CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Rack’s Lair – Later That Night

Ethan sneered at the oblivious youths laid out across the front room of Rack’s less than stellar accommodations. ‘What won’t I do for a bit of Chaos,’ he thought to himself as he picked his way through the recumbent forms waiting their turn to see the power broker. ‘God I can’t wait till I have what I need from this idiot and can find better accommodations.’

“Rack! Where the hell are you?” Ethan yelled as he passed through the outer room.

The lean form of the power broker appeared in the connecting doorway and stared at Ethan with a sneer flickering across his face. “You rang.”

“I bloody well did! I think I’ve found exactly what we need,” Ethan said pushing passed Rack and drawing the other man into the back room and closing the door.

“You never told me there was such delectable witches here in Sunnydale. I stopped outside the Magic Box tonight and you’ll never believe the power I felt from two of the women inside. I think they’ll do nicely for my little operation.”

A slow, wicked smile spread across Rack’s face. “Excellent, I think I have just the thing to bring them to us.”

“What?”

“Oh, just a little spell that will make them want to come to us rather than us having to risk ourselves in taking them. I’ll just need to gather a few things before we can begin the casting but by this time tomorrow night we’ll have the witches.”

Hotel – Jack’s Room – Next Morning

Jack woke to the sound of banging on his hotel room door.

“Oh, for crying out loud! I’m coming. Keep your shirt on,” Jack grumbled as he rolled out of bed carefully dislodging himself from the sleeping woman who was draped across his body.

He looked down at Buffy with a smile on his face. ‘Damn, idiot knocking on the door. I could think of a whole lot better things to be doing right now,’ he thought to himself as he pulled on his pants and went to answer the door.

Jack jerked open the door to see the concerned face of Dawn Summers.

“Jack, Buffy’s not in her room. She wouldn’t answer the door and when I used my key card to check on her the bed looked like it had been slept in but she wasn’t there,” she rambled.

“Woah! She’s fine. She’s in here asleep. Is something wrong?”

Dawn immediately relaxed. “No, nothing’s wrong. I just wanted to see if she wanted to come to breakfast with me, Willow and Bronwyn. Hey, why is she here?”

“She had a slayer dream and wanted to talk it out. It was late when we finished talking so she just stayed.”

“Really, so all you two did was talk and sleep,” Dawn replied with a knowing smirk.

Behind Jack a sleepy Buffy appeared wrapped in a sheet, “Who’s at the door?”

Dawn’s smile grew even broader, “Good morning! Just sleeping huh. I’m thinking not much sleeping went on with Buffy being all naked.”

Buffy flushed bright red at her sister’s comment. “Dawnie, shut up. What are you doing here this early?”

“Well I came to see if you wanted to eat breakfast with me, Willow and Bronwyn. You scared me when you weren’t in your room so I had to hunt you down. If I’d known you were with tall, dark and nearly naked I would have left you alone. I’m too young to know if my sister does the ‘wild thing.’” Dawn said with a huge smirk on her face. ‘Oh yeah! It’s super fun to tease Buffy,’ she thought to herself.

“Okay. Let me get dressed and I’ll meet you guys downstairs in a little bit,” Buffy said and then turned to Jack. “Do you want to join us?”

“Yeah sure you betcha!”

Dawn gave Jack and Buffy another huge smirk and left.

Jack closed the door and turned back to the small blonde woman behind him and pulled her into his arms.

“Mornin,” he said and leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her mouth.

“Ummm, morning to you to,” Buffy responded in a sleepy tone. “I’m sorry my sister came by so early. I could think of much better ways to spend the morning.”

“Well, we could be late to breakfast,” Jack said with a sly smile on his face as he ran his hands slowly up and down her back.

“As much as I’d like to fall back into bed we’d better go or Bronwyn will drag Dawn back up here and I don’t think either of us is ready to have the sex talk with my three year old daughter,” Buffy said with a small shudder.

Jack and Buffy reluctantly broke apart and began to dress.

Rack’s Lair – Early Evening

“Do you have everything,” the magic broker asked.

“Yes, and thanks so much for your assistance in obtaining the necessary items,” Ethan sneered.

“I don’t know what you expected me to do. I did give you the spell. But, I can’t show my face anywhere near them. I’m not exactly welcome after what I did to their friend Amy,” Rack said with an evil smirk on his face. “She was quite the delectable little witch. To bad I had to drain her dry.”

“To bad you didn’t realize her relationship to that little band of do-gooders. Then we might not be in this situation. We could have used her to bring us the two witches.”

Ethan began to lay out the elements of the smell he was about to perform. “It was bloody difficult to get personal items from the two women. Luckily for me this glamour is still holding up. Bloody brilliant on my part if I do say so myself.”

As Ethan spoke he’d drawn a large pentagram on the floor and alternated red and white candles in a circle around the symbol. In the center of the symbol he placed a shallow brass bowl and two wax poppets.

“Rack, when I step into the circle and begin the chant light the candles in a counter clockwise motion.”

Rack sneered at Ethan but took up position at the top of the circle while Ethan drew several items out of a leather pouch.

Ethan stepped into the circle and set cross-legged in front of the brass bowl clasping one poppet in his hand. Taking a piece of twine in his hand he carefully bound a lock of golden blonde hair to the doll and placed it in the bowl. Rack began to light the candles.

“Earth witch. White witch. I summon you to do my will,” Ethan chanted and then threw a small handful of dirt into the bowl onto the poppet.

He then took the other doll and bound a lock of red hair to it and placed it into the bowl.

“Fire witch. Red witch. I summon you to do my will,” he continued the chant and then threw a shimmery substance into the bowl causing a red flame to leap up.

“Witches Red and White. I summon you. I bend you to my will. Come to me. Come to me. Let nothing stand between you and doing my will,” Ethan chanted loudly and as Rack lit the final candle the flames flared to the ceiling and wave of light flashed out from the circle and into the early evening.

Ethan sat silently, waiting for several minutes and then his eyes met Rack’s as an evil smirk crossed his face. “Their coming.”
