Disclaimer: All things Lost remain in the possession of whoever owns them. Lucky people, owning Jack and Sawyer and Sayid like that.
Notes: I’m feeling like killing characters today. That’s all the warning I’m giving.
Not sure if anyone off of my LJ requested this one or not – but I don’t care today. I wanted to have a little fun.

She heard the rustling in the forest long before she ever saw movement. Heart hammering, Kate turned to look in the direction the noise was coming from, wiping a bead of sweat from the tip of her nose.

“Hello?” she called out, hoping to hear Jack’s or Sawyer’s voice, or anyone from their group, for that matter.

But no one answered and the noise kept getting closer. Kate swallowed hard, looking around. It had to be the smoke.

What had Charlie said about when Eko faced the smoke? That you just didn’t show fear and it would go away?

Standing up taller, Kate squared her shoulders. She could do that.

All she had to do was stand right here and not flinch, not show any fear, and then it would back off and she could go back to gathering fruit.

Or run all the way back to camp and into Sawyer’s… or Jack’s… comforting arms. Whichever seemed more comforting at the time.

“Just…stand still,” she told herself as the first movement showed itself in the dense forest. “Not afraid. No reason to be afraid.”

She continued her mantra as the seconds passed and the noises got ever closer.

She continued the mantra right up to the point that she realized it wasn’t the smoke coming toward her, in fact.

And in that brief moment before the Polar Bear crashed out of the forest and into her, claws ripping into her flesh, Kate knew true fear.
