I heard something jump into my tree. I opened my eyes in time to see a Hork-Bajir jump out of my tree into the next. It was Jara Hamee!
< Looking for me? > The Hork-Bajir turned around. When he saw me, she smiled; or what looked like a smile. If I didn't know he was harmless, I would have flown away in fright.
"Toby send Jara Hamee to find Tobias. Toby find humans." I looked at him sharply--or more sharply than usual since a hawk's glare is always sharp.
< Are they Controllers? >
"Toby just say to get Tobias."
< Don't worry, we'll be there. > When Jara left, I flew to where Ax was sleeping. < Hey, Ax-man! Toby wants us at the colony. I'll get the others then meet you there. > Then I left, certain that Ax had heard me. I did the same thing for everyone else as the sun began to rise. I woke Rachel last and flew with her to the mountains where the Hork-Bajir colony was hidden. We landed in a tree with everyone else. I looked out into the clearing and saw Toby arriving with a group of humans.
< Okay everyone, > Jake started. < First we demorph, then we do battlemorphs. If they're Yeerks we want to be prepared. Watch out for the girl in front: she has a crossbow. >
< Jake, we have a problem, > Cassie announced. < There are four people about a hundred yards to the right. They look military and they have weird guns. >
< Okay, change of plans. Ax and Tobias go behind them as yourselves and get their attention while the rest of us do battlemorphs. Then we'll back you up and we'll all go our to meet everyone in the open, > Jake amended. I fluttered onto Ax's shoulder as he finished demorphing.
< Why does everything we do have to involve morphing? > Marco whined. Ax started to quietly move behind the military group as Rachel said,
< Yeah, Jake. Let Marco go out as himself. If they're Yeerks maybe they'll get rid of him for us. > She was joking...I think.
< Put down your weapons, > Ax told the people crouched in the brush. They turned to face us.
"How about not?" a guy with graying hair said. He turned his "gun" onto Ax.
< His weapon does not resemble any Earth weapon I have seen, nor any Yeerk technology, > Ax told me as a voice from the clearing pronounced,
"Who's there? Come out where I can see you." It was the girl with the crossbow. The man turned to look at her. "Don't make me come in there after you," she continued. The man turned back to us, and by that time the others had joined us.
< I think you'd better go out there, > Jake said and tipped his head towards the clearing. The man, obviously the leader, looked at his companions and nodded. They stood up slowly and lowered their weapons but didn't put them away. We followed them into the clearing for the strangest talk of my life.
