business card with Buffy’s contact details on it.
“Well, I should be going in,” Buffy said suddenly feeling nervous, like it was the end of a date. Without thinking about it, she leant over and kissed Hermione before rushing inside.
Hermione stood in front of the door with a goofy grin on her face. Taking one more look at the business card, she slipped it into her purse. She was definitely going to go out with her again.
