CHAPTER FOUR – Can’t Take Earth Out of The Girl

Buffy caught the squealing little girl as she jumped into her arms and tossed her into the air causing the child to bust into a fit of giggles.

“Again, momma!” she laughed out. Buffy tossed her into the air one more time. As she caught her she brought her giggling child’s face close to hers and kissed each little cheek.

SG-1 watched the interaction between mother and daughter. The woman before them had gone from serious leader to playful mother in the blink of an eye.

Buffy turned laughing eyes to the four people following her. “Bronwyn, momma wants you to meet some visitors to our village.”

The child looked at the four strangers for the first time with wide green eyes full of curiosity. She leaned into her mother and in a loud whisper asked, “Dids dey come tru de Chappa?”

“Yes, sweetling they did.”

“But dey not de bad one’s?”

“No baby – their not bad,” Buffy said laughing at her daughter’s innocent questions. She then turned to SG-1.

“I’d like all of you to meet my daughter, Bronwyn.” Buffy then pointed to each member of the team and began to introduce them to her daughter.

“Baby this is Daniel.” The little girl reached a tiny hand toward the archeologist and when he didn't shake it she leaned back to her mother, “He’s rude ma – he didn’ shake my hand.”

“Sweety – I don’t think he realized you knew how. Daniel, Bronwyn likes to shake hands with all the new people she meets.”

Daniel with a sheepish look took the girl’s hand and gave it a gentle shake.

Next Buffy turned to Samantha Carter. “Bronwyn, this is Samantha.” Sam quickly took the offered hand and shook it.

“I like you, ‘Mantha – you pretty,” the little girl said pleased that the pretty lady had shaken her hand.

Sam responded with a genuine smile, “Well thank you and I like you to.”

At this the little girl gave her what could only be described as a thousand watt smile.

“And baby this is Jack.”

The little girl looked closely at Jack, who had a goofy grin on his face, as he’d watched Daniel and Sam interact with the little girl who was the spitting image of her mother.

“Why yous smilin’? I don’ see nothin’ funny.”

At this Jack laughed, shook the child’s hand and said, “And it’s a pleasure to meet you to young lady.”

Finally, Buffy turned to Teal’c. At the sight of the large man her little girl’s eyes grew wide.

“Momma, he’s big! An he’s got somethin’ shiny on his head!”

“Bronwyn!” Buffy exclaimed embarrassed at her child’s outburst. “Teal’c I’m so sorry.”

“Think nothing of it Chosen One. She is merely curious as is the nature of all children.”

“Bronwyn, shake Teal’c’s hand and welcome him to our home.”

The little girl solemnly stuck her hand out to shake the large man’s hand. He took it in his own large brown one and gave it a gentle shake.

At this the little girl gave him a wide smile and began to squirm in her mother’s arms. “Momma, put me down.”

Buffy lowered her to the ground and the child ran back into the house.

Buffy laughed, “And that was my little tornado. Please come inside and I’ll show you where you can sleep and then we will sit down to supper.”

Buffy led SG-1 inside. The main floor of the house was one large room dominated by a large fireplace. The home appeared cozy with a large trestle table at one end of the room and at the other several wooden chairs with large cushions in the seats.

At the fireplace busily checking the progress of several pots was an older woman with her long grey hair braided and wrapped around her head. She turned from her cooking and wiped her hands on her apron and waited to be introduced.

“Cerridwyn, I’d like you to meet the travelers who came through the Chappa’ai.” She then turned back to SG-1 and pointed to each in turn. “Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal’c. I’d like you to meet my mother-in-law Cerridwyn.”

The introductions were exchanged with a chorus of “pleased to meet you ma’am'” and “thank you for having us in your home”.

“I’m just going to show them to the spare rooms and then we’ll come back down for dinner. Where did Bronwyn run off to?”

Cerridwyn responded, “I sent the child off to bed. It’s past time. She’s already had her dinner.”

Buffy walked over to the older woman and kissed her on the cheek. “Thank you. I’ll check on her while I’m up there.”

Buffy then led SG-1 up the stairs to the second floor of the house. “I’m afraid we only have two spare rooms and one of them is quite small. Samantha you can have the small room and the three of you can share the large one. It has two beds but I’m afraid one of you will have to sleep on the floor.”

Jack interrupted, “No problem ma’am. We’re used to roughing it. Never know what we’ll find when we come through the gate.”

Buffy showed them to their rooms and excused herself to tuck Bronwyn in letting them know to meet her downstairs as soon as they’d settled their things.

Buffy’s Home – Downstairs

Buffy walked down the stairs to see SG-1 sitting at the table happily eating and talking with Cerridwyn. She approached the table and sat down only to have Cerridwyn place a plate full of food in front of her.

“This looks yummy! I didn’t get lunch today.”

Cerridwyn gave Buffy a scolding look. “Child, what have I told you about skipping meals. You need to eat.”

“I know. I know. I’ll try to do better.” At the sound of Buffy’s resigned tone it was obvious to the members of SG-1 that this was an old argument between the two women. “I don’t mean to forget and I had a good excuse today,” she said waiving her hand at their guests.

“There is no good excuse!” Cerridwyn exclaimed but with little real heat in her tone.

At this Jack cleared his throat about to ask a question when Daniel kicked him under the table.

“What the hell was that for?”

“Jack let the woman eat her dinner before you start the interrogation.”

Buffy looked between Jack and Daniel and sighed deeply. She still wasn’t sure if she wanted these people to know she was from Earth but she also knew they already suspected it.

She laughingly thought, ‘You can take the girl from Earth but you can’t take Earth out of the girl.’

“Daniel, I can talk and eat at the same time. Let him ask his questions.”

This surprised Jack. He’d thought Buffy would be more resistant to answering their questions. He thought carefully over their interactions with the woman in front of him. For the most part she’d seemed no different than the other members of the Council of Elders except for her youth but then she would say something that sounded like pure California girl.

Buffy looked at Jack in exasperation. “Jack just ask what you want to know. It causes fewer wrinkles.”

Jack cocked his head to the side and quirked his eyebrow at her. “So, just where on Earth are you from?”

Buffy surprised him again by throwing her head back and laughing until she had tears coming out of her eyes. “Oh you're good. Can’t get anything past you can I. Well, Colonel O’Neill I’m from a little town called Sunnydale, California that sits smack dab on top of the Hell Mouth.”
