I'm joining the military before college. It's the right thing to do, serve my country and defend freedom. I assured my Dad that we had learned, that Vietnam and the mistakes we'd made there wouldn't happen again. Besdies, I told him, it would pay for college and let me see parts of the world I had never seen. I don't know why he's worried, there's no power which can stand long against us, and few that would be foolish enough to try.

I just know I have to give something back. our country wouldn't be what it is today without the men who went to war for us and for the world and spent their blood and their lives, their bodies and sometimes their souls to keep me free. How could I not do the same? How could I honor them, at my parents' farm here in Huxley?

It felt right in some way I cannot describe when I took the oath of enlistment, to swear to defend my country against all of her enemies, to uphold the Constitution.

I leave for basic training in the morning.
