CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO – Ethan Plots and Sam and Buffy Bond

Magic Box – Outside

Ethan Rayne couldn’t believe his luck. He’d found exactly what he was looking for. But it wasn’t just one witch it was two. He felt like the giddy school boy he’d never been and the best part was he’d be able to walk right into the shop and no one would know who he was. Rack had helped him improve his glamour, not only did it make him look like the most average male in existence it also blocked any magical signature he might be giving. He was going to be able to walk right into the lion’s den and right out with at least one little lamb but hopefully two.

The shop was closed now. They people inside were obviously researching something, most likely him. He laughed again. ‘Oh this was going to be so much fun,’ he thought to himself as he headed back into the night.

Magic Box – Inside

Buffy slumped tiredly into a chair next to Sam. “You guys didn’t have much luck,” she inquired tiredly.

“Unfortunately, no and to make it worse I was stuck with possibly the two most annoying males on the planet for half the night. I honestly don’t know how you put up with them. I spent the better part of the night deflecting questions about you. The best part was when we were attacked by vamps because Xander and Riley had to shut up.”

Buffy burst into a fit of giggles that were only made worse by the sharp look Sam gave her. “Oh, Sam. I’m so sorry. I know I shouldn’t laugh. It probably wouldn’t be so funny if I weren’t so damn tired. But I would have gladly traded places with you. We had to go to every sleazy room by the hour motel in Sunnydale and my god were the people who ran them disgusting. I feel like I’ll never be clean and after what one of them said to me about Jack. Ugh! Then to top it off Jack wouldn’t even let me hit him. That was so mean.”

It was Sam’s turn to laugh at Buffy’s whining. “Poor thing! Next time we should team up. I’ll let you beat up the perverts. So the night was a total waste?”

“Nope, I was still able to get my violence on. I took Jack and Spike to a local demon bar and pumped the owner for information. He gave me everything I wanted and I didn’t even have to hit him. But that didn’t stop me though. I hit him anyway.”

“You still hit him,” Sam said wistfully, wishing she’d had the chance to punch the two idiots who’d driven her crazy all night.

“Yep, broke his nose. But, don’t worry he so deserved it. He specializes in lying to me. Hell, Willy probably wouldn’t know the truth if it came up and bit him on the ass. Tonight he was actually too cooperative. Huh, wonder what was up with that? Oh well, no sense worrying to much about it and now maybe he’ll think twice about lying to me.”

Buffy looked across the room where Jack and Spike sat glaring at Xander, Angel and Riley. She leaned over to Sam and whispered, “If looks could kill we’d have two piles of dust and three dead bodies.”

Sam sighed, “There is way to much testosterone on that side of the room. Lord, I bet if we threw you in the middle of them they’d all fight over you like a dog with a bone. God, when will men realize that this type of posturing doesn’t impress women?”

“You’re right. It certainly doesn’t impress me one bit,” Buffy said standing. “Unfortunately, I’m ready to go back to the hotel and Jack has the car keys. So it’s into the breach for me. Wish me luck.”

Sam sighed, she was ready to go back to the hotel too, “I’ll go with you. Maybe if I give them disproving looks we’ll get out of here faster.”
